Is there a way to get 1.FM music channels on Roku? If not, I'm surprised since
there are so many other music options. I just haven't found out how to do 1.FM
yet.

Hi Daryll--If you have PlayOn.tv, you can get a private channel with 200 or so live channels and we've watched tnt with it. Here's the link: http://www.playonscripts.com/?w=view&id=304

Hi.

Although the NokNok channel works only partially, the last time I played with it the Live Feed of HGTV was working there.  I don’t really watch the channel or use NokNok much but if the Live stream of HGTV works then you don’t have to spend money on PlayOn just for HGTV.  You may also find HGTV podcast content and RateRix (YouTube Alternative) channel.  Good luck.

I was having those issues with it not playing after about 20 min. and I had
to update my software. Try updating the Playon software and see if that
fixes it?

My wife used to watch a lot of HGTV before the Roku channel was cut off.
Now she uses my Android tablet to watch it from their web site, and I'd
like to reclaim my tablet. :)

So, is there any way to play HGTV on the Roku now, besides PlayOn? We
tried PlayOn, but she says that the videos stop playing after the ads
come on. Have others had trouble watching it through PlayOn?

If it worked reliably, I might even buy a lifetime subscription to
PlayOn, although HGTV appears to be the only thing we'd watch on it.
Which is why I'm wondering if that's currently the only way to watch it
through Roku?

Thanks,
Trevor

Hi.

At one point HGTV, Food Network, TV.COM and the official YouTube channel were available but the content providers made Roku remove the channels.  As an alternative for watching basic Cable channels, you can try:

1.     US TV Now free account.  Just follow the step-by-step setup instructions on catastrophegirls roku channel site.  These will give you live local channels for free.

2.     The NokNok channel has a working live feed of HGTV (At least last time I played with it).  Most other content doesn’t work but some of the channel plugins (ABC works fine and the others partially or none at all).

3.     MummyBox has live feeds of Disney Channel, Discovery, Discovery Turbo, Discovery Science and Cartoon Network

4.     Plex has lots of mainstream content but also has Hulu Basic so that should give you access to many TV series (You do need a dedicated PC/Server to transcode)

5.     Justin.TV sometimes have active live feeds of programs like CSI, Walking Dead, Simpsons, etc. but don’t always transmit

6.     Finally you have RateRix, Metatube and Vimeo as a working alternative to the missing official YouTube channel.

There is plenty of content for free if you do the research and understand that “you get what you pay for” meaning “free” is limited, buggy, isn’t always available like live feeds.

However, $16 a month for Hulu Plus and Netflix on top of all the free content is a great deal for “Cable Cutters”.

Good luck.

I recently purchased a Roku XS which has a USB port.

I am converting all of my DVDs to MP4 files and storing them on a
Western Digital Passport Essential SE 750 GB hard drive ($70 including
shipping). This drive is very small and does not require a separate
power cord...it gets power from the Roku USB port.

The Roku is very 'picky' about the file format and apparently all MP4
files are not 'created equal'.

I tried a few different programs and different settings and wanted to
share what works perfectly with simplicity.

Be sure to make sure the Bristish flag is showing after clicking 'DVD'
(if you want English audio) and subtitles on or off (if you add
subtitles they are embedded in the file and cannot be turned off when
playing the movie). Some DVDs have both the 4:3 and 16:9 formats on the
same disk; deselect the one you don't want.

I used Apple/Ipad3 and only changed one setting (framerate = 29.97) and
saved this custom profile as "ROKU"

You can add a cover file if desired for each DVD by searching on Amazon
or IMDB, right click on the DVD cover and click 'save image as'. The
image must be saved with the same title as the movie (i.e. Bambi.jpg)
and in the same folder as the movie.

I saw a note that another Roku owner used DVDShrink (
http://dvdshrink.org/ ) rather than AnyDVD but I have not tried this as
I already owned AnyDVD. DVDShrink is free but would add time to each
conversion. It takes about 30 minutes per DVD to convert on my laptop.

Soon I will have all of my DVDs on a small HD attached to the Roku and
will store all of the original DVDs away. I have created a MOVIE folder
and two sub folders, ADULTS and CHILDREN. The Roku USB Media Player
Channel plays movies, MP3s and JPG files.

