Subject: Air Travel with Objectionable items- A very very serious

Dear Friends,

Yesterday only I  came to know of a case from a friend of mine which
is very scary. One of his friends was traveling to UK via Dubai.
Unfortunately he was carrying a packet of Khas Khas which is a
commonly used spice in some Indian curries and sweets. Khas Khas is
also known as poppy seed which can be sprouted to grow narcotics
(afeem etc.).

This innocent person did not know that recently the laws in UAE and
other Gulf countries have been revised and carrying Khas Khas is
punishable with minimum 20 years of imprisonment or even worse with
death penalty. Currently, the person is in a jail in Dubai for the
last two weeks. His friends are frantically trying hard for his
release but are finding that this has become a very very serious case.
Lawyers are asking huge fees amounting to AED 100,000 even to appear
in the court to plead for his innocence.

Please forward this email to all you know specially in India. They
should know the seriousness of this matter and should never ever carry
even minutest quantities of the following items when traveling to Gulf
countries:

1. Khas Khas whether raw, roasted or cooked.
2. Paan
3. Beetle nut (supari and its products, e.g. Paan Parag etc.)

The penalties are very severe and it could destroy the life of an
innocent person.

I appeal you to create the awareness by forwarding this email to all you know.

Thanks and Best Regards

Joint Statement of Indian Muslim leaders
on the attacks and burning of Christian properties

New Delhi, 14 September 2010: Indian Muslim leaders issued the following statement today:

"We disapprove disrespect to any religion or desecration of any sacred scripture or vilification of any religious personality or attack on any religious place, anywhere in the world, and consider it a despicable and uncivilized act. Islam specifically prohibits such acts and behaviour. Therefore, whatever the provocation, we strongly condemn the attacks on Christian properties and institutions in some places in Kashmir and in Maler Kotla in the Indian state of Punjab. We urge the authorities concerned to take stern legal action against the culprits.

We also appeal to our Muslim brethren in India, in particular, and elsewhere, in general, to show restraint in such situations and limit their disapproval and protest against such incidents to peaceful demonstrations, press statements and memoranda to the authorities concerned."

Issued by:
Syed Shahabuddin, President, All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat
Nusrat Ali, Secretary General, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind
Asaduddin Owaisi, MP, Leader, Majlis Ittehadul Muslimin

Physician Heal Thyself — Tackling Islamophobia and anti-Islam forces

We don’t need to help Islam and serve it as much as we should help and serve ourselves with the help of Islam.

By Wasim Ahmad,

There is a video which propagates a negative image of Islam and among many I have been asked to write against it and dispel the misunderstanding about Islam. I would submit that a lot many misconceptions about Islam have already been dealt with – by many. Doing the same thing again and spending time on it is tahseel-e-haasil (obtaining the obtained). Darul Musannifeen Shibli Academy Azamgarh has brought about a volume on Maz’habi Rawaadaari aur Islam by Late Syed Sabahuddin ‘Abdur Rahman and Thomas Arnold’s Preaching of Islam takes care of some other objections. There could be many more good works known to many. It is not a secret.

While the above exercise was and is certainly important, I, however, get an impression that the things will be fine as soon as we are able to provide authentic answers to the objections raised. I am afraid, it will not be enough. Providing answers to the questions is a short-cut. Living according to the ideals of Islam – in all walks of life – is the longest way. In the ultimate analysis, however, this longest is the only short-cut.

It also makes me feel that we are still thinking that the problem lies somewhere else i.e. with others who have misunderstanding about Islam and which (of course) we should dispel. In this given situation of our own drift from the real spirit of Islam, it amounts to searching for the needle on the road under the broad day light while actually we have lost it somewhere in the dark corner of our house. It amounts to shifting the focus from ourselves to somewhere else – the most convenient thing to do on earth.

