Anthony,

I too experienced the 'network error' in the channel store on 2 different units in 2 different locations.
I had to reboot the units after a channel was added and it would work until I added another channel.
Since then support has issued an update.  Go into the Settings and select the option to check for system updates.
I believe the latest firmware is v2.9.1553.  Since updating the firmware, I have not experienced the issue.

Thanks and hope this helps.
Keith

Is anyone else having problems getting to the channel store? I've tried going there and it keeps telling me that the Channel Store is experiencing a network connection and to go to the Roku settings to fix it. I honestly don't know what to be looking for in those settings. I went there and all the settings are correct for logging into my wireless network. I even tried connecting through an Ethernet cable and it's still tilling me that there's an error. Anyone have any ideas?

I always use Handbrake to convert my avi files to MP4. I have never had any
problems with the conversions or playing the converted MP4 files with a flash
drive on Roku.

Later tonight I will sit down with Handbrake and copy down my setting and write a little tutorial to help everyone out with the USB channel.

Handbrake has been flawless for me, what's the issue with it and novice users?
I showed my gf where to click and presto she is ripping movies in no time.

I don't think Roku should waste their time/resources on building an app when
there are tons out there, and Handbrake does a perfect job for free.

Whilst I've not tested Roku's USB channel I do use my USB SATA hard drive to
source movies ripped to MP4 files with VLC played from my Insignia Blu-Ray disk
player. I would expect the Roku to be very similar.

As I said I use VLC, which generally has crappy user support on their forum but
persistance payed off and over time I figured out the VLC settings needed to RIP
DVDs to high quality MP4 files. I tried Hand Brake and found the software more
irritating than VLC to use and the support even worse.

How are your USB devices formatted? NTFS or Fat32. Most thumb drives are
formatted Fat32 and I'm guessing that's what you need to make a USB hard drive
work.

Sorry for the ramble but perhaps this will help.

First thing I would do is power cycle the Roku.
Next check to see if the router is seeing the Roku.
If need be power cycle the modem and router; this is your modem and router are 2
separate things, power off both then power on the modem and wait until it's full
ready then power on the router. If they are 1 in the same, the obviously you'll
just power cycling 1 thing.
Also wait about 3-5mins before plugging the modem back in, this is what most
cable ISP's tech support will tell you to do.

I have a Samsung LCD TV that I can stream pictures, video and audio files from
my PC. I also have a Samsung blu-ray HTS that can stream local media like the TV
but also connects to the internet for Netflix, Vudu and some others...none of
which I have account with.
I got the Roku mostly because I wanted to watch video podcast from TWiT and
Revision3 but now because I have Amazon Prime I get their free movies as well.
I've thought about getting a WD TV Live Hub so can more easily stream my media
and I can just dump it to it's drive.
I've played with the Boxee software on my laptop and it's ok. I never tried
streaming it to the TV though.

I still have cable and a DVR so I used that for the local stuff and still end up
flipping channels on there when I'm bored and looking for something to watch. I
do try to switch to the Roku when doing that but it's harder to find something
to watch.

i've had the same problem -- i think this is common. only solution that works
every time for me is to re-start the Roku box by unplugging the power cord and

My Roku box tends to reload, once or twice, when I am watching a HD movie on
Netflix. I do not have that problem when I watch HD on Amazon thru the Roku,
and I donot have a reloading problem when I watch Netflix thru my Blu Ray

I use DSL and have a pretty constant 9Mbps (as indicated on SpeakEasy speed

I am not sure what everyone else is doing, but I installed Handbrake and didn't
touch any settings (just made sure it was set on MP4 under container not MKV)
just hit source, waited until it was done and then hit start. It made a movie
from my DVD that I then put on a thumb drive and it plays perfectly in my Roku.
I had tried an AVI and that didn't play so I tried Handbrake. I also see people
stating that it won't use a larger than 4gb drive. Mine is a 16GB drive and I
used a USB powered 500GB drive and they both worked fine.
If my player didn't I would be returning for another.

I purchased PlayOn server, it was a good addition to Roku, and worked with our
Xbox 360 and Windows Media Center (and later Boxee). PlayOn also works with PS3,
iPhones, iPads and anything that plays nice with a uPnP media server.

I purchased a Silicondust HDHomeRun box because it was the best tuner for a
Windows Media Center setup, and being LAN based worked with more than 1 PC
(versus a tuner card *in* a PC). This added local digital TV broadcasts (with an
antenna of course).

