In July 2000, the InterBase 6.0 beta source code was opened under the InterBase Public License (IPL), a variant of the Mozilla Public License (MPL) and open development of "the daughter of InterBase", Firebird, began.

Firebird has gone from strength to strength under the auspices of the Firebird Project, an international community of dedicated developers.