I recall a parallel here. A few months ago someone in my workplace suggested that we should start our daily meetings with the recitation of Soorah al-‘Asr and its translation. There are people of different faiths among our colleagues and they, too, have a right for their religious books. It is a fact that was conveniently overlooked. The friend who came up with this proposal I later asked him why he wanted to initiate such a tradition. He replied that our job was to give da‘wah and once we have recited and given the translation our job is over. I told him that our job is NOT over by the recitation alone. I explained to him that we should be living according to the spirit of that Soorah. We should be the topmost in the observation of timings and we should be the most patient ones besides searching after the truth to the maximum and advising each other for the same (which is the import of Soorah al-‘Asr). To the extent that ‘Mr Malhotra’ asks us why are the Muslims so much regular in their duties besides being very patient lovers of truth? Then we should intervene and explain that there is a Soorah in Qur’an which enjoins the above traits as a duty upon us and It has many other beautiful principles.

Acting, however, according to the beautiful injunctions of Soorah al-‘Asr in the entire life is difficult. It is a tedious job. And a ‘boring’ one. Reciting it once in a day as a ritual is quite easy and a short-cut. We take to this short-cut. The fact that we never reach to the destination (no Malhotras ever ask us about anything admirable in us) is not a matter of concern.

The answers will not make much difference. The answers haven’t made much difference. Leave alone any derived answers, all the volumes of Ahaadeeth and the entire Book is already available with us. What else do we need? We need to relate and apply – what we already believe in – in our lives. This will refute all allegations. This will counter all propaganda. But this is the longest way. Writing a volume or two and some articles with all the evidences from history is not that difficult a task.

We have to outlive our tendency of getting easily distracted from the core issues. Our emotional reactions to such situations is precisely our problem. It is this trait which is not allowing us to stay focused. It is not allowing us to take the analyses to logical conclusions. And we are reinforcing this psychology on a daily basis. We never think twice about many things. This is why more thinking is required. The reaction to the above-mentioned video and demand for “well researched arguments” – post-haste – reminds me of the following couplet:

Meer beemaar hu’ay jis ke sabab

usee ‘attaar ke larkay se dawwaa letay haiN

We don’t need to help Islam and serve it as much as we should help and serve ourselves with the help of Islam – a collection of beautiful principles. The beautiful principles are never weak. The beautiful principles never beseech for help. They are never dependent on anyone. This truth we have to realize to the core. We also need to deeply realize the fact that we need to abolish our existing thought patterns.

There is a luxury in this demand of refuting the objections against Islam. The luxury is that the disease is in others who have misunderstanding about Islam. As for us, we are perfectly alright. We have no misunderstanding. Hence all our attention and energies should be diverted to the problems without as there are no problems within. It also implies that don’t disturb us. We are in deep sleep. Divert your energies somewhere else. It is an effort to dilute the focus and shift it somewhere.

As for history, we almost always learn the wrong lessons from it. We are supposed to learn history in order not to repeat the mistakes of the past and not get divided and divided – on petty issues. History in our case, however, does exactly the opposite of what it is supposed to. We are masters of the art of learning wrong lessons from the right stories. Qur’an mentions many historical events. In all historical events mentioned by Qur’an there is a moral that do not commit the same mistakes. Do not repeat the same follies. But we do exactly the contrary to what the Book wants from us.

If we had the full picture and had Something in our Right Hand we would not be reacting to any emotive situations to the extent that we get distracted from the real tasks of internal reforms. Having an empty Right Hand and bereft of any civilizational goal we run in all directions – completely disoriented. We have no qualms about wasting our (human) resources. The fact that we haven’t developed much of that – with the power of critical and scientific thinking – is yet another matter.

Please bear in mind that nobody can malign Islam. Nobody can distort it. No false propaganda can affect Islam adversely. We need to remove it from our minds. Let us not try to safeguard Islam and serve it. Let us not assume that we are the saviors of Islam. Not really. Just as nobody can hurt honesty. Nobody can malign integrity. No false propaganda can have any negative impact on truthfulness. Hence, let us not worry about Islam as much as we should worry about Muslims. Let us not be the victims of misplaced priorities which currently we are.

There is no need, hence, to “now stand up to such false propaganda”. The need now is to stand up as witnesses against ourselves. The need now is to heal our own diseases – which we are avoiding on one pretext or the other. Therefore, “all righteous thinking, and highly educated members who would shun their dogmatism, prejudices and biases” should carry out serious soul searching turning the searchlight inward – in “an objective manner”.

