Is anyone using a device with a trackball (probably a windows mobile- or such
with a Palm os emulator)? I am interested to know if it is possible to manuever
about in smartlist with the trackball on a non-touchscreen device (my work is
changing carriers and "making" us use a HTC Snap which does not have a
touchscreen).
Thanks,
Gordon

Hi there,

SLTG v3.501 on palm TX.

I can use the datebook plugin to add a calendar item, but I cannot seem to
remove it once added. Message is "Failed to find appointment to delete". I
thought I might not be using the add correctly, but if I try to add the same
records a second time, I get a message the the appointment already exists.

Does the Remove calendar entry item of the datebook plugin work, or is it me not
using it correctly?

Thanks in advance.
Bob

I checked Dataviz support for this problem and there is a patch for it.

document id: 14298, 2/16/09
http://support.dataviz.com/support.srch?docid=14298&pid=195

is the relevant document. My SmartListToGo version is now 3.501 (371). I
verified that it works.

I revise this to state that I can not enter a minus sign in order to input a
negative number for floating point, integer or long integer fields. I can set a
negative number as a default value and such a default value will be entered in
the field. Upon editing such a record, the minus sign is present in the form
field used for editing. However, if the minus sign is removed by deletion or by
a Cut operation, it cannot be reinserted.

My version of SmartListToGo is 3.501 (370); my PDA is a Palm Tungsten E2 running
Palm OS Garnet v.5.4.7.

A "warm" reset does not affect this behaviour. Nor does deleting other
applications that I thought might possibly be interfering.

I've just reinstalled SmartListToGo on a Palm Zire 31 that I've been keeping on
life support (keeping its battery charged). It has Palm OS software v.5.2.8.
The inability to enter numbers with a leading minus sign is the same there as
well. I'm mystified.

The workaround--if negative numbers are necessary--is to have a negative number
as a default value and then edit the number, but keep its leading minus sign.

The inability to enter a leading minus sign is true for floating point, integer
and long integer fields.

Hmmm, that's strange I just entered -123.45 on my Palm Centro (Garnet

unreleased version of the OS?

Okay, I agree that the floating point field can represent negative numbers.
However, there is a But still. I can't enter them. A minus sign isn't
accepted. However, I can put a negative number as a default and it shows up
with its minus sign. I'm using a Palm Tungsten E2 running Palm OS Garnet

I am new to this list, bought Smartlist so that I could do databases on my
TREO.

Professionally I do MS Access database development. Also database scrubs &
conversions. Other software lists I belong to are database related - to
pedigrees/genealogy. DB conversion (or in this case an extraction) is a
simple matter for someone that already owns the database software in
question OR MS Access w/ appropriate ODBC drivers.

Before I suggest asking someone else for assistance, might I suggest
downloading a trial version of Smartlist & attempting extraction on your
own?

While I am writing, I have tried GOOGLE with minimal success other than an
old Kentucky Derby Winner Smartlist/pedigree generator. Before I start
playing, has anyone already designed something pedigree (tree) related for
Smartlist?

TIA! Kris

Does anyone have a means/method of converting a SmartList file to CSV?

StyleTap is a sort of Palm OS-shield for Windows Mobile. Like Classic from
MotionApps is for the Palm Pre. With such a program, you can use Palm-apps.
But I think, you can't sync the programs with a pc... (at the moment.)

There is a Linear Bar Code Scanner for the Palm Treo and later with the
older Palm OS through Made-In-China.com. It should be available until
mid-November.

If all else fails, run a Google search for a bar code scanner using Palm OS
... you will get a large number of hits that look promising.

I used SmartList extensively about 3-5 years ago and loved it. I've had a couple
of reasons for starting use of another DB program for handhelds but have been
forced to use Windows CE units. I now have another project that I don't have
handheld restrictions for and would like to resume use of SmartList. Since I've
been out of the Palm handhelds for a while, I'm looking for device
recommendations. I need a barcode scanner with the device. Any opinions? Thanks

yes, make it work they way you want it to work, whatever that might be
today. and, change it if and when you feel like

a lot of OS/2 developers were really way ahead in their thinking and
anticipation of how to make things customizable, easier, etc, etc

