Computer science major is cool again

U.S. undergraduate majors rise 8.1%, first increase since 2000
By Carolyn Duffy Marsan , Network World , 03/17/2009

<A HREF="http://ad.doubleclick.net/jump/idg.us.nwf.general/;pos=imu;sz=336x280;tile=4;ord=1238578609?"> <IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/idg.us.nwf.general/;pos=imu;sz=336x280;tile=4;ord=1238578609?" border=0 height="280" width="336"></A>

The number of computer science majors enrolled at U.S. universities increased for the first time in six years, according to a Computing Research Association study being released Tuesday.

The Taulbee Study found that the number of undergraduates signed up as computer science majors rose 8.1% in 2008. Total enrollment in computer science classes -- including majors and pre-majors -- was up 6.2%.
U.S. tech industry heavyweights, computer science educators and CIOs hailed the news as a sign that IT is becoming more popular with teens.
"We've been seeing the number of computer science majors going down, and we've been partnering with universities to try to reverse that and get more high school students interested in the field," says Yvonne Agyei, director of talent and outreach programs in Google's People Operations Department. "We're really excited to hear that the trend is going in the opposite direction."
CRA said the popularity of computer science majors among college freshmen and sophomores is because IT has better job prospects than other specialties, especially in light of the global economic downturn.

Is your Hard Disk dead ?
Save-it !

Your Hard Disk seems dead. It's not responding anymore. You hear a few "biz biz" when you're trying to boot from it and then it stops and you can't access it.

You try everything, and I mean everything because I know you... You even knock it, you even rock it because you remember having read that it might help. And that's true, the damned thing is just stucked in there. You well may succeed, but maybe not. You lost everything, and a hard disk.

Stop crying. The thing is dead, so why don't you open it ? You have nothing to loose. Get a screwdriver and have a peek inside. Don't touch the plates, don't touch anything. Plug it. Try to boot, from it or from another one or from a floppy, doesn't matter.

Observe. As you start up, the arm moves a bit (biz biz) but then it stops. Push on it a bit. The head will now go all the way to the inner part of the plates. That's the " biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz biz " you're familiar with. If not, cut the power off and put it back on ; try something, you'll get lucky.

Save your data on another disk.

At the next restart, maybe you'll have to help it again, maybe not. It depends on how lucky you are.

With the top on

With the top off, and spinning

This one is an old one, a 20 MB Rodime that came with a Mac Plus. I plan to have a glass plate to cover it instead of the metal plate ; it's so nice to see that thing spinning and moving.

Warning

The plates are spinning really fast, up to 5000 RPM, and they are heavy. Take care not to drop something on them while they are spinning. And, of course, avoid touching the power supply components while the case is open. It is your responsibility to stay alive. I did survive.

8 Websites Every Microsoft .NET Developer Should Know About

Mar. 19th, 2009 By Sara Morgan Grand

There are currently millions of developers worldwide that are using Microsoft.NET technologies. If you are one of them or want to become one, then each of the websites I am about to list should be in your list of favorites, your list of bookmarks, or just written down on a piece of paper (yeah right, as if a .NET developer would use a pen and paper).

For those of you not familiar with Microsoft.NET technologies, they represent a platform and set of tools that computer programmers can use to build very rich, interactive applications for the Windows desktop, the Internet, or even hand-held mobile devices. Chances are strong that one of your favorite websites was built using Microsoft ASP.NET.

1. CodeProject

I cannot count the number of times I have downloaded code from this site over the years. The quick and helpful articles always include a code download and are written by real world developers who give you straight to the point help for a particular coding problem.

Developers who submit articles to the website are not paid, but instead submit the article and code to get approval of the site's community. The site covers more than just .NET and the Windows platform, so it is a good resource for developers that need to go outside of their normal skill sets.

2. DotNetNuke

DotNetNuke is an open source framework that developers can download and use to build their own web applications using Microsoft ASP.NET. If you are a .NET developer and you have not at least downloaded the code to look at it, then you really need to immediately.

The software has been through several iterations over the years and demonstrates some of the most efficient coding practices around. Even though the site includes a professional edition for purchase, there is a community edition which is free to download and very much worth registering free with the site to access.

