At the dashpoint, middle of nowhere, Boone County Iowa. Actually there is an
oasis of life, just north of the dashpoint, a farmhouse with belt of surrounding
trees in the middle of flat sea of soybeans and some corn. Farmhouse is #63
(usually bigger numbers on rural Iowa roads). Another farmhouse visible just to
north of small hill past the DP (had to get up to get reception) that is filled
with old junk farm machinery.

Final mobile report, parked on gravel road north of dashpoint which is 44m away
in soybean field. Almost missed turn to closest access since main road split and
went two directions, neither to the point. Modern farmhouse at the corner of
this gravel road but otherwise flat and featureless. No roads to challenge new
dashmobile, Prius could have made this loop and saved about 6 gallons of gas,
but mileage on Subie is averaging 2.1 mpg more than its rated level, so not too
bad.

Now just back to I-80 for the route home.

Thanks for getting me and new dashmobile out for its second dash.

GDAX-AGUC, #370 visited
Lane County, Oregon near Vida
9/15/11, 9:55 AM PDT
Temp 62 F, partly cloudy
Elv 246 m

I could note that the dashpoint is in the westbound lane of Oregon Highway 126
shortly after a passing lane ends. I could add that it is adjacent to house
45911 which has two identical satellite dishes in the front yard and call it
good. But what would be the fun it that? Let's explore some prominent features
nearby.

Although I couldn't see it from here because of the trees, the McKenzie River
parallels the highway to the south about 100 m away. A person in a boat might be
near scoring range. The McKenzie is a major drainage in Oregon which we had been
following for over 45 miles from where it originates in the lava fields of the
Cascades. It continues another 45 miles to empty into the Willamette River near
Eugene which was our destination for the day, so the dashpoint is at the river's
halfway point.

There are many pullouts and boat ramps along the way, and one of the best
mountain biking trails in the country follows the upper part. The famed McKenzie
Drift Boat used on rivers was designed to run the local rapids.

The dashpoint is about 800 m east of the small town of Vida (pop. about 1000),
established in 1898. Vida caters to river enthusiasts and has the second-longest
covered bridge in Oregon.

GDAX-AGIN, #371 visited
Lane County, Oregon near Crow
9/16/11, 12:25 PM PDT
Temp 67 F, mostly cloudy
Elv 317 m

I took a short drive into the hills west of Eugene to visit AGIN--ag'in for the
fourth time--but the first time I have been to Crow, a small town established in
1874 near the pioneer Applegate Trail. Crow was apparently named after a
founding family rather than the bird, and the local school mascot is,
paradoxically, a cougar.

The dashpoint is about 3 km southwest of crow off paved Wolf Creek Road in a
field behind a house. I turned on unpaved Sturdevant Drive to get within scoring
distance. Maps show Sturdevant continuing into the hills but it is gated just
past the dashpoint. Two houses with driveways off of Sturdevant have interesting
mailboxes: number 56 (partial?) is painted with a Chevrolet Bel Air and there is
a sign in the background, "Bel Air Drive"; number 25989 has a metal-cut "GARY"
with a steam locomotive above. Rural mailboxes can be fun.

September has been an unusually busy month, but I must get this full report of
my Labor Day Weekend dash run written. I had four days off, but a number of
tasks to accomplish besides geodashing. My son, Todd, was off on Sunday and
Monday and was interested in navigating for a dash run so off we went for those
two days.

AXCUYB

We left early on Sunday and drove to Norfolk, VA, were we found AXCUYB a few
hundred yards southeast of the large rail yard in western Norfolk. The DP is at
the corner of Wayanoke St. and Westover Ave. A telephone pole with yellow
flowers adorning its base marks the spot. A gray two story house surrounded by
a chain link fence is on the corner a few yards away.

