Microsoft
Security Essentials, the new no-cost, anti-malware service that helps protect
consumers against viruses, spyware and other malicious software, will be
available tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 29. It requires no registration, trials or
renewals and will be available for download directly from Microsoft at http://www.microsof
t.com/security_ essentials.
Making
Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) broadly available as a free consumer
download for genuine Windows-based PCs is part of the company's ongoing
commitment to provide a more trustworthy computing experience for all
customers. The company hopes to encourage broader adoption of anti-virus
protection across the consumer audience, which in turn will help increase
security across the entire Windows ecosystem. For business customers,
Microsoft continues to offer Forefront Client Security.
MSE
will have a positive impact on Forefront products, because it allows
Microsoft to capture additional threat intelligence from customers using MSE
and apply it to our security research, signature development and protection
capabilities in Forefront solutions.

The changes to the Windows 7 interface have gotten a lot of
play, but some of the new built-in tools are just as compelling. Some
improvements are less obvious — like the new or enhanced tools that are
included with the OS. Here we discuss 10 of these cool tools that make the
computing experience easier.
1.Action Center: Centralized
management is the name of the game today, and Windows 7 gives you a one-stop
shopping location where you can go to deal with security issues,
troubleshooting, and recovery, instead of searching out separate applets for
each. It’s all combined in an easy-to-use Control Panel applet, where you
get maintenance and security messages and can view performance information,
change UAC settings, and more, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1: The
Windows 7 Action Center provides a centralized location for dealing with
security and system problems.
This is an outgrowth of the
Security Center in Windows Vista. It made sense to combine security settings
and actions with system maintenance and recovery issues. The Action Center also
shows up as an icon in the system tray, which displays a red X if there are
problems you need to address, as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2: The Action
Center is represented by an icon in the System Tray to alert you when a message
needs your attention.
A nice touch is that Microsoft
makes it easy for you to turn the various types of notifications on or off, as
shown in Figure 3. Thus, if you have an antivirus program installed that
Windows doesn’t recognize, you don’t have to deal with constant
messages urging you to install one — just turn off virus protection
messages.
Figure 3: You can
turn the various types of notifications on or off as you wish.
2.Problem Steps Recorder: One
of the coolest new tools in Windows 7 is the Problem Steps Recorder (PSR)
— especially for those of us who provide support to Windows users. No
matter how hard they try, users often have problems accurately describing the
problem they’re experiencing or the steps they took before or after
experiencing it. Sure, Remote Assistance can be a godsend in those situations.
But you can’t always connect to the user’s computer in real time.
That’s when the PSR comes in handy.
It’s really a type of screen
capture software that records all actions — keystrokes, mouse clicks,
etc. — and saves the sequence of events in an MHTML page that documents
every step the user took, along with screenshots. You start the PSR by entering
psr.exe in the Start menu Search box or at the command prompt. The interface is
shown in Figure 4.
Figure 4: The
Problem Steps Recorder provides an accurate record of a user’s actions,
along with screenshots.
You can view the recorded steps in
IE by double-clicking the saved zipped MHTML file, as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5: You can
view the recorded steps in Internet Explorer.
3.ISO burner: An ISO image is
a type of archive file that is often used to distribute software. In Windows 7,
Microsoft addressed something that’s been on the wish list of many users
for a long time: Now you don’t have to download and install a third-party
program to burn an ISO file to disc. This also works for images with the .IMG
file extension.
It’s a simple process: After
you download an .ISO to your hard drive, just double-click it and Windows 7
will open the Burn Disc Image dialog box, shown in Figure 6.
Figure 6: Now you
can burn an ISO image to disc easily without installing third-party software.
4.Biometric device management:
In earlier versions of Windows, biometric authentication and management of
biometric devices (fingerprint sensors) required third-party software that
might or might not integrate well with the OS. Now it’s built in. Windows
7 includes the Windows Biometric Framework, which gives developers an API they
can use to build biometrics into applications. Makers of fingerprint sensor
hardware, such as UPEK and AuthenTec, worked with Microsoft on the development
of the Framework. Biometric devices are managed through a Control Panel applet,
shown in Figure 7.
Figure 7: You can
change biometric settings and manage devices through a Control Panel applet.
5.Credential Manager: The
Credential Manager is another new feature in Windows 7. It is similar in some
ways to the password management feature in Vista’s User Accounts applet