like Innoval's PostRoadMailer where, if you desire, you can edit on the
fly predefined mailid/pass/host; how easy is that to troubleshoot some
email issues for any user; or their command line 'hacksaw' tool

or Keller's PMfax, still use it, with CopyShop, PMfax come on 2 floppies,
yet includes everything including voice support, and, the voice stuff is
in REXX, don't like they way it works, change it yourself

and, to backup or clone or image a system, just XCOPY or InfoZIP it, no
need for complicated third party apps

you can XCOPY or ZIP a running system with puurfect result, how easy is that

luckily for me, I have all native, all multi threaded apps for just about
anything I need, and, including, pilot-link/2 suite of tools (Yuri, thanks
so much for adding USB support to pilot-link/2)

I have Core2 with 4 GB RAM and XP, and P2 350 with 765MB RAM and Warp 4;
no prizes for guessing which one can do more in less time

still prefer using it, after all these years
it's logic, not magic

One feature of OS/2 I really liked, and what I respected IBM for, is that the
developers had the attitude that you should be able to make your PC and its s/w
work the way you wanted it to. MS has always had the attitude, "We know better
than you do the best way for YOU to use YOUR computer." That may be true most
average users, but at least with OS/2 if you were more knowledgeable than the
average user you had the freedom to make your own choices.

Another feature of OS/2 that far outshines MS approach in Windows is the storage
of detailed program operating information. Windows puts everything into on gawd
awful bloated registry file that contains all the vital, and useless, and
constantly changing, info every program on the machine uses to run. In OS/2
every program had its own INI file. You could even run different versions of
library files for different programs and thus maintain stability and
compatibility. Plus, it was easy to use a utility to reinstall a program after
upgrading or reloading the OS because all the specific data was in its own INI
file. None of this crap about being forced to reinstall every program when you
install a new version of the OS.

I long for the good old days of OS/2, but alas, I had to leave it behind because
programs I needed for my life weren't available, or if available weren't being
upgraded, for OS/2. And I just don't have the ambition to transition to Linux
and the willingness to trust the Windows emulator in Linux for Windows only
programs.

Try to look for Garnet VM for Itouch. It emulates the PALM OS, so you can go
ahead and install Smartlist To Go without any problems.

Dataviz updated SLTG recently. (Not that it was a big way forward, but they
   did.)
But the Palm OS-market will shrink, now Palm has stopped making new devices
   for it.
Besides of that, there's no Windows-version of SLTG. Hopefully they will
make a Palm Pre-version. Because it's the best database-program for handheld
   devices you can find.

   Cry???!!!

The lack of SLTG being updated for Palm OS and being ported to other
platforms makes me wonder if we're the victims of M$ tactics. Years ago,
OS/2 was starting to make real inroads against Windows, so MS walked away
from its partnership with IBM and began a full court press to squash OS/2.
WordPerfect, (remember it? At the time a much better WP program than Word.)
was literally days away from being released in the final production release
of an OS/2 version. MS told WordPerfect Corp., "That's OK, but realize if
you release the OS/2 version you will no longer get development support from
MS for the Windows version." As you may know, Windows had so many hidden
APIs and other non-visible features that any developer would need MS support
to ensure their program would run decently on Windows. WordPerfect put the
OS/2 version on the shelf and it never saw the light of day. Tactics like
that finally caused OS/2 to have such a small market share that IBM dropped
   development of it.

I'd be willing to bet that getting any program to run decently on Windows
Mobile is such a tortuous process that no one can do it without MS support.
Threaten to withhold that support and MS can probably scare any developer
into abandoning all other platforms, even if there is a reasonable market
demand for it. DataViz's other PDA programs are strongly tied to MS
   products, right?

BTW, if you happen to not know what OS/2 is, consider yourself an example of
   the success of MS tactics!!!!

Try to look for Garnet VM for Itouch. It emulates the PALM OS, so you can go
ahead and install Smartlist To Go without any problems.

I tried HandDBase which is relational but it doesn't seem to have the "DB
Lookup" and "DB Join" that I need.

I used SmartList To Go on my Treo and hoped there was a version for I-Touch. I
tried HandDBase which is relational but it doesn't seem to have the "DB Lookup"
and "DB Join" that I need.

I want to be able to be in one database and choose a piece of data from another
database.

Any suggestions?

Rick