AXCYKA

AXCYKA was a primary objective of our trip, a North Carolina east extreme.
Hurricane Irene had battered the North Carolina coastline less than a week
before and the DP was off the NC coast at the Outer Banks. Would we be able to
get there? Would the roads be open? Significant questions under the
circumstances. Preliminary checking indicated that NC-12 was closed
indefinitely due to being washed out very near the DP. We needed that
access…was it north or south of the DP? Further checking with a nice lady in
the Outer Banks Tourist Bureau revealed that the road was closed about a mile
south of the DP…we should be able to get there.

We proceeded south from Norfolk to the North Carolina Outer Banks through Kitty
Hawk (of Wright Brothers fame) to South Nags Head on NC-12 noting lots of
hurricane debris beside the road. We pulled off and parked on a reasonably
solid sandy shoulder and walked the quarter mile or so across the sparsely
vegetated dunes between the road and the beach. After negotiating the 25 foot
drop from the dunes we were on the beach. Since it was close to low tide, we
were actually able to score without getting our feet wet at 290 feet. I had
come prepared to get in the water if necessary, so I walked out in the surf
until I was 200 feet from the watery DP. After a few photos to record the
event, we scrambled back up to the dunes and returned to the car. Just to see
for ourselves, we drove the short distance further south and verified that the
road was indeed closed about a mile beyond the DP.

AXCURT

We retraced our steps almost to Norfolk before proceeding west to AXCURT a short
distance north of US-58 near Suffolk in very rural southeast Virginia. The DP
is about 150 yards east of Buckthorn Drive in a densely wooded area. The first
20 yards were nearly impenetrable with thick vines and thorns. Todd had shorts
on so didn’t even try. I don’t give up easily so I managed to bushwhack through
the perimeter to where it was merely difficult. I fought my way to within 300
feet of the DP and called it good enough. The egress was no less difficult. As
I was to learn later, I paid dearly for this effort with a severe case of poison
ivy.

AXCUOQ

AXCUOQ is just 15 miles further west along US-58 near Franklin. It is a third
of a mile from the nearest road, but the satellite view shows several possible
approaches. The first was from the back of the WalMart across a large soybean
field. A promising farm road around the perimeter of the field was clearly
marked with the dreaded No Trespassing sign so that was out. We tried another
approach from the north from another farm road (Woods Hill Farm). I trudged
around a wooded area through deep grass in an (possibly abandoned) orchard to
another impenetrable wooded area similar to what I had just suffered through
except this had water under foot as well. I had enough and called it quits.
When I got back to the car where Todd was waiting he had studied the maps and
determined that I had started out on the wrong side of the creek and if we
backtracked a bit it might be easier. As a result, we were able to drive along
a double track beside the creek to within 160 feet of the DP. Thank you, Todd.

AXCUKI

AXCUKI was supposed to be a drive by with a road going 300 feet from the DP near
Joyner, VA, but a third of a mile from the DP a gate barred entrance to the
road. A wide power line clearing appeared to go in the direction of the DP so
we opted to follow it. That was probably a mistake because after a quarter mile
or so the arrow pointed into the woods. This, however, was not nearly as
treacherous as the earlier woodland experiences. We made our way through to
within 300 feet of the DP where a double track road appeared. We decided to
take a chance that this double track was the same road as the gated road where
we left the car. We were rewarded with a much easier journey back to the car.
Interestingly, there was a sign by the gate advertising 432 acres for sale (call
Johnny Robertson).

It had been a long day driving 470 miles and enduring some pretty difficult DPs
so we retired in Stony Creek for dinner and sleep.

AXCUCA

AXCUCA is another DP deep in the Virginia woods almost a half mile from any
public road. The satellite view, however, shows a road? through the forest
going relatively close to the DP. We did not find where that “road?” came out
on the north end so we continued around to what appeared to be an entrance near
the south end. As it turned out, it was a buried fiber optic cable going
through the woods wide enough for a 4WD vehicle to pass. Interestingly every
now and then there were quad paths leading into the woods off of the fiber
access road. Todd began the third to half mile trek down the access road but
abandoned the effort when a very large puddle of water (remnants of Hurricane
Irene?) forced a detour through the “impenetrable” jungle of vines around the
water. I pushed on. I then got lucky and found a quad track that led from the
access road in the direction of the DP. I was able to get to the zero point not
far from the quad track in somewhat less dense forest. Except for an encounter
with a large turtle, the return trip to the car was uneventful.

