Here's a little bit of fun I just had creating an ad piece for Joost,
the new TV-over-the-web proggy from the creators of Kaazaa and Skype.

http://thebest3d.com/joost/

The original 3D dino is by Dan Ritchie/done in Lightwave3D, I added
some more foliage and the incoming meteor and the text stuff in PD Pro

By-the-way, Joost is adding more channels, great stuff. I love the
soccer channel there. It's not live (yet?), but it's great to see
these greatest moments in sport history, great goals and shots and
blocks etc... when you see Beckham bend it like he does, from half a
dozen of impossible camera views, it explains a few legends ;-)

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Here are the requirements. If you meet the requirements and are still interested read on.

You must be 21 and able to prove it (not porn but you need to sign a contract)
You must be experienced, I need to see a resume and at least 10 pieces, forward them in low res to me here at this address.
You must be able to meet at the same time once a week for an hour on-line to discuss the project.
This is a spec project, you won't be paid until the project is sold, and sign an agreement stating so.
You will not own any part of the project and sign an agreement stating so.
You will sign a non-disclosure agreement.
You will be required to work 5 to 10 hours per week.
You must commit to the project for at least one year.

If you are still interested read on.  I will be selecting 5 creative animaters to work on a project, the idea of which I expect to sell to a studio (hopefully major) within one year.  Workers on this project will receive a very small percentage of the net profit for this project and may have the opportunity to work on the project at some time when the project is sold.

Do not respond to me on this site as I will not check it.  If you are interested you must e-mail me at bobwoolsey@... with Animation Project in the subject line. Any other subject line will be discarded.

Yes, this is a test to see how you follow instructions. I already know you are probably creative as you are animators.

The five chosen people will need to be able to work alone and with others and think of creative ways to solve problems.  I need to start work ASAP on this project to beat similar projects to the market place by 2009.

If you are still interested please forward your resume and the 10 pieces in low res to me at bobwoolsey@....  If you have any questions please include those but I will not be answering questions until I receive you 10 pieces.  I will not discuss the specifics of the project until I have selected the 5 animators and they have signed the necessary agreements. The project is not listed on the web site as this is a highly confidential project and will remain so for about 6 months.

Do not respond to me on this site as I will not check it.  If you are interested you must e-mail me at bobwoolsey@...

Thank you,

Bob Woolsey

I would think from just reading his "list of demands"
would keep ANYBODY smart enough to do 3D/animations
from responding to this...he's all I WANT, I WANT, I
WANT...well who the hell are you to make such demands
?...you got NOTHING without artists...anybody can
dream up an idea...very few can make it real.

Please note the sarcasm.

Gaining experience is one thing - we all have to pay our dues at some point.
Being taken advantage of is something else entirely.

Yeah...I was like what the hell is this? Are you for real? Hmm..You
know what? On second thought...I was thinking of replying anyway.

Hello, I am interested in sending you a demo of my work. It will show
a character in his default rigged position, chain to the wall. The
only thing he will say is, "GET THE JOB DONE YOURSELF!" Thank you.

Hello!

We just added couple new nodes to library:

- Split Material node. It does reverse work to Make Material. You can take
pre-made material split it to channels,
modify and/or ignore them, and connect to Make Material and plug it to Material
input in Surface node. Useful for
learning how material works.

- Normal Pass node. It reads spot normal in world coordinates space and converts
it to color space. It should be
connected to Diffuse Shading input in Surface node.

- Normal Pass shader. Similar to Normal Pass node, but implemented as shader.

- Setup Normal Pass tool. It scans the all objects in scene, the all surfaces,
and applies Normal Pass shader in one
click.

Hello!

Our new LightWave 3rd party renderer has been released!

Features:

- render any resolution images, limitted only by available space of your hard
disk.
- using complete renderfarm power into rendering complex single test frame
quicker than traditional F9. Use your
renderfarm also in production instead of just final animation render!
- saving memory usage, reducing pagefile swap and rendering quicker.
- rendering scenes that normally failed to init due to lack of memory.
- rendering can be break and resumed at later time. As long as, scene is
untouched and control folder was not flushed.
- supporting volumetrics like TrueHair or HyperVoxels.
- does not support pixel-filters and image-filters due to LW SDK limits. For the
same reason as other 3rd party
renderers.
- working with ScreamerNet renderfarms, couple Layout instances on single or
couple machines, or other LWSN based render
controllers.

Generally a graphics card won't improve your final render any. Though a handfull of new high-end cards will share processining power and speed up renders a tad, the general rule is that your graphics card only helps in the speed and quality of your on-screen display while you work. For faster rendering, more RAM is probably the best answer. A faster processor and front side bus would help too. As for render quality, it won't be affected at all. Thats strictly a matter of the settings you use in Lightwave. Hardware changes only affect how long these renders take.