I installed Boxee (free) on my HTPC, primarily to check-out Vudu, but video
selection and pricing of Vudu content are close/identical to Amazon VOD.
However, 720p/1080p video is not yet supported on Boxee software, just the Boxee
hardware (lame) for now.

The only thing I'm missing, is content being held hostage (like Discovery
Networks does) while this CableTV-less world continues to get sorted-out.

Hello everyone,
I have a roku hooked up to my plasma tv with an HDMI cable. I'm thinking of
buying another roku for my non HDMI TV, but thought I'd test it out before
buying.

Since there are no HDMI connections on my other TV, I used the regular
video/audio cables (red/yellow/white) to attach the roku to my tv. The video
was horrible.

Has anybody else hooked their roku up to a tv without HDMI? Wondering if it's
the brand of cables I'm using, or video is poor without HDMI, or what. Not
impressed with the clarity so far... if I can't find a solution, I guess I'll
regrettablly only have one roku on my main tv. :(

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have!
Anybody??

Quite a few people are having problems with video encoding for the USB Media Browser channel. I use Handbrake for all of my encoding and my source files come from DVD and Blu-ray disc. I don't know if these settings will work if you are looking to re-encode avi's or wmv files.

I'm using Handbrake 0.9.5 with AnyDVD HD for allof my encodes. AnyDVD HD will rip the video to your hard drive so that it is usable with Handbrake. This method is also much faster than trying to encode video directly from your optical drive
In handbrake I use the following settings for both DVD and Blu-ray video.

I start with the High Profile preset and set my container to MP4 and check the Large file size box if it's a blu-ray encode. I set my tabs to the following.

Picture Tab
Size - Check the Keep Aspect Ratio box. This will automaticlly set the width and height of your video to the correct dimensions for your TV screen.
Anamorphic - None.
Cropping - Automatic.

Video Filters Tab
Detelecine - Off
Decomb - Default. This will add a little bit of time to your encode, but it will keep your video looking normal.
Deinterlace - Off
Denoise - Off
Deblock - Off
Grayscale Encoding - I leave it unchecked, but it could be useful if you are encoding a black and white film.

Video Tab
Video Codec - H.264 (x264)
Framerate (FPS) - Same as source
Quality - Use Constant Quality. I use RF:17 for DVD and RF:19.75 for Blu-ray. My settimgs are a bit high for some people, but they retain picture quality. My Blu-ray setting keeps movies under 8.5 gigs and allows me to back them up on a dual layer dvd. You can play with the RF slider to find your own prefrence. Moving the slider to the left will give you a smaller file size, but it will degrade video quality. Moving to the right will increase file size but also retain more video quality.

Audio Tab
I have to use two audio tracks on video encodes. I do one digital passthru and one ACC analog. If I don't do this, my videos will not play on the roku with the Official USB Media Browser. The old private channel never had this issue.

Source - I always use the digital track (Dolby 5.1, Dolby 2.0 or DTS)
Audio Codec -  1st track: AC3 Passthru. 2nd track: AAC (faac)
Mixdown - 1st track: auto selected. 2nd track: Dolby Prologic II or Stereo. Your choice really, but I would stay away from 6 channel discrete.
Samplerate - 1st track: auto selected. 2nd track: Auto
Bitrate - 1st track: auto selected. 2nd track: 128 or 160.
DRC - 0.0

Subtitles Tab
I'm not sure if the Roku will ever support embedded subs, but I add them on my DVD videos. Add whatever you like. I leave the 3 check boxes unchecked.

Chapters Tab
Hopefully the Roku will support chapters in the future. I include them on every video encode I do. Check the Create chapter markers box.

Advanced Tab
I leave it all alone, except I put Adaptive Direct Mode to Automatic. Your code string at the bottom should look like this: b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=50:direct=auto

Set the video name to your liking and start encoding.

The speed of this process depends on your PC. I used an old pentium 4 PC for awhile and DVD's would take 6 to 8 hours to encode. Blu-ray was not a possibility. I built a new PC with a quadcore and now DVD's take 45 minutes while my blu-ray encodes take 6 hours.

I can confirm that Handbrake works when using Roxbox’s settings to encode AVI to Mp4 to work in the USB Media Browser channel – works perfectly.

As an alternative, install Playon and use their local file plugin and it will read the .avi format with no problem.  No conversation or USB drive is necessary and it reads it right from your computer,  Mine is wireless and I have no problem.

There was an update I got yesterday for the USB Channel. Finally, I hoped it would solve many of the playability issues that myself and several others are having with MP4 and MKV video files. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any changes for me. There is considerable frustration on the Roku support forums as well. Using Handbrake is not a user-friendly solution for the novice. Several requests have been made for EXACTLY what settings need to be in place when transcoding files into MP4. Requests for a Roku application to transcode have heard only crickets chirping.