but is more sophisticated. You can manage Windows credentials for various
computers that you sign onto, certificate-based credentials, and other generic
credentials (for e-mail accounts, Web accounts, etc.). These are all stored, by
default, in the Windows Vault, as shown in Figure 8.
Figure 8: Windows
7’s Credential Manager can store passwords and certificates in a central
location.
Perhaps the best new feature in
Credential Manager is the ability to back up and restore the Vault. Microsoft
recommends that you back up your credentials to a removable drive, such as a
flash drive, to make it easier to restore them if you have a hardware failure.
6.Display projection and Windows
Mobility Center: If you give lots of presentations, you’ll welcome a
new tool in Windows 7 that makes it easy for you to display your Windows 7
portable computer’s desktop on a projector. Just press the Windows logo
key + P and you’ll see the pop-up box shown in Figure 9.
Figure 9: The
Display Switch settings box lets you quickly change how you want your desktop
displayed.
The first setting is the default and displays on the
computer screen only. The second setting clones the display on the computer
screen to the projector. The third setting extends the desktop across both the
computer screen and the projector, and the fourth setting displays via the
projector only and turns off the computer screen. Pressing the Windows logo key
+ X opens up the Windows Mobility Center. Through this interface, shown in
Figure J, you can turn on presentation mode. This disables your screensaver,
sets your wallpaper to a neutral one and even puts your IM client on “do
not disturb” status. (Figure 10)
Figure 10: When
you’re presenting, you can set your laptop to Presentation mode.
7.Text tuning and color
calibration: Your computer does the work, but your monitor is what you look
at all day. If it doesn’t look good, you don’t get the most out of
your computing experience, and you can even strain your eyes. Windows 7
includes two great tools for adjusting your display to fit your preferences.
You can access the ClearType Text Tuner from Control Panel or from the command
line (cttune.exe). If you have multiple monitors, you can tune the type on each
of them individually, as shown in Figure 11.
Figure 11: You can
tune the ClearType text on each of your monitors to suit your preferences.
The tuning tool works somewhat like
those eye charts at the optometrist’s office: You select the one that
looks best to you, as shown in Figure 12.
Figure 12: To tune
the text display, you pick the text that looks best to you.
In addition to the text tuner,
Windows 7 provides a color calibration tool. It’s accessible from the
Control Panel or from the command line (dccw.exe). It helps you to adjust the
gamma, brightness, contrast, and color rendition on your monitors for the best
display, as shown in Figure 13.
Figure 13: The
Windows 7 Color Calibration tools helps you optimize your display.
8.System Repair Disc: The
Vista Service Pack 1 betas included a new feature that let you easily create a
system repair disc with a friendly graphical interface, but it was removed in
the final release of SP1. Windows 7 restores this functionality. Just click
Start and type System Repair in the Search box. Click on Create A System Repair
Disc. This opens the dialog box shown in Figure 14.
Figure 14: Windows 7
makes it easy to create a system repair disc.
To use the disc, put it in your
drive and reboot the computer from the disc. (You may have to set the CD/DVD
drive as the primary boot device in your BIOS.) Then, you’ll get a list
of system recovery options, which include:
·Startup repair
·System restore
·System image recovery
·Windows memory diagnostic
·Command prompt
9.Better backup utility: Of
course, previous versions of Windows included a backup utility, but this tool
has been significantly improved in Windows 7. Vista’s backup program was
user friendly but not very flexible. Windows 7 gives you more granular control
over what you want to back up. You can also exclude specified folders from the
backup.
You can invoke the Backup And
Restore applet from Control Panel or by typing Backup in the Search box on the
Start menu. You can back up your files to a local hard disk, a removable disk,
a DVD, or another computer on the network. (You may need to provide credentials
to access a network location.) Then, you can choose to back up libraries or
individual folders, as shown in Figure 15.
Figure 15: The
Windows 7 Backup utility lets you back up the folders you choose.
10.PowerShell v2: Windows
PowerShell (Figure 16) is a command-line shell interface and scripting tool
that makes it easier for Windows administrators to automate tasks using cmdlets,
which are commands that perform single tasks, and scripts, which are made up of
multiple cmdlets to perform more complex, multi-step tasks.
Figure 16:
PowerShell is included in Windows 7 by Default
Previous versions of Windows include a command-line interpreter
(command.com or cmd.exe), but PowerShell is much more powerful, providing a
UNIX-like command environment that can automate almost every GUI functionality.
PowerShell can be downloaded to run on Windows XP or Vista, but Windows 7 is
the first client operating system that comes with it built in. (It is also
installed by default in Windows Server 2008 R2.) PowerShell v2 adds about 240
new cmdlets, as well as new APIs and features, such as the ability to invoke
PowerShell scripts and cmdlets on a remote computer. You can find out more
about PowerShell on the Microsoft
Web site.

