Members, everyone now wants to know what has happened
to NASA's space shuttle Columbia, which disintegrated
over southeastern Texas and western Louisiana just
this morning!!

Was this caused by a loose tile??? Was it caused by a
computer problem??? Was there a pilot error while the
shuttle was still under human control??? Did
something explode aboard the shuttle??? If you would
like to comment, please reply to this message!

Happiness!

Blanche, they said it came down over central Texas,
between Waco and the Louisana border. So it was off
course by the time it underwent final re-entry.
Anyway, it was probably a computer problem, since the
re-entry (descent) angle is all-important, and the
flight computer is responsible for obtaining and
maintaining the correct descent angle. There is a
backup computer, though, so something may have
happened that the backup computer was unable to
correct in time.

NASA reports that prior to losing contact with
Columbia's crew, rising temperatures in the hydraulics
and other key shuttle systems were detected! So Newsy
Cat, you may be right about their re-entry angle being
too steep!

Blanche, it's now being reported that tiles may have
been loose or missing on the left wing of the shuttle
and that this may have allowed superheated gases to
enter the spacecraft. This sort of problem has
occured in the past, but the shuttles affected were
always able to land safely. So you're original idea
could also have been correct (although if the re-entry
angle were too steep, some tiles could have become
ablated, allowing the same thing to occur).

Subject: Re: What happened at NASA???

Hello!
It appears that during the launch of the Columbia,
which in NASA's
oldest space shuttle, an area of the protective
insulation from the
external fuel tank flew off and hit the left wing of
the shuttle. On
reentry about 16 minutes before landing at the Kennedy
Space Center
at Cape Canaveral, there was a loss of temperature
sensors and also
tire pressure indicators in the left wing, possibly
due to this
damage. An astronomer in CA noted that he witnessed an
extra flame
shooting off from the shuttle, like some damaged tiles
were being
flung off during the super hot reentry over CA. They
didn't have the
robotic arm in the cargo bay like they usually have on
this flight
because they figured it wouldn't be needed, which they
could have
mounted cameras on the end and checked out the
exterior before
reentry, even though they didn't have the means of
repair though.

NASA funds were cut during the past administration, so
many of the
prelaunch safety redundancy checks had to be scrubbed.
Obviously they
will have to reinstate the funds needed again for
complete saftety
prelaunch checks like they used to do. After the Jan.
1986 Challenger
disaster (which I had seen land at Edwards AFB in CA
on a previous
flight), was due to an O-ring failure during extreme
cold conditions,
the shuttle fleet was put on hold for two years. We
currently have
two Astronauts and one Cosmonaut I believe right now
in the orbiting
international space station, and they have enough food
and provisions
to last until June of this year. A Russian spacecraft
can hopefully
be used later if the problem isn't solved in time to
bring the men in
the station back home to Terra Firma instead of using
another space
shuttle. Rumors are that the scientists and engineers
at the Groom
Lake facility (Area 51 that worked on the Skunk Works
A12/SR71 and
many other stealth aircraft) are currently designing
launch and
reentry space crafts that have a much more reliable
heat protective
underside than the current tile system the shuttles
are using, and
also don't require the use of the huge external fuel
tank and SRBs
(solid rocket boosters).

Space shuttles do not carry "black boxes" like the
commercial
airliners do, because all telemetry data are sent
instantly back to
the American NASA facilities, such as Mission Control
at the Johnson
Space Center in Houston. They are already
investigating in depth the
cause of the disaster from the data they already
possess, and will of
course closely examine the debris that is found to
further help in
their investigative efforts. Unfortunately the debris
was strewn out
across the states of Texan and Louisiana, some lost in
forest land,
and others embedded in roof tops as well. This
disaster was the first
mission in NASA history that have lost human lives in
landing, which
is about 42 years. Considering this, they have done
remarkable well.

But now they must find the exact cause of the
disaster, fix the
problem, and move on with the space program. And of
course reinstate
the extra funding needed for greater safety checks to
try to
eliminate something like this from ever happening
again.

I hope the information I provided here was helpful.

A NASA satellite has taken a picture of the Big Bang's ancient afterglow.
Scientists have analyzed the data and learned that the universe is 13.7
billon years old (plus or minus 1 percent)and that the first stars
appeared only 200 million years after the Big Bang. These results are a
milestone in cosmology, says the NASA director of astronomy and physics.