Hi guys,

I have a Athlon 64x 4400, 2GB RAM, 800GB HDD. Currently I am using  QuadroFx 540, suggest a better card that helps me render better.

Thanks,

Hello!

Our new plug-in CameraMan v1.0 has been released!

CameraMan is LightWave ® Layout tool that allows moving and rotating camera like
in First Person Perspective/Shooter
game - by pressing WSAD for moving forward/backward and strafe left/right, and
arrow keys or mouse for rotating head
left/right and up/down. This tool is more toy alike, but showed us great power
behind it by allowing to make LightWave
driver for Space/3D Navigator http://www.3dconnexion.com controller, even
without NewTek help! To this moment we and
other 3rd party developers thought it is impossible!

Greetings,
At the request of the list owner, I am sending this introduction of
myself to the list. I am an artist and architectural designer with
a large design/build contractor in the north-east USA. We build
industrial and commercial buildings. www.sheridancorp.com In the late
eighties I discarded my drafting tools for CAD. I use DataCAD and
the office also has AutoCAD. Around 2000 I felt the need for color
and talked the company into buying CorelDraw & Paint. Using this
with CAD gave me a much broader range of finished work which lead to
doing the company's advertising using QuarkXPress. That lead to
designing a company web site using Hot Metal Pro, but that program is
no longer, so I am now using Dreamweaver.
All of my experiance to this point has been 2D. I fiddled around
with Sketch-up but found it very limiting. Particularly in regard to
importing objects into the program and developing objects that were
to proper size and scale, but then, I didn't spend a lot of time with
it. A short time ago a client asked me to do an animated fly-through
of the building we were proposing to him as a tool for his building
committee's fund raising. I couldn't do that so we had it done out
of house by a person using Lightwave. I was really impressed with
what he did using the site plan, floor plan and elevations I supplied
him with. When I suggested to my boss that we get Lightwave, it was
not a hard sell. He was enthusiastic, to say the least, but now I am
a little nervous. I went to the Newtek site and watched some of the
video tutorials and its a whole new world this 3D!! I hope I have
enough grey matter to learn it. I have been fairly successful so far
learning programs by just stumbling around and trial and error. I
have never had any formal training with the programs I use now. I
just hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew.
The first thing I asked for (other than the program, of course)
are the books, "Inside Lightwave v9" and "Digital Photography for 3D
Imaging and Animation" by Dan Ablan. You can imagine how surprised I
was to see that Dan is a member of this list! And then I went back
into past list messages and found that all of you folks have a great
deal of knowledge to offer and I feel like I've made a good choice in
Lightwave. I don't have the program yet, but rest assured you will
be hearing from me in the near future. In the mean time I will be
happily lurking.

Hi Ray,

Welcome to the group! I'm also in the Northeast (Boston area)Even
though Lightwave is very powerful, I think you'll be able to learn it
easily, especially with all of the knowlege you aleady have, and the
availability of this great on-line community and also all of the
affordable training materials out there.
Once you get lightwave installed make sure you download the free
plugin lwcad. on the Newtek registration page it says that the offer
expires in june 2007, but I think you can still get it. It's LWCAD
version 1.5 and it will make your life so much easier when creating
architectural scenes. The Commercial version, 2.5 is even better and
well worth the upgrade costs. I don't work for wtools 3d. I'm just
an animator that's used lightwave and other packages long enough to
know that the standard lightwave toolset is lacking tools for
architects, and lwcad fills that void nicely. Good Luck and have fun
with Lightwave!

Ray,
It may make you feel less anxious to hear from a once very nervous
lightwave novice. I learned lightwave, then 5.6, on the job-with no
experience. The producer sat me down on the first day of work saying
"here's your shots, sit right here, if you have any questions ask
these guys" pointing to six seasoned animators. I was petrified. I was
hired because animation was booming, and there was a place for a
photographer who "had an eye". I went 2d to 3d in a second and have
never looked back. As has been said before, the community is available
and generous to their animator brothers and sisters.

Hi. I have a milling machine that will accept .dxf files from
Lightwave Modeler so that I can carve 3D models from my Modeler
designs. But the .dxf files always show up as rough wireframes after
you export them from Modeler. For example, a perfectly round smooth
sifted sphere in Modeler will appear as a bumpy wireframe ball (smooth
shift properties lost) when exported as .dxf. Do you think I am doing
something wrong? I mean, I don't want to end up milling a bumpy ball!

Thanks,
Dan

Try after subdividing, then going in and freezing... freezing your polys before moving them out of modeller might keep the smoothness.. probably still some jaggies, but maybe not if you subdivide high enough first.