3. 4GuysFromRolla

If you are a web developer, which let's face it, most .NET developers are, then this is a must visit site. It includes articles that cover everything you need to know about ASP.NET and even includes a lot of information for ASP developers (because, believe it or not, there are still developers out there using ASP).

Over the years, I have had numerous problems resolved by looking at posts on their forum or learned how to incorporate some slick new feature using one of the frequently posted articles.

4. DevSource

As you can see from the image, this online development magazine is sponsored by Microsoft, but don't hold that against them. I strongly suggest subscribing to their free weekly newsletter, since it will keep you up to date on all the latest rumblings coming out of Microsoft.

You also should check out the DevLife column, which includes regular posts by the experienced and very down to earth, Julia Lerman.

5. DevX

Another online development magazine, this one is not solely focused on Microsoft technologies and tends to profile some really interesting and niche technologies.

I have personally written several articles for them since they are one of the only web sites that wants articles about robotics and speech technologies. Their near daily stream of articles cover everything from traditional .NET development to VB classic (yeah, because there are still some people doing that still).

6. MSDN Magazine

MSDN Magazine is for the development world what the Nature Journal is for scientists. It includes standards that every developer should be following. They are VERY strict on what content gets into this journal. An article in MSDN magazine is typically much longer and more in depth than articles in any of the online resources I have previously mentioned. But you can feel assured that the articles were scoured and well picked though before making it to print.

7. Channel9

This Microsoft resource is a must see for anyone that loves to watch videos about really cool technologies. The Channel 9 team goes around the Microsoft campus interviewing various teams and often offers a sneak peek of up and coming software and technology.

In addition to interviewing the folks at Microsoft, Channel 9 also talks to industry gurus outside of Microsoft.

8. ScottGu's Blog

Scott Guthrie is the Corporate Vice President for the Developer Division at Microsoft and his regularly updated blog often features announcements not seen any where else.

Scott covers everything from .NET base class libraries to Silverlight. If you want to impress your developer friends with your seemingly inside track to Microsoft, this is the site to visit.

If you are a .NET developer and you know of some really helpful sites, drop us a note and let us know about them. There are tons of resources out there for .NET developers. These are just a few of my all time favorites, so we would love to hear of others that you like.

Playing games can improve your eyesight

A new 'Nature Neuroscience' study from the University of Rochester in the US claims that playing videogames can improve certain problems with deteriorating eyesight, such as 'lazy eye'.

The research proves that games improved the subject's "contrast sensitivity" and that they were able to notice very small changes in different shades of grey of vital importance when, for example, you are driving at night.

Contrast sensitivity can be affected by problems with aging eyes, such as the condition known as 'lazy eye' (amblyopia) and has previously required surgery and/or glasses as a fix.

Long-term improvements in eyesight

"Crucially, the improvements in this study were sustained for months or even years in some cases," reports the BBC, "suggesting that time spent in front of a computer screen is not necessarily harmful for vision, as has sometimes been suggested."

Researcher Dr Daphne Bavelier claimed that the stimulation and reward systems involved in gamers' necessarily quick responses to visual info on the screen was of massive benefit to the health of the eye.

Dr Bavelier wants to make more use of games to "restore the stereo vision lacking in people with a lazy eye."

Opinion: The top 10 operating system stinkers

Enough of the good old days! Let's talk about the bad old days of OSs instead.
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols

April 9, 2009 (Computerworld) I love old technology as much as the next techno-geezer, but come on, it wasn't all wonder and goodness. After we're done reminiscing about the good old days of operating systems, let's reflect on the bad old days of operating systems as well. After all, the bad times are still with us -- even in 2009, there are still some wretched operating systems out there.

In historical order, from oldest to newest, here's my own personal list of the top (bottom?) 10 OS stinkers.

OS/360, 1964

No, no, I'm not talking about the later versions of OS/360 that some of us used on IBM 360 mainframes back in the late '60s and early '70s. For its day, it was fine. Indeed, my very first operating system was an OS/360 descendant with TSO (Time Sharing Option) running on top of it.