The film is not spreading the “fanatic image of Islam”. The Muslims are. There is no need to “negate all that has been said in this film”. There is, however, the need to live according to the beautiful principles of Islam. A single person or a few more should not come up with anything “systematic and organized”. Every single Muslim should. There is no challenge for one or a few persons to “project a correct picture and image (of Islam) through concrete evidence”. There are challenges for everyone. Each individual has to fight his own battle. No delegation whatsoever will do. More than “show(ing) what is true and what is a lie” we should first know the same. All of us. Shunning our excessively communitarian outlook and imbibing an individualistic approach.

We tend to think – because of deep rooted conditioning effects – that “Islam ko khatrah hai”. It always reminds me of “the sky is falling”. The “threat to Islam” indicates a mistaken understanding of the Faith. Take care of yourself and Islam is well taken care of, if that is what you want. In fact, Islam can take care of you much better than you think you can take care of Islam. This is what will turn you into the leaders of the world and can bring about a healthy civilization. In which there is the betterment of humanity.

Let us give up our desire for short-cuts. Let us now come back to the core issues: Our VISION as a people. Doing away with the deep division between deen and dunyaa and deeni and dunyaawee ‘uloom. Let us come back to the real concept of knowledge. Let us come back to the objective of developing a systematic body of ideas and creatively reaching out to the unknown. Let us try our best to see the “whole picture” and “think differently” – about which we are silent. This is a must before anything else. Otherwise:

muzdah baad ai marg ‘Eesaa aap hi beemaar hai

Why are Jews so powerful?

By: Dr Farrukh Saleem

The writer is an Islamabad-based freelance columnist

There are only 14 million Jews in the world; seven million in the Americas, five million in Asia, two million in Europe and 100,000 in Africa. For every single Jew in the world there are 100 Muslims. Yet, Jews are more than a hundred times more powerful than all the Muslims put together. Ever wondered why?

Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish. Albert Einstein, the most influential scientist of all time and TIME magazine's "Person of the Century", was a Jew. Sigmund Freud -- id, ego, superego -- the father of psychoanalysis was a Jew. So were Karl Marx, Paul Samuelson and Milton Friedman.

Here are a few other Jews whose intellectual output has enriched the whole humanity: Benjamin Rubin gave humanity the vaccinating needle. Jonas Salk developed the first polio vaccine. Alert Sabin developed the improved live polio vaccine. Gertrude Elion gave us a leukemia fighting drug. Baruch Blumberg developed the vaccination for Hepatitis B. Paul Ehrlich discovered a treatment for syphilis (a sexually transmitted disease). Elie Metchnikoff won a Nobel Prize in infectious diseases.

 Bernard Katz won a Nobel Prize in neuromuscular transmission. Andrew Schally won a Nobel in endocrinology (disorders of the endocrine system; diabetes, hyperthyroidism). Aaron Beck founded Cognitive Therapy (psychotherapy to treat mental disorders, depression and phobias). Gregory Pincus developed the first oral contraceptive pill. George Wald won a Nobel for furthering our understanding of the human eye. Stanley Cohen won a Nobel in embryology (study of embryos and their development). Willem Kolff came up with the kidney dialysis machine.

Over the past 105 years, 14 million Jews have won 15-dozen Nobel Prizes while only three Nobel Prizes have been won by 1.4 billion Muslims (other than Peace Prizes).

Why are Jews so powerful? Stanley Mezor invented the first micro-processing chip. Leo Szilard developed the first nuclear chain reactor. Peter Schultz, optical fibre cable; Charles Adler, traffic lights; Benno Strauss, Stainless steel; Isador Kisee, sound movies; Emile Berliner, telephone microphone and Charles Ginsburg, videotape recorder.

 Famous financiers in the business world who belong to Jewish faith include Ralph Lauren (Polo), Levis Strauss (Levi's Jeans), Howard Schultz (Starbuck's) , Sergey Brin (Google), Michael Dell (Dell Computers), Larry Ellison (Oracle), Donna Karan (DKNY), Irv Robbins (Baskins & Robbins) and Bill Rosenberg (Dunkin Donuts).

