Dear Professor,

 

The 6th International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology (i-CREATe) will be held from 26 – 28 July 2012 in Singapore which comprises of conference, workshops, exhibition and student design challenge.

Student Design Challenge 2012 is into the 5th installment. For the year 2012, there will be two categories for the challenge.

  • Inclusive Design
  • Inclusive Technology

 

The Student Design Challenge (SDC) encourage students to be creative, innovative in their design and systematic application of technologies and engineering methodologies to meet the needs of elderly and people with special needs to  help them to  improve their quality of life in areas which include education, rehabilitation, employment, transportation, independent living, recreation and etc.

The theme for Student Design Challenge 2012 will be ‘Inclusive Education and Employment’

 

We hope that you can encourage your students to participate in this competition to provide them with the international exposure. Please help to disseminate this information to your colleague and students.

Sustainability Conference 2012
Tuesday, 10 January to Thursday, 12 January 2012

University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
The Eighth International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability aims to develop a holistic view of sustainability, in which environmental, cultural and economic issues are inseparably interlinked. It will work in a multidisciplinary way, across diverse fields and taking varied perspectives in order to address the fundamentals of sustainability.
In addition to Plenary Presentations from leading speakers in the field, the conference will include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers.
The final deadline for submitting a proposal for an in-person presentation at the conference is 24 November 2011. After that date, you are welcome to register as a non-presenting delegate or submit your proposal for a virtual presentation. However, no proposals received after 24 November 2011 will be considered for on-site presentations.

The World Environmental Chronology is designed to be a collective
handbook written in English on the environmental chronology of
individual countries from the industrial revolution to the first decade
of the 21st century. This project aims to publish of high quality
chronology on specific topics in environmental problems and on a broad
range of environmental issues of each country around the world.

The International Editorial Committee for the World Environmental
Chronology, the IECWEC, consists of eight environmental sociologists
from Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. The International Editorial
Committee for the WEC recruits new contributors all over the world who
can undertake the task of collecting information concerning
environmental problems and policies in their own country.

Especially, the IECWEC encourages any young researchers to participate
as prospective authors and contributors in this project.

2. Composition of a World Environmental Chronology is as follows:

Part 1: Integrative history and chronology of environmental problems in
       East Asia
       Four chronologies and four articles which cover China, Korea,
       Taiwan and Japan.
Part 2: General Integrative Environmental Chronology in the World
       General perspectives on the selected environmental issues all
       over the world
Part 3: Specific Chronologies of individual countries in the world
(participants and contributors welcomed!)

About 100 chronologies of individual countries already covered.
Countries covered are increasing, trying to cover most of the countries
of the world.  We announce that we are recruiting contributors for the
new chronology on the countries which have not yet been covered shown in
a following list.

Oceania: Commonwealth of Australia, Federated States of Micronesia,
    Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Kingdom of Tonga, Republic
    of Kiribati, Republic of Nauru, Republic of Palau, Republic of the
    Fiji Islands, Republic of Vanuatu.

Part 4: Specific chronologies of specific topic on environmental problems
       About 20 chronologies on specific environmental topics such as
       climate change, Nuclear energy and mercury pollution etc.

3. Call for Contributors

All person who are interested in actual environmental problems are
encouraged to take part as contributors to write chronologies of the
countries, which have not yet been covered, shown in the following list,
for the completion of "part 3" of the World Environmental Chronology.

General Information
* Language: submissions must be written in English or Japanese
* Two form of participation,
 1. making a chronology of one country
 2. collecting data that will be a part of one chronology
* Length:
 1. when you make a chronology, standard length is from 2500 to 3500
 words in total (varies by the scale of the individual country) for 40
 to 80 items.
 2. when you collect data, you may choose freely its length.
* Deadline of submitting data: The 30th April, 2012
* Format: Microsoft Excel format.
* Style: Contact us (to the secretaries below). The committee will send
 a set of the detailed instructions and sample chronologies.
* All contributors are volunteer based, However, editorial committee is
 ready to offer honorarium for contributors who give us a certain
 amount of data or a chronology in English. Regarding to more detail
 information, please contact us.
* To Students:
 Welcomes applications from any young researcher for this project.