I should note here that southeast Virginia has a LOT of trees. We observed
areas where a patch of forest was cleared (trees harvested for lumber) and then
planted with some other agricultural product. The road that brought us to the
fiber access above opened into an area where clear cutting of lumber was in
progress. Throughout the day we observed small to medium sized fields of corn,
soybeans, cotton, peanuts and tobacco. I actually got out and confirmed a
peanut field because it looks very much like soybeans (but shorter perhaps) from
the road. Sure enough there were little peanuts when I pulled a couple runners
out of the ground.

AXCUAL
AXCUAL was finally a relatively easy one. It is only 200 yards north of Genito
Road a few miles southeast of Powhatan, VA. The satellite view shows a long
driveway going in the direction of the DP. The Genito Presbyterian Church was
also nearby. We drove around to the back of the church where they were adding a
small addition to the church structure. Parked in back by a small playground we
were 320 feet from the DP. I walked around to the driveway mentioned above that
passed next to the church property and walked to within 250 feet of the DP.

AXCUAD

Oh my gosh! Another easy one. AXCUAD is but 230 feet west of Orchid Road in a
nondescript rural area of Virginia. The DP is very close to a two story yellow
house with brown shutters at 1002 Orchid Rd where an attractive sign on the
mailbox support indicates the Barlow family lives. I only got out of the car
long enough to snap a few reference photos.

AXCOYQ

Today’s easy DPs are a welcome relief from the forest treks of yesterday.
AXCOYQ is less than a mile west of US-15 a couple miles south of Palmyra…still
pretty rural Virginia. We stopped at the end of a very long driveway for 588
Little Mountain Road and were 130 feet from the DP. A white single story house
appeared to be about a quarter mile in the distance.

AXCOYD

The final DP of the trip was also an easy one. AXCOYD is only 40 yards north of
Wolftown-Hood Road sort of equidistant from Madison (east), Stenardsville
(southwest) and Ruckersville (south). We parked in the parking lot of the
Fairview Christian Church (erected in 1880) and I walked back along the highway
to an open grassy area with several kinds of wild flowers and through the very
wet grass to the zero point.

Total distance travelled: 736 miles

It seems like the past few months for whatever reason, I haven't been able to do
any geodashes. Well, it looks like we should be able to find a few this month.
AQYK is located just off Utah route 88 and not far from Pelican Lake. Highway
88 is a busy road with lots of traffic having to do with the oil/natural gas
business. We took a Sunday afternoon drive and were able to get very close with
no problems.

The Queen of the Scotts dash

I'm up in Scotland for a couple of days with work so I saw this one as a
possible target for a dash hunt on the way up.

The dashpoint is actually in a field off a blocked off road called Dark Entry on
the outskirts of Linlithgow. The path starts just before a signpost that says
that it was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scotts and twinned with Guyancourt.
Underneath this is another sign saying Cittaslow and Fairtrade Town.

I knew what fairtrade was but had to Google Cittaslow. It means that the town is
working, along with some 140 other towns across the world, to improve the
quality of life for residents and visitors see http://www.cittaslow.org.uk/ for
more details. So, I learned something new today. :o)

I forgot to bring the right lead for my camera (well the FinePix S5800 anyway)
so I'll have to upload the pictures when I get home.

3 points to EnDash! and Morseman please Scout.

in the city of University City, so called because it is the home to Washington
University, one of the best universities in the whole St. Louis area. It is
also very expensive. The city itself is an interesting combination of young
people and diverse suburbanites thus making an eclectic but fun mix of peoples
living in this area. A nice shopping district known as The Loop Is here, adding
to the flavor of the place. This dashpoint is in a residential area away from
the university and the shopping along a short loop of a street called Nob Hill
Lane that runs off of the less than creative named 81st Street and contains
perhaps 15 or 20 houses. I stopped at the back corner of the loop in front of
#8 Nob Hill Lane, a single story brick façade house very much like most of the
others along the street. I was 30 meters away from the dashpoint which appeared
to be in their backyard. On the opposite side of 81st St. where Nob Hill Lane
comes out is a Middle School where many families were milling about with many
small boys wandering around, fully decked out in football uniforms. I couldn’t
tell if they were headed to a game, to practice or returning from the same.