I expected that when it finally became an official channel (from private for so long), that there would have been improvements. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. Now with this update, there is NO information that I can find detailing what was updated and/or changed. All I want to do is play regular MP4s and MKVs (I've given up on any AVI support). No dumbing down the frame rates or audio channels, PLEASE.

I've even tried a few other applications (Any Video Converter, Convert AVI to MP4), but no success or very limited at best (audio synch issues). Whoever has had consistent success in transcoding video files that work 100% for the USB Channel, would they please help enlighten us as to what "magic" you're using?

I have, and it was just fine. Make sure you have set the Display Type (in
Settings) to 4:3 Standard.

That is all I have :)  Even my older HD TV is connected with RCA cables and the picture quality is just fine.  I'd try other cables or at least switch out the yellow cable (Video).  You can even just use the red or white cable to test with.  If the video quality is better then you have a bad cable.  If it is the same you either have 3 bad cables, or a bad Roku box (the video output via RCA is a different section of the box than the HDMI, which is digital) or possibly a setting issue.  Like it is setup to output HD Composite and you should have it set for Standard composite.

I have a roku hooked up to my plasma tv with an HDMI cable. I'm thinking of buying another roku for my non HDMI TV, but thought I'd test it out before buying.

Since there are no HDMI connections on my other TV, I used the regular video/audio cables (red/yellow/white) to attach the roku to my tv. The video was horrible.

I posted a better version of my settings on the Roku forum board. Here is the link: http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=36754&start=105#p256531

I hope this helps everybody who needs it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am not sure what everyone else is doing, but I installed Handbrake and didn't touch any settings (just made sure it was set on MP4 under container not MKV) just hit source, waited until it was done and then hit start. It made a movie from my DVD that I then put on a thumb drive and it plays perfectly in my Roku. I had tried an AVI and that didn't play so I tried Handbrake. I also see people stating that it won't use a larger than 4gb drive. Mine is a 16GB drive and I used a USB powered 500GB drive and they both worked fine.
If my player didn't I would be returning for another.

Has anyone used their Roku with AT&T MiFi mobile hotspot or similar
device/service? If so, was the bandwidth an issue? We are moving from a
high-speed internet area to a more rural location where AT&T wireless is
probably our only option for high speed.

Thanks in advance!

Until about two years ago, I had an old TV that I hooked up using the composite connections (video 480i, left, right), and the picture was pretty good.

That TV would not take the component cables (three connections for video, two more for audio) because the component video coming out of the Roku was 480p (Roku configured for standard video display) but my TV didn't understand 480p component, but it did handle 480i just fine from my DVD player of the same vintage.

Did you go through the Settings on the Roku and set the display type to 4:3 standard (assuming that is what you are trying to hook it up to)? Are you sure you are using the same type of connection on both the Roku and TV? (Typically the composite input on the TV is labeled "A/V" with L R V labeled RCA connectors.) If you are seeing a picture without any color, assuming that it isn't a B&W movie, you might have mismatched component on the Roku with composite on the TV.

What model of the Roku do you have, what inputs do you have on the TV, how are you connecting them, and can you tell us what you mean by "video is pretty poor without HDMI"? Is the video splotchy, or is it distorted or without color (when you are expecting color)? Do the Roku menus look ok?

I bought a Samsung BD-6500 blu-ray player after buying my 3rd Roku box.
Bought it because I wanted to see my Netflix discs in hi-def. The
Samsung has Netflix capability, but the Roku's picture is
better--cleaner and fits the format of my widescreen LG.

You will see jerkiness.  I use a Sprint MiFi on my iPad and Netflix while traveling for work and it's barely acceptable.  Tethering my Verizon (work Android phone) and my T-Mobile (personal 4G phone) to the iPad and other devices doesn't help much either.

I bought my Roku a few weeks ago, apparently I added too many channels, and Hulu
stopped showing up. After I deleted some channels, the next time I went to the
home screen, only the settings icon showed up. I have unplugged the box, and
also hit the reset button on the bottom. Anything else I can do, before I
exchange at store?

I had AT&T and had to cancel due to bandwidth overutilization “over 5 GB”.  I switched to a local provider for an unlimited data card. I needed an external roof mount antenna with 30’ of cable and 2 USB extension wires then into a broadband router. In my area I get 800 to 1200k down and 100 to 200 up with a public IP address on the data card. The Netflix works but I have problems with other channels.