Dear Eman
Microsoft Forefront Client Security is very light and easy to be deployed. Also you can find a lot of script that can remove Symantec EndPoint 11 and install FCS instead.
FCS is using WSUS and Microsoft Update Site to update the clients which make the update process very easy to be managed by administrators. Also the FCS gave very nice report about the status of the clients.

Dear Mohamed
FCS was in the previous Magic Quadrant of Gartner; and he was
not mention in the current Quadrant but I believe that the next Generation will
be there for sure as there will be a scenario name “Zero-Day Scenario”
that will Allow the TMG to detect any Malware trying to connect to the network;
and it will notify the Striling Management Server which will automatically
disable the user account; the email account and the OCS Account.
Concerning the part of the top 10 best products; maybe you are
looking to the list of the consumer products as FCS is not for selling for
normal user; it is only available for enterprise customer.
Forefront Client Security is also certified by industry-leading
organizations, and has the VB100% award:
·ICSA has acted as the
security industry’s central authority for research, intelligence, and
certification testing of products for over a decade. They certify over
95% of the installed base of antivirus, anti-spyware, and other security
products commonly deployed in the world today.
·West Coast Labs is an
independent organization that tests security products. Its Checkmark
system is a quality testing and certification service with established,
independent standards on product effectiveness.
·Virus Bulletin carries
out independent comparative testing of anti-virus products. The VB100
award was first introduced in 1998.
(ICSA and West Coast Labs certifications are updated on a
monthly basis, and Forefront Client Security has consistently been in good
standing since its launch.)
In recent tests, Microsoft’s anti-malware engine ranked
among the leaders in anti-virus protection.
In August, AV-Test.org published the results of its testing of
29 anti-virus engines against more than 870,000 malware files discovered during
the last six months. Engines tested included those from Symantec, McAfee,
Trend Micro, Bitdefender, and others. Microsoft’s anti-virus engine
was among the leaders, detecting more than 96% of the malware samples.
Also in August, AVComparatives conducted its second test of
consumer anti-virus products in 2007, which covers a malware sample covering
approximately the last three years. Windows Live OneCare detected more
than 90% of the malware samples and receiving their certification.
Also when you review the list and review the prices; you will
find that FCS with this performance VS cost is really a good deal. And as I
mentioned a lot of enterprise company had moved to Forefront and working in the
migration. Also I mentioned that CERN had start the migration.

By combining a stable design with scanning innovations, the FCS
agent efficiently uses system resources, scans quickly, and detects malware
effectively. We commissioned West Coast Labs to do technical
performance benchmarking on a number of dimensions. West Coast Labs
used two test networks during the test program:
·Test Network One
simulated a business environment where machines were older and had limited
resources,
·Test Network Two
simulated a business environment where machines were modern and
up-to-date.
As you can see in the above results, Forefront Client Security
compared favorably against a number of competitors, particularly in average use
of CPU and memory; boot time increase; and scan time. When you factor
this against recent test results around malware detection, you can see that FCS
is very competitive with leading vendors.
Background information:
All scanning tests were performed on both networks. A server of
an identical specification, an Acer Aspire T180 PC, Athlon 64x2 with 1 Gb
memory was used in each network. Test Network One was composed of five
older machines and the server; the five client machines were:
·WCL007, 1.2 GHz, 504
Mb memory and a 20 Gb hard disk.
·WCL009, 900 MHz, 524
Mb memory and a 15.3 Gb hard disk.
·WCL018, 650 MHz, 650
Mb memory and a 20 Gb hard disk.
·WCL055, 1.3 GHz, 256
Mb memory and a 20 Gb hard disk.
·WCL064, 2.4 GHz, 256
Mb memory and a 40 Gb hard disk.
·Test Network Two was
composed of Dell 170L(sd)s, all 2.66 GHz with 512 Mb RAM. All
workstations ran unpatched Windows XP Professional SP2.
The switches in use for each network were also different; Test
Network One used an SMC EZ switch (10/100) while Test Network Two used a Dell
PowerConnect 332L switch (10/100/1000) .
Boot-time increase: Measuring real-time scanning impact
and on-access performance drag, pre-scheduled scanning performance drag and
system responsiveness after on-demand scanning, including examples such as Word/Excel
cold start speed.