Dashpoint: GDAX-BYFO
Coordinates: 38.8377, -90.0374
Location: Madison County, IL, about 25 miles NE of home
Date/time: 17 Sep 2011 1:14 PM
Temperature: 67 F
Closest approach: 15 meters
Map research showed this point to be over 400 feet from the road, in a farm
field and out of scoring range but the satellite view showed what appeared to be
a road heading along the edge of the field and towards the dashpoint. Indeed,
this was the situation, when I drove up, a good, wide road was there but blocked
by a large sturdy iron gate. There were no signs and with plenty of space to
park, I got out and made the easy walk up the road to the back edge of a corn
field to get within 15 meters. The corn was tall and brown and the ears had
been harvested leaving just the corn stalks which I expect will be cut down
soon. Across the street was a nice little park but not too far beyond it are
the oil refineries in Roxanna which gave the skyline in that direction a
distinct industrial look.

Dashpoint: GDAX-BYCO
Coordinates: 39.1808, -90.1415
Location: Macoupin County, IL, about 43 miles NNE of home
Date/time: 17 Sep 2011 6:34 PM
Temperature: 66 F
Closest approach: 85 meters
We continued on, grabbing some caches until we reached this point on the
northern edge of the small town of Medora. Again, the dashpoint is in a field
of brown corn stalks, this corn still had ears on it. The field is formed by
the triangle of N Main St and north/south road where we were stopped and the
main highway, Rt. 267 which curved around to form a triangular piece of land.
The field to our west was also tall, brown corn stalks.

That’s 3 dashpoints and 9 points for RogBarn. Thanks for getting us out to see
some late season corn.

Haven't used this multi-form report in quite a while...

Total trip distance: 684.3 kilometers (425.2 statue miles)
Total trip time: 12 hours, 25 minutes

Sharon is on a knitting retreat and I have her car while mine is in the shop, so
I took a drive on a long loop to the east and north for two DPs, three
geovexilla and 17 geocaches. Also tried to get five benchmarks, but couldn't
find any trace of four of them, and the fifth was buried deep in mud and grass,
although enough of the pedestal showed for me to tell that it was probably still
there.

After picking up a geovexillum in the San Fernando Valley, and then driving for
more than an hour, I was heading north on 170th Street West. I had expected to
need to park on this street, and walk to scoring, but I was pleasantly surprised
to see that Avenue F was a wide, well-graded dirt road. In fact, I saw several
other roads in similar condition out here, and I suspect that the County of Los
Angeles is upgrading things in possible preparation for a massive development
push.

Whatever, I took advantage of this to drive to my closest approach, on the
northern edge of the graded strip. I got out just long enough to take a photo
looking north: mostly grasses and clumps of sagebrush, intermingled with a lot
of Dove Weed, which is also called Turkey Mullein, as the seeds are a favorite
of both doves and wild turkeys. The Tehachapi Mountains are way off in the
distance. The nearest house was off to the west, up the Avenue.

GDAX-AJIM

Location: northeast of Taft, near what is left of Buena Vista Lake
Local Time - 3:27 pm, PDT
Elevation: 91 meters
Straight-line distance from home - 114.32 kilometers, at 352º true

From the first DP, I headed to I-5, then CA-99, and on to Bakersfield for
another geovexillum and a few caches, then drove west on CA-119. I crossed I-5,
and then turned left (south) on Enos Lane. This is the access road to the Buena
Vista Lake Aquatic Recreation Center, a favorite boating spot for the Central
Valley of California. The lake used to be many times larger, but also quite
shallow, and was a major stop of the Pacific Flyway, as well as a watering hole
for tule elk and many other animals. But it dried up decades ago as farming
took all the drainage from the hills.