What I'm talking about is the very first version of OS/360 -- the one that led its project manager, Fred Brooks, to write The Mythical Man-Month, his classic book on how software development fails. That first version of OS/360, to paraphrase Brooks, came in late, had flaws in its control programs, required more memory than planned, was over budget by several times the original estimate, and, oh yeah, it was slow too.

On the other hand, we did get a classic book on how not to develop software, which included such nuggets as "Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later." Brooks likes to describe it as a software developer's Bible, because "everybody reads it, but nobody does anything about it." As the rest of this tale shall reveal, he was right.

ITS (Incompatible Timesharing System), late 1960s

What can one say about an operating system written in DEC PDP-6 and PDP-10 assembly language that supported one mono-case, six-character filename ... per directory? (Yes, you read that right: Each file resided in its own separate directory.) And security was nil -- for example, no passwords were required, and you could log into anyone's active session and do pretty much anything you wanted with it.

What's amazing is that despite being an incredible pain to use and with no security whatsoever, ITS actually was an important operating system in its day. While it was eventually forced out by the rise of Unix, many programs still in use today, such as the Emacs editor and the Lisp language, got their start on ITS.

For more on ITS and the early days of computer hackers, check out Steve Levy's classic book, Hackers. You'll find it entertaining and amusing, and you'll be very glad you didn't have to use ITS.

GNU Hurd, launched in 1983, still incomplete

Ever wonder why some people refer to Linux as GNU/Linux? The official explanation is that Linux is merely an OS kernel that relies on GNU software to make a complete operating system. GNU was announced in 1983 as a future replacement operating system for Unix, to be made up entirely of free software.

But after more than 25 years in development, GNU remains incomplete: Its kernel, Hurd, has never really made it out of the starting blocks. (I'll refer to the complete OS as "GNU Hurd" to avoid confusion with other GNU software.) Almost no one has actually been able to use the OS; it's really more a set of ideas than an operating system.

And that's why I'm naming GNU Hurd as one of my top 10 stinker operating systems -- because after a quarter century, it has still failed to deliver on its promise of an entirely free Unix replacement. By incorporating ideas and software from GNU (and other sources such as Minix and BSD Unix), on the other hand, Linux has stepped in to pick up GNU Hurd's slack, providing an advanced operating system that is ready to use right now, in numerous distributions.

I, for one, am not willing to wait another 25 years for a chimera. Could we please just drop the dream of the GNU Hurd OS as an idea whose time will never come?

Windows 1.01, 1985

Microsoft's first attempt at a graphical user interface for MS-DOS was, in a word, dreadful. It was ugly, it shipped two years late and even then didn't work well. And besides, there wasn't anything that would run on it anyway. Windows applications really didn't get going until Windows 2.03 showed up two years later.

Adding insult to injury, by the time Windows 1 was launched, the Mac was already offering the far superior System 2.1. That Mac OS included AppleTalk networking, PostScript printing with the first LaserWriter printer and the first sophisticated PC-based file system: Hierarchical File System. There was no comparison.

MS-DOS 4.0, 1988

It's not like Microsoft was still spending much time in 1988 getting MS-DOS right. The earlier versions of the operating system really weren't bad for their day; MS-DOS 3.3 was actually quite good.

But then along came MS-DOS 4.0. Oh, it was horrid. Programs broke on it as regularly as clockwork. You'd be in the middle of a task, and your program would just freeze up completely. Nothing this bad was seen again until Windows' Blue Screen of Death.

To save their sanity, PC users either dropped back to MS-DOS 3.3 or moved to Digital Research's DR-DOS 3.41 as fast they could. Although the DR-DOS version numbers had been mimicking those of MS-DOS to show similar functionality, Digital Research chose to name its new 1989 version DR-DOS 5.0 to prevent anyone from thinking that it had any connection with MS-DOS 4.0.

SCO Open Desktop, 1989

On the plus side, it was the first 32-bit Unix with a graphical interface. On the minus side, its nickname was Open Deathtrap.

Open Desktop would, could, and did blow up in some of the most entertaining ways I'd ever seen. I had editors freeze up and compilers bring the entire system to a core dump -- and there were times I never knew which, if any, window I was actually working in.