Dear Waleed
Thanks for sharing information about FCS.
Actually I am a symantec user for more than 6 years.
Two years ago, I tried to test FCS, and found it a very light and effective
one.
Manageable, Easy updates and background working without taking a lot of
resources are really the main benefits of this product.
But the main thing that makes me stop going to this product is its lower
reputation as AV for the enterprises.
I couldn't even find its name within the 10 listed best products !!
So if you have any information about its good reputation nowadays (as AV
assessment sites references , not MS ones), kindly share it with us.

Many thanks

UAE mobile phone company i-mate has gone out of business,
according to market sources.
The company, which mainly sold branded smartphones, has
closed its office in Dubai Internet City and founder and CEO Jim Morrison is
believed to have left the country.
Staff were told to take compulsory two-month unpaid leave in
an e-mail last Wednesday, according to employees, but the next day received
information that the operation was closing and found the office locked.
Calls from ITP to i-mate's DIC office and to Morrison have
gone unanswered, and the office is shut.
Retail partners of the company have also been told
unofficially that it is no longer in business.
i-mate de-listed from the UK AIM stock market in November of
last year, after its share price dropped to 0.12 UK pence.
At the time, Morrison told arabianbusiness.com that the
company was speaking to two new investors, to finance new products and that the
company was also seeking to buy its own manufacturing facilities in China and
buy into software development. The company would also seek a new listing, this
time on the Dubai stock market.
Morrison blamed the company's drop in share price on
short-selling, although increased competition in the smartphone market,
especially from the Far Eastern original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that
provided i-mate's hardware, and problems with suppliers were believed to have
caused problems.
In February, the company launched a new rugged smartphone,
the i-mate 810F, to target more niche market segments, although it was the last
handset release to date.
Earlier this summer i-mate is understood to have shifted to
a new channel model, based on engaging in direct relationships with retailers,
rather than going through distribution.
One Middle East retailer which had signed a direct agreement
with i-mate said it had not received delivery of a new device that was due to
ship and was today told by a purchasing contact from within the company that it
had "shut down".
"The inventories for the new model have been sitting
with i-mate and we placed a purchase order last month and were waiting for
deliveries, but they never came through," said the retailer. "Our
buyers have been trying to call them for the last three days, but they kept
answering the phone and promising to call back without saying anything. One of
my buyers has just asked them if they have shut down and they said yes."
The retailer added: "A new line-up was supposed to be
being released in the summer, around August, but it never came out. They were
also another two or three really good models that were due to be coming out
around December or January onwards, such as a rugged smart phone. They were
basically going with niche products in the smart phone segments and trying to expand
out to the typical business user and pick up a new audience, which seemed like
the right strategy at that stage for them as well."
Another market source said i-mate had been quiet in the
market over recent months, raising questions over the future direction of the
company.
"We have not heard of them releasing many products in
the market so either they have been working on releasing the products or
working on exiting the device business. A couple of months back they stopped
doing distribution and started taking shelf space directly with many retailers,
but all of a sudden it seems to have stopped."
i-mate was formed in 2001 in Glasgow, and became a high
profile addition to Dubai Internet City in 2003. It listed on the UK AIM market
in September 2005, posting profits of $22.5 million in its first year.
The company came to prominence as one of the first vendors
of Windows Mobile smartphones, with product distribution throughout the Middle
East, US, Asia Pacific and Europe, and offices in the UAE, Australia, Italy,
UK, Singapore and the USA.
The company's hardware, which included pocket PCs and smart
picture frames was all sourced from Far Eastern equipment manufacturers,
initially HTC, although this deal ended and the company then worked with a number
of different OEMs to source hardware, releasing some 25 Windows Mobile devices
in total.