การเสวนา "เทคโนโลยี และนวัตกรรมสีเขียวสู่โอกาสใหม่ของอุตสาหกรรมท้องถิ่น"

ปัจจุบัน “ปัญหาภาวะโลกร้อน” กำลังส่งผลกระทบเป็นวงกว้างทั่วโลก  คำว่า “เพื่อสิ่งแวดล้อม” จึงกลายเป็นคำที่มีการพูดถึงและลงมือทำกันอย่างแพร่หลายในทุกภาคส่วน  ภาคอุตสาหกรรมซึ่งส่งผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมมากที่สุดได้มีการปรับ ตัว และพลิก รูปแบบการผลิตให้คำนึงถึงสิ่งแวดล้อมมากขึ้น การเสวนานี้ จะเป็นการนำเสนอเครื่องมือและเทคโนโลยีด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม รวมทั้งนวัตกรรมสีเขียว เช่น การประเมินวัฏจักรชีวิตของผลิตภัณฑ์เพื่อลดโลกร้อน การคำนวณปริมาณการปลดปล่อยคาร์บอนฟุตพริ้นท์ของผลิตภัณฑ์ บริการ และองค์กร การออกแบบผลิตภัณฑ์ที่เป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม ที่จะช่วยเตรียมความพร้อมของอุตสาหกรรมในท้องถิ่นสู่แนวทางปฏิบัติสีเขียว ซึ่งจะสร้างโอกาสใหม่ให้กับอุตสาหกรรมในท้องถิ่น พร้อมๆ กับการลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมและภาวะโลกร้อนในปัจจุบัน

Dear potential contributor for Electronics Goes Green 2012+

Only two days until the deadline for abstract submissions (15 February 2012!). Please follow the registration procedure to submit one or more abstracts at www.egg2012.de/submissions.

Only abstracts submitted through the electronic system can be processed in the review. The system will send confirmations by email after each change to your submission, so you can be sure we receive your most recent input. You can expect the results of the review by 9 April 2012.

The actual conference registration will follow at a later stage, once the abstracts have been reviewed. See the call for Papers (pdf/444 KB) or the conference website www.egg2012.de for more details.

  • ACCO Adaptation Working Group Meeting: ACCO's Adaptation Working Group recently conducted research on barriers to implementing climate adaptation plans in organizations through a survey of 423 climate practitioners across sectors. The findings from this report highlight challenges and opportunities that climate professionals are facing in the field today. Members of the ACCO Adaptation Working Group will present these findings in a session that will also include a facilitated Q&A session, discussions on opportunities for future activities and suggested next steps for advancing climate adaptation efforts.  Click here for more information.
  • Climate Counts Consumer Education Workshop: Consumer product use often represents the bulk of a companyโ€™s indirect greenhouse (GHG) emissions, but few companies are willing to risk alienating their customer base by discussing a hot-button issue like climate change.  This session will rely on stakeholder participation to flesh out ideas on how companies can effectively manage their message to consumers on climate change, responsible consumption and proper product disposal.  Click here for more information.
  • WRI Post-Conference Workshops: WRI will offer two (2) half-day workshops on the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and Product Life Cycle Standards to introduce participants to the standards; provide the business case for adoption; review the accounting and reporting requirements; and offer practical guidance on implementation.  Click here for more information.
  • World Wildlife Fund Destination Gigaton Briefing: WWF recently conducted research to identify the gap between US private sector emissions trends and targets and what climate scientists recommend. With Carbon Disclosure Project and other partners, the Destination Gigaton team will build awareness of the gigaton gap and highlight efforts to bridge it over the next few years. SUSTAIN conference originated from the need to provide an inter-disciplinary forum where the most serious problems affecting a sustainable future for human security, in recognition of the fact that many future problems cannot be solved by a โ€œsiloedโ€ approach.
 
The emphasis on a sustainable future is in response to the general awareness of the need to solve numerous human-related problems resulting from the rapid growth of modern society. The topic of a sustainable future for human security needs to be discussed in an integrated way, in accordance with the principles of sustainability, considering energy and materials supply, economies and trade, technology, cities, agriculture, social and environmental aspects.
The conference will address problems of primary importance for human security, discussing and proposing a more constructive and progressive approach to ensure future societal sustainability. Environmental applications are often characterized by the utilization of many different, non-homogeneous information sources, such as text data, measurement data from monitoring networks, structural data on chemical substances, satellite data, etc. In particular, environmental data is often geographically coded, i.e. information is attached to a particular point or region in space. Properly processing this heterogeneous and often massive corps of data and assessing the extremely wide set of possible environmental impacts arising from human activities is not an easy task.