Richard Levin, President of Yale University, is a Jew. So are Henry Kissinger (American Secretary of State), Alan Greenspan (fed chairman under Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush), Joseph Lieberman, Madeleine Albright (American Secretary of State), Casper  Weinberger (American Secretary of Defense), Maxim Litvinov (USSR Foreign Minister), David Marshal (Singapore 's first Chief Minister), Issac Isaacs (Governor-General of Australia ), Benjamin Disraeli (British statesman and author), Yevgeny Primakov (Russian PM), Barry Goldwater, Jorge Sampaio (President of Portugal ), John Deutsch (CIA Director) , Herb Gray (Canadian Deputy PM), Pierre Mendes (French PM), Michael Howard (British Home Secretary), Bruno Kreisky (Chancellor of Austria ) and Robert Rubin (American Secretary of Treasury).

 In the media, famous Jews include Wolf Blitzer (CNN), Barbara Walters (ABC News), Eugene Meyer (Washington Post), Henry Grunwald (editor-in-chief Time), Katherine Graham (publisher of The Washington Post), Joseph Lelyyeld (Executive Editor, The New York Times), and Max Frankel (New York Times).

Can you name the most beneficent philanthropist in the history of the world? The name is George Soros, a Jew, who has so far donated a colossal $4 billion most of which has gone as aid to scientist s and universities around the world. Second to George Soros is Walter Annenberg, another Jew, who has built a hundred libraries by donating an estimated $2 billion.

At the Olympics, Mark Spitz set a record of sorts by winning seven gold medals. Lenny Krayzelburg is a three-time Olympic gold medalist. Spitz, Krayzelburg and Boris Becker are all Jewish.

Did you know that Harrison Ford, George Burns, Tony Curtis, Charles Bronson, Sandra Bullock, Billy Crystal, Woody Allen, Paul Newman, Peter Sellers, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Douglas, Ben Kingsley, Kirk Douglas, Goldie Hawn, Cary Grant, William Shatner, Jerry Lewis and Peter Falk are all Jewish?

As a matter of fact, Hollywood itself was founded by a Jew. Among directors and producers, Steven Spielberg, Mel Brooks, Oliver Stone, Aaron Spelling (Beverly Hills 90210), Neil Simon (The Odd Couple), Andrew Vaina (Rambo 1/2/3), Michael Man (Starsky and Hutch), Milos Forman (One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest), Douglas Fairbanks (The Thief of Baghdad ) and Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) are all Jewish.

To be certain, Washington is the capital that matters and in Washington the lobby that matters is The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC. Washington knows that if PM Ehud Olmert were to discover that the earth is flat, AIPAC will make the 109th Congress pass a resolution congratulating Olmert on his discovery.

William James Sidis, with an IQ of 250-300, is the brightest human who ever existed. Guess what faith did he belong to? And all that and more makes be proud to be one.

 So, why are Jews so powerful? Answer: Education Why are Muslims so powerless?

There are an estimated 1,476,233,470 Muslims on the face of the planet: one billion in Asia, 400 million in Africa, 44 million in Europe and six million in the Americas. Every fifth human being is a Muslim; for every single Hindu there are two Muslims, for every Buddhist there are two Muslims and for every Jew there are one hundred Muslims. Ever wondered why Muslims are so powerless?

 Here is why: There are 57 member-countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), and all of them put together have around 500 universities; one university for every three million Muslims. The United States has 5,758 universities and India has 8,407. In 2004, Shanghai Jiao Tong University compiled an "Academic Ranking of World  Universities", and intriguingly, not one university from Muslim-majority states was in the top-500.

As per data collected by the UNDP, literacy in the Christian world stands at nearly 90 per cent and 15 Christian-majority states have a literacy rate of 100 per cent. A Muslim-majority state, as a sharp contrast, has an average literacy rate of around 40 per cent and there is no Muslim-majority state with a literacy rate of 100 per cent. Some 98 per cent of the "literates" in the Christian world had completed primary school, while less than 50 per cent of the 'literates' in the Muslim world did the same. Around 40 per cent of the "literates" in the Christian world attended university while no more than two per cent of the "literates" in the Muslim world did the same.

Muslim-majority countries have 230 scientists per one million Muslims. The US has 4,000 scientists per million and Japan has 5,000 per million. In the entire Arab world, the total number of full-time researchers is 35,000 and there are only 50 technicians per one million Arabs (in the Christian world there are up to 1,000 technicians per one million). Furthermore, the Muslim world spends 0.2 per cent of its GDP on research and development, while the Christian world spends around five per cent of its GDP.