I have managed to email to myplex YouTube vids as well as have it see home vids
from my computer in a file and was able to play them on the Roku. I can't seem
to get the Plex it button to work on chrome - so have been emailing it. I have
both the bookmark bar and add-on. They both stall or I am impatient. I have
emailed a CBS clip and it is still looking for a server, so I am at a loss with
that part of it when YouTube works. I would like to use it to the fullest if I
can.

Any extra help would be great. For now I email YT vids and it satisfies the
kiddos.
Thanks!

The free, private, What's On channel displays movie theater listings, showtimes and trailers as well as TV listings for your US zip code or Canadian post code.

TV listings are displayed on a grid, which contains a user-configurable number of rows.
The font size varies with the number of rows, so you can choose between having a more readable display or more TV channels shown.

To navigate through the TV listings:
- Left and Right Keys (<) and (>) move through programs in 30 minute intervals
- Fast-Forward and Rewind Keys (<<) and (>>) move through programs in 60 minute intervals
- Up and Down Keys (^) and (v) move up and down through channels
- Select Key (OK) exits the TV listings screen

Movie Listings are displayed for a number of movie theaters located near your zip code.
Select a theater to see a list of movies and showtimes.
Select a movie to get movie details, showtimes and trailers.
Use the forward and back buttons (">" and "<") to navigate through the movie list.

Often I find myself wondering if a movie is available "streaming". Sure, you
can get almost any movie on Amazon (at retail price), but I'd like to know if
anyone knows how to figure out which movies are streaming on which selected
channels and when.

Netflix adds and removes movies regularly and then we'll see them "pop up" on
Crackle....then go back to Netflix again.

With all the various streaming channels available, it would be nice to know
which channels I can choose. Some channels have better quality, other don't
have commercials, some are free, etc...

Is there some sort of service out there that tracks this sort of stuff?

Thanks!

Hi All, I have a question and I hope someone can help me..
I have access to wi-fi through tengointernet as the provider and is included in
my rent but I cannot figure out how to connect the Roku?
The main login is open access but then it redirects to a login screen that
needs a user name and password. When I set the Roku to the user name and
password it does not connect because the user name is not the network name that
shows up on a network scan and thus the password is not for the network either
because the network is open but only to redirect, enter a user name and password
and then go to the network that does not show up on a scan but provides internet
access.
Maybe someone understands and can help?

I appreciate any feedback that can help me use my Roku!

Harry,

I think you'll have to use your PC to feed internet to your Roku after
you login to tengointernet.

Hopefully your Roku has an ethernet port. If you set up your PC to
share your internet connection via Windows "Internet Connection Sharing"
and specify wifi as your internet source and ethernet as your personal
network then connect your Roku to your PC using a "crossed" or "null
modem" ethernet cable your PC will feed internet to your Roku.

If your Roku doesn't have an ethernet port or isn't physically close to
your PC it's possible to also add a second wifi card to your PC and feed
your Roku via wifi (you could also add an access point to your ethernet
port). If you use this method make sure you enable WEP or WAP security
or you could end up feeding internet to all your neighbors!

Several years ago I subscribed to tengointernet while wintering at a RV
park in Harlingen, TX - horrible service - I hope your tengointernet
service is much better than I had or you'll never get enough bandwidth
to stream video!

Ken

Hi Todd-

I tried Handbrake when I first got the Roku...but it seemed everyone had their own 'settings'...I tried a couple but it didn't work for me.  It has LOTS of places to change the settings.

Thus far, I am very happy with Freemake.  It is so simple and has a really nice, professional interface.

So far each movie is averaging 1.73 GB, which is about 1GB/hour, like you are getting with Handbrake.

Can Handbrake convert protected DVDs or is another program required?

Thanks for your offer to share your Handbrake settings...but Freemake is working well for me, and it is fast (I think about 30-40 minutes per movie).

same disk; deselect the one you don't want.

Actually, Playon has been my savior. As of a few months ago, Roku updated
their software to stream faster (without getting real technical). Now Playon
streams flawlessly most of the time. You get a full Youtube channel that works
great (even though raterix works good as a Youtube channel). They also have
TVlinks to watch Cable series shows and movies at the theater and DVD, Hulu
standard for a much broader range of movies (cancelled my Hulu plus) and much
much more. The cost is $79 for lifetime. Can't beat it.