The workshop aims at presenting methods and applications in different scientific domains which are envisioned to provide a valid contribution to the modern developments in the assessment of the environmental impacts linked to human activities.

The techniques that will be presented encompass:

โ€ข Machine learning for environmental data analysis, modelling and visualization;
โ€ข Geostatistics, remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications to land use change detection and modelling;
โ€ข Biophysically based models to study the effects produced on ecosystem services by human activities entailing land occupation and transformation;
โ€ข Application of Agent Based Modelling (ABM) approaches considering urban land uses versus natural and agricultural land uses;
โ€ข Linear Programming and Constraint Programming applied to solve constraint satisfaction problems involving environmental variables.

The workshop is organized by the working groups ENVISA (Environmental Issues in Spatial Analysis) and MODUS (Modelling Urban Space) under the umbrella of the international research network named S4 (Spatial Simulations for the Social Sciences - http://s4.parisgeo.cnrs.fr/). It is hosted by the Public Research Centre Henri Tudor (Luxembourg) and the University of Luxembourg. Financial support by the National Research Fund of Luxembourg (FNR).

Dear Colleagues,

I am happy to announce a workshop on Uncertainty in LCA, to be held
"attached" to the SETAC conference in Berlin, on May 22 this year.

The workshop will be the first in a series of three, and will present an
adaptive framework for uncertainty management; (a bit) more in detail,
contents will be:
- definitions and types of uncertainties
- adaptive framework for uncertainty,
       * background and idea
       * practical application and demonstration, also based on a case
study
- consequences, and lessons learned.

Aim is to present our work and ideas, but also, to seek input from the
audience, by a lively, guided discussion, and ideally, to come to an
agreement, at the workshop, or in a coordinated discussion afterwards.
Therefore, if you are working on uncertainty in LCA, have own ideas, and/or
just want to get updated on recent thoughts and developments, we encourage
you to join and participate.

The workshops are part of a project of the uncertainty working group within
the UNEP/SETAC life cycle initiative, funded by The Sustainability
Consortium. Goal of the project is to deliver, within the next two years, a
practical framework for uncertainty that provides a coordinated,
well-acceptable definition of uncertainty, concepts for sampling uncertainty
information, and concepts for dealing with uncertainty propagation. We will
perform illustrative case studies to demonstrate the applicability and
relevance, and summarise and condense findings in recommendations for good
practice.

The workshop will be held on May 22, 2012, in Berlin, at the venue of the
SETAC conference.

We are now accepting proposals for Educational classes, which will be held on Monday the 24th September. Classes can be between 90 minutes and 4 hours in length. Committee Updates

Technical Committee: The committee held its second meeting of the year earlier this month. The main task of the committee is to provide guidance on recommended practice for applying LCIA metrics for PCR development in the Americas. Currently the committee has developed criteria to evaluate each impact category based on scientific qualities, stakeholder acceptance and applicability to existing LCI data sets. A Climate Change sub-committee has been created to look into the first impact category, which will be used as a template for the others categories to be reviewed. Next Committee Meeting: April 10th.

PCR Committee: The 1st meeting to develop PCR guidance was held this month. Currently 32 representatives from various US, Canadian, French and Japanese EPD programs, industry associations, NGOs, corporations, government agencies, consulting firms and universities are participating. The intention of the effort is to develop guidance that will supplement existing standards for LCA based declarations, and promote harmonization of PCRs across various programs, product categories as well as for other purposes.

LEED 2012 Open for Public Comment

The third draft of LEED 2012 has made progress but there still needs a bit of work before it can reach the intended goal of 'driving market transformation to sustainability.'  The commenting period has now past, but you can access the third draft by clicking here. Improvements needed in LEED 2012 include creating clear incentives for projects, rather than reducing the incentives for compliance with high performance standards.

The Philippines feel the EPD Pressure on Exports....