But I digress, as is my wont ;-) I turned left (east) on Union Road, which
takes a bend around the eastern end of the lake, and reached just over 100
meters. There is a large farm field here, harvested within the past couple of
weeks, and not yet re-furrowed for the next crop. Couldn't tell what had been
the crop, but the stiff stalks that remained might have been from fodder corn,
or even barley, I suppose.

An irrigation canal runs along the back of this field, and a good dirt road ran
along it. As no one was around, I drove out there to see if I could score from
it, but the best I could do was 112 meters, so I went back to pavement, parked,
walked about four steps to hit 98m, took a photo, and headed back to the
highway.

chaosmanor

Wherever you went, there you were; it was generally a very pleasant day, in
urban sprawl and desert emptiness, in farm fields and oil fields. Nice to be
able to take advantage of it :-)

Sandwiched between I-80 and US 34 we easily found the point in a less common

north of us and on east side of the road was checking his mail and giving us the

Misread the map and thought we could reach this point. Right off US 30 (the old
Lincoln Highway and first transcontinental driving route) we had wide shoulder
and anticipated walking short walk to score but hit unfenched but too dense to
enter cornfield. In this flat and boring country better planning could have
saved us this unscored sidetrip and left more primetime for later part of the
trip.

I decided not to try this one on the Wednesday of my business trip to Scotland
as the weather wasn't too good and it definitely looked like needing a walk to
get to.

The dashpoint is located in a field of hay that has been harvested and there
were big circular bails of the stuff dotted around the place.

According to the map there was a footpath across the field but it took a bit of
finding. The main bridle path was clearly marked but the path across was less
clear, but I found it eventually. I took a couple of pictures, including one of
the 11kV over head line that runs round the edge of the field.

As the going was a bit muddy, and I had about 230 miles to drive home, I just
got to within scoring distance and headed back to the car and drove back home.

En route to a dance weekend in York, PA, we took a short detour to AXCUGA near
Leesburg, VA. It is in a relatively new section of very large McMansions on
multiacre lots. It is about 200 yards east of Perthshire Ct. It was raining
quite hard so I did not bother with my camera. With my rain jacket on, I walked
across the corner of the well manicured lawn of one of those brick Mcmansions (I
didn't get the address), stepped over the downed section of fence and about 20
yards into a large open field with tall (and very wet) grass to where I was
within 300 feet of the DP. That was close enough and I hurried back to the
shelter of the car.

Actually, it was more than 300 miles to get home. I've no idea where the figure

After our previous miss we followed US30 back into Grand Island and looped
around the south side of town. We passed by a large and newly exhibition grounds
and realized this was probably the new location of the Nebraska State, now moved
from its original location in Lincoln. With the focus on animal husbandry there
were multiple veterinary clinics. Then we encountered (already in range) a small
new subdivision of green duplexes. The point was in a fenced backyard of what
appeared to be an older home, but once back on the main road we discovered it
was another veterinary clinic.

This dashpoint was the planned highlight of this trip even though it seemed
unlikely we could reach it. It's in the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge which
allows full public access and possibly offroad driving (the sign said "do not
disturb the wildlife" but somehow the allowing hunting of said wildlife would
seem to be rather disturbing). Now that we have AWD high clearance vehicle we
figured we might be able to tackle any "roads" that don't even appear on the
maps and get close enough to the dashpoint to hike to it.

The "Sandhills" of Nebraska would be one of the world's largest sand dune
deserts, but there is just enough rain to keep the sand stabilized with grass so
it doesn't look like a desert. Meanwhile the Ogallala aquifer, the largest in
the country, underlies this area and creates many springs, so the area is also
full of lakes, ponds and marshes. The precipitation is too low for most farming,
but makes for great rangeland for cattle (originally the millions of bison that
roamed this area). The cattle are our second reason for spending the night in
the town of Valentine in that the best steaks we ever had came from those range
cattle in one of several steakhouses in the town. It is more drab in the fall
but this is about the most "wild" part of Nebraska and it's not visited much so
a great place for some solitude.