Conclusion: The Muslim world lacks the capacity to produce knowledge.

Daily newspapers per 1,000 people and number of book titles per million are two indicators of whether knowledge is being diffused in a society. In Pakistan, there are 23 daily newspapers per 1,000 Pakistanis while the same ratio in Singapore is 360. In the UK, the number of book titles per million stands at 2,000 while the same in Egypt is 20.

Conclusion: The Muslim world is failing to diffuse knowledge.

Exports of high technology products as a percentage of total exports are an important indicator of knowledge application. Pakistan's exports of high technology products as a percentage of total exports stands at one per cent. The same for Saudi Arabia is 0.3  percent; Kuwait, Morocco, and Algeria are all of 0.3 percent while Singapore is 58 percent. Conclusion: The Muslim world is failing to apply knowledge. Why are Muslims powerless? Because we aren't producing knowledge. Because we aren't diffusing knowledge. Because we aren't applying knowledge. And, the future belongs to  knowledge-based societies.

Interestingly, the combined annual GDP of 57 OIC-countries is under $2 trillion. America, just by herself, produces goods and services worth $12 trillion; China $8 trillion, Japan $3.8 trillion and Germany $2.4 trillion (purchasing power parity basis).

Oil rich Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar collectively produce goods and services (mostly oil) worth $500 billion. Spain, alone, produces goods and services worth over $1 trillion; Catholic Poland $489 billion and Buddhist Thailand $545 billion while Muslim GDP as a percentage of world GDP is fast declining.

 So, why are Muslims so powerless? Answer: Lack of education.

All we do is shout to Allah the whole day long and blame everyone else for our multiple failures.

Rama was Born ? That's interesting !

By Umar Shariff, Discover Islam Education Trust, Bangalore

Interestingly, in the latest verdict of the Allahabad High Court, one of the Judges mentioned that, Rama, the deity of some Hindus, to have taken birth in Ayodhya. This is quite astonishing. All through my life, I have always heard that Ramayana and Mahabharatha were Mythological stories, i.e the study of fictious and unrealistic stories. And today some one says that Rama was  born ! Thats interesting. Isn't it? Would be interested to look into the evidences.

If Rama was truly born, then that is another interesting thing; for God is never born, and never dies. God has no beginning; and HE has no end. God has no parents, nor does HE have wife or children. HE doesn't sleep; nor does HE rest. HE does not need anyone's help; and HE is free from all imperfections. But, when we read the Ramayana, we come across that, Rama was born to Dasharata, the King. Rama's mother was Kausalya, His brother was Lakshmana, he had Sita as his wife, he had children Luv and Kush, he ate food, he slept, he even sought the help of Hanuman to rescue his wife from Ravana...and so on. All these things make us believe that Rama was not absolute and eternal; he was not the self sufficient Master. Ram Janma or the Birth of Rama only makes us believe that he was not the Creator of the Universe. I mean the Mythological Rama is not possessing the attributes of being God.

Hypothetically speaking, if someone says that, Rama was born in Ayodhya, that is also interesting. If one gives us all the proofs to make us believe that Rama was actually born in Ayodhya, so whats the big deal over it? If one takes birth in any land, that does not mean that that land belongs to him. Imagine we go by this trend, then the hospital where my mother delivered me would belong to me. And every individual who takes birth in any particular place may demand for the land that he was born in. That sounds a little ridiculous isn't it? My question is that, if Rama was actually born there in Ayodhya, why must anyone demand for the place where one takes birth? One does not own a place by taking birth there. He must either purchase the land or rule the land. The stronger ruler dominates the land. That was history. Every ruler in the past extended his territory by conquering other kingdoms to rule the maximum that he could. That was the way of the kings of the past. Then the Britishers established supremacy over the Indian rulers through the means of power alone. Today, we are living at a time when the Indian government, or the Indian Democratic government is holding power over the inhabitants of India. Tomorrow, who knows, something may dominate the democratic India too. Whenever injustice is done, the reaction of the people would be to look for an alternative. And the True System for Justice would surely prevail over all the inefficient systems.