Strangely, I was actually able to get productive work done on Open Desktop. I suspect I might have been the only one who managed it.

JavaOS, 1996

Want to know a really bad idea for an operating system? Write it in a language that's as slow as mud -- as Java was in 1996. Nevertheless, Sun, with some help from IBM, tried it anyway. JavaOS was designed to run on network computers and embedded systems.

How did it go? Well, let me put it to you this way: Have you ever heard of it? There are many well-known embedded systems: Qnx, VxWorks, Symbian, Windows CE and the list goes on. But even in embedded operating system circles, few people have ever heard of JavaOS.

Although several companies licensed it, the only product I know of that used it commercially was Sun's own long-forgotten JavaStation network computer. By 2006, Sun had dumped it into the "legacy system" junkyard, and that was the end of the Java-based operating system.

Windows Me (Millennium Edition), 2000

Until another Microsoft operating system came along a few years ago, Windows Me was the bottom of the Windows barrel. This successor to Windows 98 SE, ranked No. 4 on PC World's list of the 25 worst tech products of all time, tried to be both a 16- and a 32-bit operating system. It worked about as well as a horse with wheels for front legs and hooves for back legs.

It was also slow, unstable and insecure. OK, so those are all traits of Windows in general, but Me took it to an extreme. How bad was it? Microsoft sold it for only a little more than a year. Now, that's bad.

Lindows/Linux XP Desktop, 2001/2006

What happens when you try to put Linux and Windows together? Nothing very good. Lindows, when it first came out in 2001, promised to let you run all Windows applications on Linux. Lindows Inc. gave up on that as a bad idea within a few months. Even with WINE, a way to run Windows programs on Linux, the company couldn't get enough Windows programs running on Lindows to sell it as a Windows replacement.

Showing that some dumb ideas won't die, Russia-based TrustVerse has also tried the "We'll be everything Windows, but we're Linux" approach with Linux XP Desktop. It doesn't do much better with this idea than Lindows did; it does a mediocre job of running Windows applications, and its XP look and feel isn't anything to write home about. If you really want to run Windows applications on Linux, get CodeWeavers' CrossOver Linux.

Windows Vista, 2006

You knew this one was coming. Do I really need to recount everything that's wrong with Vista -- its bloat, its slowness, its hardware and software incompatibilities, its high cost, its confusing versions, its security fumbles and other ineptitudes?

Or how about the fact that several of its vital features wouldn't work on computers bearing a "Vista Capable" sticker? Let me share with you one early "review" of Vista:

"I chose my laptop (a Sony TX770P) because it had the Vista logo and was pretty disappointed that it not only wouldn't run [Aero], but more important wouldn't run [Windows] Movie Maker. ... Now I have a $2,100 e-mail machine."

This review's author? Mike Nash, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Windows product management, in an internal e-mail dated Feb. 25, 2007. Go argue with him, Microsoft fanboys, not me.

Need more proof that Vista's a dog? Let's see ... a third of new PCs are being downgraded to XP, and Microsoft keeps extending the cutoff date for XP sales while hurrying Windows 7 to market as quickly as it can. Woof woof.

So, there you have it, my list of stinkers. What do you think? What are your favorite operating system losers? Do you still use Open Desktop? How about Vista? Let me know in the article comments.