Stacey-
I cut the cable and started streaming about eight months ago and wondered the same thing that you have - is there a better device?  The short answer is that there are more similarities between devices than differences and the differences are what will make one device better for you than another.  The similarities make them all good choices.  I am streaming using three different devices - (in the order that they were purchased - a Roku 2 XS, a Sony S580 bluray player, a second Roku 2 XS (which was virtually free with a PlayOn lifetime purchase) and just two weeks, a Logitech ReVue with Google TV.  We are subscribed to Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and Netflix, all of which we first had one months free preview.  I am going to drop Hulu Plus because we like Netflix better and there is a lot of duplication between the two.

My wife likes the Sony the best because it has the fewest amount of "channels" so she doesn't have to search through a lot of channels to watch something.  The remote for the Sony works on Netflix as if she were watching a DVD, so it is very easy to use.  I like the Roku because of the variety of channels and like to watch small snipets, such as videos like failblog.  The 2 XS is great because of the bluetooth remote and sometimes I play Angry Birds.  The things that I like about the ReVue is that it comes with a full size keyboard and I intregrated a DVD recorder with an HDTV tuner into it and the remote control keyboard controls the TV, strereo system, DVD player and ReVue.  The problem with the ReVue is that there are very few channels and Logitech is not longer making the ReVue and thus there is little support and probably will not be any software updates.  Google TV offers few channels and it has a lot of apps similar to those for a smart phone, but I don't need to use my TV to play an app of 12 different belch sounds, so most of the apps are worthless.

The bottom line is that if I could only choose one device it would be the Roku because it offers the most variety and the remote is simple to use because there are so few buttons on it.  Keep checking for channels. both public and private, and you will be amazed at the content, mostly free, that is available via a Roku box.  We are much, much happier with our streaming devices than we ever were with cable and, after paying for the devices and disconnecting our home phone (now using MagicJack, which is better than land line anyway), we are saving about $70 a month and we are getting more variety and getting it on demand than cable could ever even begin to offer.  My wife and I joke that we have to quit our jobs because we now have so many entertainment options through our TVs that we don't have time to go to work anymore.  If sports were to ever become more widely available on Roku and other devices I would think that cable and satellite are doomed.  Most people do not own a Roku or smart TV or DVD player and have no idea what they are missing channel surfing their cable looking for somethind decent to watch.

Good luck.

There are 2 ways now. One is Nowhere TV, there are now 4 or 5 british channels
on there. the other is through Playon and then getting an add on called
supervox. If you choose the Playon option you must then get a VPN. The one I
have costs $5 a month. Total for the playon version is $30 for playon for 1
year(or they have a lifetime license but I'm not sure what it costs) $5 for
Supervox and $5 per month for the VPN. The VPN I use is Hideipvpn. Its very
dependable. Supervox has a page that tells you which channels are working and
which are having problems. Mostly I've found they all work. So far I like this
option best.

Amazon is the cheapest and always has .99 or $1.99 sales. Netflix has very little that is recent. You can find all IFC fims there and Epix movies. Thor will premiere in a week. I just use Amazon for new releases or Redbox.

Netflix adds and removes movies regularly and then we'll see them "pop up" on Crackle....then go back to Netflix again.

With all the various streaming channels available, it would be nice to know which channels I can choose. Some channels have better quality, other don't have commercials, some are free, etc...

Is there some sort of service out there that tracks this sort of stuff?

Thanks!

The combination of the Roku box with Playon gives us access to just about everything we want to watch. CBS shows are tough to watch through the CBS application on Playon but we have had good luck accessing CBS shows through TV.com on Playon. TV.com on Roku without going through Playon does not have the same CBS shows.

If you have a PC available that can handle the Playon application, I believe you'll really enjoy the combination of Roku with Playon.

There's a channel I just installed a few days ago called Mummy Box; I think it has several British channel feeds.  Lots of other great stuff there too.

Re: I use both my Roku and Google TV box. Both are the 2 best solutions out
there. Frankly, I like them both the same. Individually, they have limitations
that one has over the other.