So, we found the one road Google and Delorme both said exists, just south of the
Refuge and so headed west. The typical section line roads (one mile grid roads)
found in most of Nebraska disappear out here and often roads that show on maps
are just long driveways to a single ranch and thus usually forbidden access. But
the road south of the refuge led to two ranches, but after a few miles we did
hit a locked gate well short of the closest approach we had expected to achieve.
There was one other approach, so we drove back to the main road, getting caught
in long construction delay and then found the one "scenic" 4WD road (actually
good road) through the refuge, but at the sign explaining the rules that offroad
driving was prohibited, even if we'd thought we might find some doubletrack to
the point we couldn't drive there but nonetheless took the scenic drive and
visited multiple lakes looking for the wildlife (saw some sort of pheasant or
grouse we still haven't identified).

So we missed the point but had a great time exploring the area. The Valentine
area, with the protected (Wild and Scenic designation) Niobrara River and the
two nearby wildlife refuges are about the most interesting recreational part of
Nebraska so trying to get the dashpoint was a great reason to come back to
Valentine, explore with our new, more robust dashmobile, have a great steak, and
then relax at a spa. Ah, geodashing, the good life.

deodasher can describe some of the plants, esp. the strange purple "tumbleweed",
we saw and a few of the wildlife. The refuge is home to over 270 species (of
larger animals and ten zillion insects, some of which flew in our car).

Thanks for getting us out, even for no score points.

Sometimes you get lucky. I'd mapped this as too far from any road but we checked
anyway, driving around all sides. Amazingly there was a doubletrack when we were
directly north of the point and there was no sign so we headed down the dusty
doubletrack. What was at the end of the road, which is exactly at the dashpoint
is the pump for the rotary irrigation system. So an unexpected score

Another point that seemed inaccessible via map evaluation was less than a mile
off our route so we gave it a try. Not only was the point in fenced fields
several of the roads shown on map (we planed to loop the point) so we never got
very close. This is dry ranch country and the road was white powdery soil with
big ruts that made us glad it's not a wet day

The first scored DP of our 2 day trip to Valentine, NE. The point was in a
field down hill from a farm house where someone was fetching his paper and
giving us the eye.

GDAX-BIIN
This DP was on the south side of Grand Island near the Fonner Park Fairgrounds
where the Nebraska State Fair is now held. It was in the back yard of an older
house surrounded by new duplexes and a veterinary office.

GDAX-BIIC
This dashpoint was just beyond the fence surrounding a pasture. We chose not to
walk all the way to the fence as there were mowed plants covered with stickle
burrs. We already had to clear the floor mats of burs from some other trips
into the weeds.

GDAX-BISU
This was a fun DP to score because I had to insist that Douq drive into the
field on the two track. He was certain the farmer was going to see us. But my
insistence allowed us to zero the point. After leaving the field, we discovered
that the farmhouse was just on the other side of a stand of trees. We had
escaped detection and fulfilled the geodash quest.

The Sandhills were wonderful. The Valentine National Wildlife Refuge was a
delight. I had no idea there was so much water and marshland in the Sandhills.
We also saw some plants that were totally purple or red in color. Douq thought
there were tumble weeks, I thought they were more like a heather. Still trying
to identify them.

Thanks for getting us out.

GDAX-AGUL -- San Bruno, California
==================================

I found this dashpoint on the ramp leading from southbound 101 to westbound 380
near San Francisco International Airport. The zero point is in a grassy area to
the left of the flow of traffic and I was able to get within 23 meters of it
this afternoon.

There was an orange MEN AT WORK sign posted near the dashpoint that, strangely
enough, was hung upside down. I didn't see any workers (upside down or
otherwise) so perhaps it was for workers on 101.

Sorry, no pics at 65 MPH!

Three points for me and for Team Trailblazers.

Page as well as all individual games. Anyone else having this same problem?
