Good evening, fellow deep sky-ers...

I finally got to attend the first star party with my new Celestron CGEM mount.
It was cloudy, then finally cleared up at around 10. I imaged until 1:00. One
of the images was ruined by clouds that didn't go away as quickly as I thought
they had. The other two, I feel, are spectacular. Both images were taken with
my Canon 60D and the Canon EF 300mm f/4.0L IS USM lens mounted directly to the
CGEM.

M42 (Great Nebula in Orion)
My favorite subject in the sky - too bad it's going to be taking a break up in
the northern hemisphere soon! Exposure was ISO 1600, f/4.0, 60 seconds. These
are stacks of 30 light frames and 5 dark frames. The first image is the
full-frame stack; the other is a 3X Drizzle stack of the NGC 1977 region to the
north of M42.
http://ap.scodavis.com/M42New.jpg
http://ap.scodavis.com/NGC1977.jpg

M81 & M82 (Two Galaxies in Ursa Major)
While doing a dry run from my backyard, I discovered this rather nice-looking
pair of galaxies while choosing Messier objects to photograph. Exposure was ISO
1600, f/4.0, 60 seconds. These are stacks of 40 light frames and 7 dark frames.
The first image is the full-frame stack; the other is a 3X Drizzle stack of M81
by itself. Also, I was surprised when looking at the final stack that I
captured two bonus galaxies. At the top of the frame, just left of center, is
NGC 3077; at lower-left of the image is NGC 2976.
http://ap.scodavis.com/M81-82New.jpg
http://ap.scodavis.com/M81Alone.jpg

Since these are my first images of the Celestron CGEM, I consider these two
beauties to be the official start of my astrophotography work. I want to thank
the author and programmer of Deep Sky Stacker (awesome free stacking program),
as well as all of the people in the Celestron CGEM group that offered their help
and guidance to make sure that I had what I needed to reach this point.

Questions and comments are welcome. Enjoy, thank you, and clear skies!

-Scott

Hi all,

Last friday night was good here, so I had a shot at the Leo Triplet M65, M66 and
NGC3628 (the galaxy Messier missed in his observatories).

Hi,

I second that, I moved away from PS a while back and used PixInsight as my
processing software.
It's worth the money many times.

Hi,

Sorry to create a fuss... just a newbie trying to work out how this all works.

In the url
http://deepskystacker.free.fr/english/faq.htm#saveresult
it mentions that Photoshop needs to use 32bit/rational.

Perhaps the faq on the main page should redirect to the wikispaces area but I
will leave it to the group.

I concur that a more general comment about changing to 16 bit makes more sense.

AFAIK, the next version of creativesuite6 (which includes photoshop) mentions
greater bit level support for TIFF files.

Regards,
David.

Yes, many versions of PS can open 32-bit files, but curves and many
other processing features only work on 16-bit images, so you have
to convert to 16-bit if you want to use those features.

Hi,
Comet stacking with star trails works fine.
I was attempting to execute the comet and stars stacking with "star freeze
effect" but it fails every time.
I installed DSS to different PC with Win 7 and it failed there too.
DSS starts out with the first image and then just crashes.
I removed the first image, but this did not help.
Comet stacking with star trails works fine.

I use VirtualBox + Win XP

Hi fellas
I’m new to DSS and have some problems.
I have 22 RAW images of orion that I took with a canon 550d and a 18-55mm lens
on a tripod.
I have tried to register and stack following the instructions and I get a
message box telling me it will only stack 1 of the 22 images.
What have I done wrong?

Fully agree. Feed DSS with unmodified RAW images directly from the
camera, take the time to take proper calibration frames (at least
darks, flats and bias frames, especially if using a DSLR) and DSS
will usually have no problem as this is the type of data that DSS was
originally designed to use.
Luc has made many additions so that DSS can be used with a wide range
of other types of camera, but if you have RAW data, it is always best
to use it and avoid any pre-processing by other software.

Hi to all,

i'm trying to stack 30 files (lights and flats) to a mosaic.
I'm using the beta 45.

Just before finishing the calculating and saving the result file i got an
unspecified error (only a warning sign w/o any title or text) and no file is
saved, but the Temp-folder is cleaned.
When i stack to standard or cutting mode(?) there are no errors.

I'm using the beta because i have a CANON 1100D which isn't supported in the
3.3.2.

Same error when i stack 16bit TIF or RAW CR2 files.

Anny suggestion or is it a bug?

Regards from germany
Christian, who likes the programm - good job!

Hi,

it sounds like DSS is running out of memory. It could be simply due to
the mosaic option together with the size of the images from your camera
(I don't know how big the sensor is).

Hi Sander,

thanks for the reply.