Don't recommend other setup boxes unless all you want to do is watch
netflix/hulu plus. Google TV and Roku are the best for "Cable Cord Cutters"

1. Google TV Pro's

a. Web Browser Based- You can find a website that offers free TV or movies
that is compatible and works, just add to favorites, create a link from your
main control page and you now have a channel.

b. You can add special Apps from Google Play made exclusively for Google TV or
you can use "hacks"/work-arounds to install other Android apps on your Google TV
that may not be compatible with Google TV. Google TV runs on Android OS so you
have the Android market available to you. The Logitech Revues are currently
updated to Android 3.1 and the Sony Blu Ray's with Google TV have version 3.2

c. Optimized for GoogleTV Official YouTube Channel. Just type in search:
"full episodes of (your favorite TV shows)" and you will most likely find
uploaded episode to watch.

d. Google TV has a better JustIn TV and better YouTube channel than Roku.

2. Google TV Con's

a. No Hulu Plus app. You are limited to only Netflix and Crackle for
mainstream content.

b. On the Revue 3.1 Android you can only use the PLEX channel to stream local
media. The "channels" options/plugins don't work on Android 3.1. Works OK on
Sony's with Android 3.2

Roku Pros:

a. CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT. Every week they release 2 to 3 working Public
Channels and many new Private channels show up as new channels if you do some
internet searching/research and look for them. So there is always new content
to add to your Roku box. Most of the times they can be "crappy" channels but
every once-in-a-while you get surprised with good stuff.

b. You have full Hulu Plus, Netfix and Crackle for on demand stuff.

c. You have RateRix as a working alternative for the missing YouTube Channel.

d. Plex is much better on Roku than on Google TV with the custon
channels/plugins working ok.

e. USTVNOW channel allows you to watch mainstream basic local channels (ABC,
NBC, CBS, CW, Fox, PBS, My9) for free. But you need to be behind a proxy to
setup. It won't let you configure/setup with US IP Addresses. Catastophegirls
Roku Site has step-by-step instructions on how to configure. Works great if you
qualify for registration and can follow the setup instructions.

This channel is for US Servicemen living abroad. Setting up behind a proxy
fools their system into thinking you are overseas. Luckily, you just need to be
behind a proxy during initial setup. Once configured properly works OK and you
can use normally with your default US IP address scheme.

USTVNOW for ABC, CBS, NBC, CW, Fox, PBS, My 9)

MummyBox for Discovery, NatGeo, Animal Planet, Cartoon Network and other "Cable"
channels. Please note that these "Cable Channels" are Asian and Middle-Eastern
versions but are transmitted in English. There are times when they don't
transmit or are removed by MummyBox if content providers require the removal of
their channels.

JustIn.TV offers live streams of movies and many mainstream TV shows. Many in
English and foreign languages (Mostly Spanish, German and Indian).

Good luck.

Roku Cons:

a. No browser support with flash

b. Limited number of codecs supported

c. You have to wait for other developers to create channels for you. On Google
TV you just need to find a working website, add to favorites and create a
link/shortcut on your main App page and you have your own "custom channel". No
need to be a developer.

Hope this info helps. If you can afford it, get both boxes like I did. All I
pay for TV is $16 for both Netflix and Hulu Plus. These paid plus the tons of
free content available on both platforms no need to pay abusive Cable/Satellite
TV service.

If you live in an area that an over-the-air digital antenna can pick up your
local channels then you don't need to worry about complicated USTVNOW setups.
Unfortunately, I wasn't as lucky with OTA so I needed USTVNOW as an alternative.

Good luck.

When you say 'better box' it leaves the question wide open to interpretation. I have a Roku and Apple TV, plus Sony's latest Blu-Ray player. Each has its own pluses and minuses, but all of them contain the main streaming content I watch most often - Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. All have 1080p capabilities and the interfaces are similar across the board. Performance and quality is about equal. Since I am running wired instead of wireless for these units I do not suffer buffering problems. Apple TV delivers the latest and greatest content as the others and contains a different older backlog than the others, meaning there are shows and movies the others do not offer, but then again the same can be said for Netflix and Amazon. I've noticed my Sony Blu-Ray offers streaming content from VuDu, Sony Entertainment and a few other areas Roku and Apple TV does not. Again, it depends on what you want in terms of streaming. In short, if you just own a Roku, you can't go wrong, as it offers channels that will more than satisfy your viewing pleasures. If you decide to add the others, such as Apple TV or a Blu-Ray that offers other channels or outlets, you will have some that are duplicates, but on the plus side, if one unit goes down, you still have a secondary method of watching the same channel. It all boils down to personal choice.

Ditto. I'd be glad to pay the "tv tax" to get bbc. 10000% better than us