June Alvarez, the Executive Director at the Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc., mentioned that the European export market has now become a major driver in eco-labeling requirement; particularly in Western Europe.

A National Eco-labeling Program-Green Choice Philippines (NELP-GCP) has been created to promote the production and purchase of Eco-friendly products.  It is a voluntary third-party environmental declaration based on ISO 14024, which is the type 1 of the Eco-labeling. Read more.

Committees Continued

Policy Committee: The committee is currently working to influence LCA policy at both the governmental and business levels. In order to do this various projects are underway. An initial project is to determine which policies are currently in use by Federal, State and Local Governments. In order to accomplish this, the committee is looking for volunteers to assist with compiling a spreadsheet of state and local LCA policies, which can then be used to identify what trends and best practices are occurring throughout the country. A further area of focus for the committee is LEED 2012. The policy committee is working to guide and shape the applicable LCA/Eco-label/EPD credit language of the USGBC to ensure accuracy to appropriate standards, transparency and promotion of acceptable LCA use within the LEED 2012 program. DID YOU KNOW THAT?...

Japan has just completed its three year carbon footprint experiment, with notable success?

Over 75 product category rules were developed and over 450 products were footprinted. The results were shared at the Carbon Footprint Symposium, which took place February 23rd in Tokyo, Japan. Rita Schenck spoke at the conference about EPD progress in the United States.

The next step in Japan is the transfer of the carbon footprint program from a government funded (METI) program to a privately funded program of JEMAI, the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry. The program will be combined with the existing Ecoleaf EPD program.

LCA Text Book Plans Underway

Many educational LCA professionals have expressed their concerns regarding a lack of sources to teach LCA. ACLCA has created an LCA text book ad-hoc committee, which has been well received within the LCA community, with over 25 key educational professionals signing up to assist with the planning of the book.  ACLCA will commission authors for the various chapters, an over all editor and designer to ensure the success of this text book. 2. หลักสูตรฝึกอบรมการจัดการไอซีทีสำหรับผู้บริหารและสนับสนุน รุ่นที่ 3 (ICT Management fot Non-ICT Executive: NIT)
    สร้างผู้บริหารและสนับสนุน (Non ICT Executives) ที่มีสมรรถนะและขีดความสามารถสูงด้านไอซีที พร้อมที่จะร่วมมือกับผู้บริหารศูนย์ไอซีทีในการขับเคลื่อนไอซีทีและ/หรือ นวัตกรรมขององค์กร
    เหมาะสำหรับ: ผู้อำนวยการสายงานบริหารและสนับสนุน ที่ไม่ใช่บุคลากรไอซีที หรือผู้บริหารระดับกลาง
    อบรม: 15 มิถุนายน - 14 กันยายน 55 (ทุกวันศุกร์)  ศึกษาดูงาน:  ญี่ปุ่น 10-14 กรกฎาคม 55
                               
3. หลักสูตรวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีสีเขียว สำหรับผู้บริหาร (Green for Executives:  G4X)

    เหมาะสำหรับ: ผู้บริหารระดับสูง (Top Executive) ของหน่วยงานภาครัฐและเอกชน (CIO, CEO, COO)

4. หลักสูตรฝึกอบรมการจัดการไอซีทีสำหรับผู้จัดการสายงานไอซีที รุ่นที่ 3 (ICT Management for ICT Manager: ITM)
    ยกระดับผู้บริหารระดับต้นในส่วนงานไอซีทีให้มีความรู้ มีสมรรถนะในการบริหารจัดการไอซีทีที่เหมาะสมและสอดคล้องกับสภาวการณ์ที่ เปลี่ยนแปลงในปัจจุบันและแนวโน้มในอนาคต
    เหมาะสำหรับ: ผู้จัดการฝ่าย/หัวหน้าส่วนงานไอซีที หรือผู้บริหารระดับต้นที่ปฏิบัติงานสนับสนุนการดำเนินงานด้านไอซีทีของหน่วย งาน
    อบรม: 20 กันยายน - 8 พฤศจิกายน 55 (ทุกวันพฤหัสบดีและศุกร์)  ศึกษา ดูงาน: สิงคโปร์ 2-5 ตุลาคม 55