I have an AMD 4core with Win764bit and 16GByte or RAM.

Space on the system and working partition is enough (50GB).

Drizzling isn’t active.

I tried all different combinations of the stacking options (Medium/Maximum
etc.pp) and color options.

The Canon 1100D has a chip with 4727x2848 px.

hi Christian,

you certainly have enough resources but since DSS is a 32b app it can
only use a small slice of it. It appears that the mosaic you're trying
to create is too large. With PixInsight this won't be an issue. It can
use all of your memory for very large mosaics.

Hi Stephen,

Try to lower your threshold in the advanced tab of the "Register checked
pictures" option

http://deepskystacker.wikispaces.com/Why+aren%27t+my+images+stacking%3F

You can also add dark and bias frames to your stack.

http://deepskystacker.free.fr/english/theory.htm

Hope this helpes you a bit in the right direction.

Subject: [DeepSkyStacker] DSS problems

Hi all,

Hopefully someone in the group can help with this. I use a Nikon D3000
DSLR for my photography and shoot my lights and darks exclusively in jpeg
because I haven't mastered raw debayering yet and convert everything to Tiff
format before stacking in DSS. the problem is that the resulting stacks show no
evidence of dark subtraction occuring.
Is DSS capable of subtracting Tiff darks or does it only subtact darks in raw
format??

Larry H.

Larry;

You can not shoot in jpeg, convert them to TIFF and expect to "calibrate" the
images. The original images in jpeg are not linear data even after converting to
TIFF. If DSS will accept the raw images straight from your Nikon D3000 then that
is what you need to use, you will not need to do any debayering, DSS will
produce a final stacked image in TIFF format ready for post processing in your
choice of application.

That is a good summary Len. This topic comes up every once in a while so
I created a new wiki page for it. It includes a little of the reason why
we should use RAWs.

I have been having a strange issue in Deep Sky Stacker. On the preview screen,
everything is toned very red. The link below shows what I see:

http://ap.scodavis.com/redscreen.jpg

This issue does not affect stacking; images stack at their correct color. It
only affects this one preview screen.

Any ideas?

This looks like really bad light pollution to me...

When you open
the saved TIFF file does it also look like this before processing?

Sure thing.

This is an original Raw file from my camera. It is not light pollution. It
looks the same no matter what images I put into dss.

Hello, I have a question about the comet stacking. Im doing stacking the comet
and stars, so that both are stopped. It seems that no matter the settings, I
have a nice comet and stars but going up to the stars is the streak from there
motion. The comet and stars are nice and round, you can just see the direction
of motion. I can upload a picture if you want to see it. I have stacked other
comets in the past and not got this but was with a different scope and camera.
The setup before was the old starshoot 2 and 8inch SCT. This setup is 11inch SCT
and Canon XSi.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sam;

I have dealt with this many times, the problem is that there is not enough
movement between frames to keep the stars from stacking on top of each other and
not being eliminated by the Kappa Sigma method in the comet stack. What I
suggest is to split the stack into two groups in DSS placing EVERY OTHER FRAME
into the two groups. If that does not do it then try splitting the stack into
three groups.

Hi Scott,

I was able to download this file. The preview does look red but there
appears to be no bayer pattern so I think it's being converted correctly
by dcraw. My PaintShopPro can't open the file but Picassa shows a
histogram with a red peak to the right. PixInsight shows the same.

In other words, your image is red. DSS is showing it correctly. You
probably have a background calibration option enabled in DSS to get a
neutral background in the stack. Without it the resulting image would
probably be red as well.

I am new to DSS and am attempting to understand the final processing
techniques...

I use a Canon T3i (unmodified) and am running DeepSkyStacker333beta45 to
process images (64-bit Win7)...

This first attempt is 20 darks and 20 lites (of Orion) using a 50mm
lens, 61sec @ ISO-800 @ f/2.0...

I set the stars limit to 4% and processed them using Stacking
Parameters: "mosaic mode", and "Median Kappa-Sigma clipping" for both
lites and darks and Recommended Settings: "Sigma combination method"...

It processed then I adjusted the RGB levels in the histogram so that
"towers" were all aligned together - originally, the RED was way over to
the left...

I made no changes to Saturation or Luminance...

A JPEG version of the results can be found at
http://angelsinfo.info/ap_images/20120320-Orion-20-61secs.jpg

The final TIF image is 103mb and can be found on my website at:
http://angelsinfo.info/ap_images/20120320-Orion-20-61secs.tif

Even though the RGB towers were centered and adjusted to all be the same
height, it seems to me that the image has too much red... I am also
wondering about the appearance of lines in the image...

I'd appreciate any comments on the processing techniques...

Thanks!