Google Analytics May Go Dark for Thousands of Sites

Written by Phil Glockner / April 8, 2009 7:30 PM

Royal Pingdom, a site narrowly focused on tracking and providing solutions for server uptime-related issues, released a survey report today, claiming that a full 40% of top sites using Google Analytics are using a javascript tracking module (urchin.js) that might simply stop working later this year. According to the report, 50% of these top 10,000 sites use Google Analytics, and almost half of those are still using the old tracking code.
Google switched to the newer tracking code well over a year ago, and according to a Google consultant interviewed by Pingdom, the old code may be deactivated in the next few months. Although we could find no official announcement from Google on their ongoing plans to keep the older code functional, all the Google documentation indicated that switching (at least when it was announced a year ago) was optional.
The report also points out these advantages (from the Google help system) to switching to the newer javascript code:
 • Faster, smaller source file
 • Automatic detection of HTTPS
 • Increased namespace safety
 • More convenient set up for tracking ecommerce transactions
 • More customizable code for interactive Ajax-based sites
 • Enjoying new features and reports as they roll out
Examples of top-tier sites still using the old tracking code include Google properties Blogger and DoubleClick, along with Wired, FoxNews and IGN. Will these properties be given as long as they need to make the switch? We agree with the conclusion of the report, which states:
"When urchin.js is finally decommissioned, will thousands of sites be caught without working statistics? We're guessing that Google won't allow this to happen, but you never know."
Perhaps it's best to integrate the newer tracking code sooner rather than later.
Update: The Official Google Analytics Blog has a new post up today that definitively states that their urchin.js analytics script will not be decommissioned without clear advance warning first, and they in fact have no plans to do so for the immediate future. We appreciate the clarification, thanks Google!

It is recommended not to so such thing unless you are in a clean room (no clear room yet in Middle East) - the nearest clean room is in Austria and the other maybe in Germany.

Clear room means there is no even micros things in the air!! Cost for such room start with few million US dollars and only few of them are available worldwide. The clean room I am referring to is much cleaner than the surgery room in any hospital!!

Okay, so what to do to recover the lost data?

If power is reaching the hard drive .. open the box carefully in the cleanest place you can have.

There are some parts (conductors / connectors) which you can sketch them slightly and carefully (using small tiny screwdriver) to remove some layers which as a result might making connection to conductors better.

Close the box and try now.

If it the mentioned process did not work, buy a similar hard drive from the market and make sure it has same serial number and same serial number for the inside board.

Open the box carefully in the cleanest place you can have.

Take out the old board carefully from your damaged hard drive and install the new board in a place of the old one.

Close the box carefully and try now.

Most likely it will work with you in this case.

If it is still did not work with you, don’t worry .. there is always a solution but it might be costly .. but for sure you can get your data back though a specialized company such as: Kroll Ontrack Inc.

The worst scenario might happen is; such company will bring a new hard drive that is exactly same as your damaged one and they will start putting that data in it (bits by bits) by using a microscope!!

This process will take time and it is costly, but definitely it will work.

I remember a case where a similar company to Kroll Ontrack Inc. were able to recover data from hard drive that has been thrown from Colombia space shuttle!!

It is so interesting to get deep in the “art of data recovery”.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hossam AlFraih

15 Firefox add-ons for Web developers

April 13, 2009 2:35 PM PDT by Don Reisinger

I've been working on a new Web site for the past few weeks. But instead of doing it alone, I decided to get some help from Firefox extensions. Tahey've made my work a lot easier, and they all can be downloaded in just a few seconds.
Aardvark: Aardvark lets you select elements from a Web page and perform various actions on them. I use it to analyze the structure of a page. You can also remove and isolate elements or generate DOM code. I highly recommend it.
ColorZilla

Find any code for the color you want.

(Credit: ColorZilla)
ColorZilla: If there's a color on a Web page that you like, ColorZilla will find the precise code for it and allow you to paste it into your coding program. You can also create custom colors with its built-in palette browser. It saves the most-used colors for easy access later on. It's powerful, it's simple, it's a must-have.
CSS Validator: CSS Validator adds a right-click option in your browser, sending the CSS to the W3C CSS Validator. It opens the results in a new tab. CSS Validator is a nice tool that will come in handy often.
CSSViewer: No Web designer should be working without CSSViewer. The add-on informs you of all the CSS information you'll need from a site. Simply click on the page you want, open it in the Tools menu, and it will display CSS information. I use it almost every day.
FireBug: Firebug is one of those extensions that you simply can't be without. It lets you edit, debug, and view CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. Once you make a change to the HTML on the site, Firebug automatically displays it in the same pane. It's extremely powerful.
FirePHP

FirePHP fills you in on all the issues with your PHP.