History is in records, and people don't care about history. Thats the reason for all confusion. All said and done, here is another observation. Not all Hindus believe in Rama as their lord. There are people amongst the hindus, who worship Ravana also. There are Hindus who dont believe in all the scriptures as sacred. There are people amongst them who dont believe in Manusmriti, the law book of the Hindus. There are many so called Hindus, who dont believe in idol worship... and the list goes on. Hence, the latest verdict does not really mean anything for most of the Hindus here. Most of the Hindus have embraced Islam and Christianity too. The Indian Muslims are majorly the Hindus who converted to Islam. The current day's Muslims in India are those who have forsaken their forefather's religions; for various reasons. We Muslims are also not really bothered about this verdict. For we never had much hopes in the first place. We never saw justice in the current system. We haven't seen the perpetrators of law to be punished. We never saw the people who demolished the masjid to be put behind bars. We still see the provokers of riots to be seen in television, holding seats in the parliament and giving beautiful speeches that unveils their pinnacle of hypocrisy. Hope you would agree on that.

One last word I want to share. "For Peace to prevail, Justice must be delivered".  May God bless India.

"Of all the many outstanding personalities with whom I have worked abroad during the international program years at Michigan State [University], Akhtar Hameed Khan was the most impressive. He combined Gandhi-like sensitivity and dedication to the plight of the common man with the profound vision of a poet-philosopher; and he blended the considerable administrative skills of the elite Indian Civil Service (ICS) with the insights of an applied social scientist and historian…His Scandinavian colleagues and other advisors had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize."

— Scholar & Professor Ralph H. Smuckler

Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan was a pioneer in the disciplines of rural development and poverty alleviation as well as microfinance. According to Yasmeen Niaz Mohiuddin (Ralph Owen Distinguished Professor of Economics), his "'research and extension' methods of community development is followed today by numerous development agencies and NGO's around the world…His Comilla project is considered by many to be the precursor of world-renowned microfinance institutions." His contributions to rural development and poverty alleviation certainly rank him among the top social scientists of the twentieth century. But how did Dr. Khan grow to become a legend in the field and what lessons can be learned from his work?

Dr. Khan's early professional career was primarily in Government service. In 1936, he joined the Indian Civil Service (I.C.S.), a high status profession bestowed with virtually unlimited power by the colonial government. As an I.C.S. officer, Dr. Khan could have easily made a fortune for himself and attained a high social standing. However, he instead chose to pursue a life of public service. In 1959, the Pakistan (now Bangladesh) Academy for Rural Development (BARD) was established at Comilla. It was here that Dr. Khan, as the Founding Director, launched his Comilla Cooperative scheme, which sought to uplift the impoverished through individual empowerment and grassroots involvement in the areas of agricultural and rural development. In implementing his program, Dr. Khan introduced a number of innovative methods for poverty alleviation, including microcredit, a novel concept predicated on providing small loans to the poor. His approach was not without opposition, however. When Dr. Khan first introduced his microcredit and microsavings schemes at BARD, a number of influential moneylenders opposed the scheme. Ralph Smuckler wrote in his book, A University Turns To The World, "…the Comilla Project did have serious enemies, among them the moneylenders, whose income was cut substantially by the cooperative system and the increased productivity." But Dr. Khan was determined to achieve his objectives, and ultimately his critics could not argue with the success of his methods. The Academy soon became a model for rural development, and other initiatives sought to replicate Dr. Khan's approach.

Witnessing Dr. Khan's outstanding work at Comilla, President Ayub Khan offered him the positions of Governorship of East Pakistan, Vice Chancellor of Dacca University, and Advisor to the President (Dr. Khan declined the positions). Additionally, Dr. Khan's work at Comilla earned him the admiration of the Bengali people. I personally witnessed the affection for Dr. Khan during my stay at his house in 1969. While there, I could sense the people's profound respect for him, as reflected by the photos of Dr. Khan in houses and shops throughout Comilla and other areas. The importance of Dr. Khan's pioneering work at Comilla continues to be recognized today. According to the book Foreign Aid and Foreign Policy: Lessons for the Next Half-Century, " The village small cooperative loan system set up through Comilla was a forerunner of the Grameen Bank, now considered a major breakthrough in terms microcredit." The current Joint Director of Bard, Milan Kanti Bhattacharje also wrote to me, "Dr. Khan is…often quoted here at BARD in different training courses, seminars, workshops and academic dialogues as the forerunner of micro credit." Additionally, he stated:

"The library of BARD is named as Akhter Hameed Khan Library…Comilla town fosters the memory of Dr Khan by naming one of its establishments as Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan Training Hall and another one as Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan Vocational Training Centre. Both are at the KTCCA [Kotwali Thana Central Cooperative Association] premises. The road connecting KTCCA Ltd., Comilla Export Processing Zone and some other important places of Comilla is named as Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan Sharak [Road]… some among the well-wishers of Khan established Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan Foundation... An old cottage at Comilla town also bearing memories of Khan is named as Akhter Hameed Khan Memorial House.