(Credit: FirePHP)
FirePHP: FireBug is a fine tool for CSS, HTML, and JavaScript, but FirePHP, which only works when you have the FireBug extension installed, creates a full-featured development experience. With the help of both add-ons, you can view the quality of your PHP and find errors. It's a great aid.
Font Finder: Font Finder allows you to highlight a font you like on any site, right-click on the selection, and after choosing "Font Finder", view the full CSS text styling of the selection. You can then paste that into your own Web page.
HTML Validator: HTML Validator is an extremely powerful tool available to Windows users only. The add-on gives you feedback about errors on the page. It also lets you know where problems need to be addressed. But unless you're an advanced Web designer, stay away from this tool. It's very complicated.
IE View: As long as you're running Windows, IE View is a helpful tool. The extension adds an "Open in IE" option in the right-click menu, allowing you to quickly open a site in Internet Explorer. It's a great way to check how a page looks in both browsers.
Java Console: If you want to see how Java applets are running on Web pages, the Java Console is for you. You can monitor and debug applets, and get a full report on their performance.
LinkChecker

LinkChecker lets you know where the dead links are.

(Credit: Don Reisinger/CNET)
LinkChecker: LinkChecker highlights links on any Web site and tells you if the link will direct you to a live site or if it will return a 404. I use it every day.
Poster: If you want to debug servers and make HTTP requests, Poster is the tool for you. It's easy to use, you can set a content type, and within minutes, you'll have all the information you need to inspect the results of your HTTP query. Useful.
Style Sheet Chooser II: Style Sheet Chooser II replaces Firefox's built-in style sheet switcher and allows you to pick an alternate style that will persist on all pages of a Web site. It's not something you'll use often, but when you do need something of the sort, Style Sheet Chooser II is the way to go.
Web Developer: If you install any of the extensions in this roundup, Web Developer should be included. It adds a menu and toolbar to Firefox giving you the option to display a page's style, view and edit CSS, and much more. No Web developer should be without it.
YSlow: YSlow requires FireBug to be installed for it to work, but it's a great way to find out why your site is running so slowly. It analyzes Web pages and returns issues that are slowing the site down, based on Yahoo's rules for high-performance Web sites. I use it often to find out where I can improve the speed of my sites. Try it out.

Thanks for the fruitful information. Just one thing to mention, which is the availability of the clean room in Dubai more than a year ago.

No one likes to take work home, but lately I've been looking forward to it. That's because I've been working on our new color filter in Google Image Search, and my daughter and I have been having a great time together looking at all the colorful animals that we've seen in the tide pools. "Papa, do the green noodle fish."

"Papa, now do the red one."

She loves it..

Today, I'm happy to announce that you too can use our color filter in your own image searches. Just search for something the way you normally would, such as [tulips]. On the results page, click on the "All colors" drop down in the blue bar and choose a color. For example, try restricting your results to [yellow tulips]. Want to see purple tulips instead? Simply click on the color filter again, select purple, and voila — you have pages of beautiful images!

You can also combine the color filter with any other image filter to further refine your search. For example, if you're looking for an image of an orange butterfly, try restricting to photos or clip art.

Color is one of the basic visual elements of an image. Whether you're browsing through photos of sea creatures and flowers or searching for the perfect orange butterfly, we hope you like our new color filter. We've been rolling this out gradually, but it will be available to everyone soon.

Google Launches API for Google Analytics

By Chris Crum - Tue, 04/21/2009 - 17:23

Google as announced the release of an API for Google Analytics. This means developers will be able to do all kinds of fun stuff with the program.

"Large organizations and agencies now have a standardized platform for integrating Analytics data with their own business data," says Google's Nick Mihailovski. "Developers can integrate Google Analytics into their existing products and create standalone applications that they sell. Users could see snapshots of their Analytics data in developer created dashboards and gadgets. Individuals and business owners will have opportunities to access their Google Analytics information in a variety of new ways."

The Google Analytics Developer Site has numerous examples of what non-Google developers are doing with it. Google does note that it doesn't vouch for performance of any o the apps using it.

Analytics API Example from Axiom

Google suggests using the following three resources when beginning to develop using the Google Analytics API:

- The documentation at Google Code
- the Google Analytics API Notify email group
- the Google Analytics APIs Group

For more details about how the API works, you can read this blog post from Google about it. It's going to be very interesting to see where developers take Google Analytics now.