BARD, KTCCA and Foundation observe late Khan's birth and death anniversaries [anniversaries] and participate in each other's programmes…Khan's photos are displayed at several places at BARD premises…quotations from his writings/speeches at different corners, class rooms, conference rooms and library at the campus. KTCCA also does the same. Cooperative societies in many villages also display his photo and pieces of advice. BARD translated the three volumes of the Works of Akhter Hameed Khan in Bangla…The Golden Jubilee publications of BARD contain some articles on Dr Khan. All these carry the sweet and inspiring memories of Dr Akhter Hameed Khan..."

Dr. Khan's success did not end with BARD. In 1980, he started another grassroots movement in Karachi under the name of the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP). Like BARD, it was established based on Dr. Khan's belief that self-help and self-reliance were key to development. According to Arif Hasan (writer and consultant to the United Nations), "Akhtar Hameed Khan established the OPP to develop sustainable models for the upgrading of low-income settlements, mobilizing local resources. He was a scientist and Orangi was his laboratory…" Once again, Dr. Khan's methods proved to be highly successful. Hasan further wrote in his book, "The OPP-RTI programmes have made an impact at various levels. There is the impact in Orangi, in the OPP-RTI replication areas, on civil society and NGOs, on government projects and policies, on and donar-funded programmes, and on academia. The impact of the OPP-RTI programmes in Orangi has been stated in many publications." Dr. Khan's model at Orangi continues to be replicated not only in Pakistan, but in many parts of the world. A large number of visitors from within and outside the country regularly visit OPP to apply the lessons learned from Dr. Khan.

Through his decades of work on behalf of the impoverished, Dr. Khan made a tremendous impact. Deepa Narayan and Elena E. Glinskaya wrote in their book (published by the World Bank), "Over five decades, Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan, inspired and motivated thousands of development professionals in South Asia, winning a reputation as a visionary and teacher." Many prestigious honors — including the Sitara-i-Pakistan (1961), the Magsaysay Award (Asia's Nobel Prize, 1963), an Honorary Doctorate from Michigan State University (1964), and the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (2001) — were bestowed upon Dr. Khan in recognition of his unprecedented and pioneering work in rural development and poverty alleviation.

Dr. Khan passed away on October 9, 1999. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his work. BARD and OPP applied techniques that were unprecedented in their time, and represent truly unique contributions from a Muslim social scientist to the world. They have become world-famous centers of excellence and have inspired prominent disciples, who continue to carry forward Dr. Khan's mission. For instance, Professor Muhammad Yunus, who applied microcredit at Grameen Bank, earned the Nobel Prize. Other notable disciples of Dr. Khan include Shoaib Sultan Khan (Magsaysay Award), Tasneem Ahmad Siddiqui (Magsaysay Award), Tahrunnesa Ahmed Abdullah (Magsaysay Award), and Mohammad Yeasin (Magsaysay Award). Thus, Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan, the unsung hero of the East and West, quietly changed the world. For his unparalleled work and services to the nation, the Government of Pakistan should rename Orangi Town (and the road leading to it) as Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan Town. We must also continue to learn and spread Dr. Khan's methods, to inspire more great men like him. In this regard, it is imperative that his techniques of self-help development and poverty alleviation are included in the educational curriculum at all levels. In addition, research chair positions in various universities must be established to further explore and publish his groundbreaking methods, structures, and schemes. While Dr. Khan may have left us, such steps would help to ensure that his innovative methods for rural development, microcredit, and self-reliance continue to benefit the impoverished around the world for generations to come.

LOVE GOD OR FEAR GOD?

Asghar Ali Engineer

There are two different approaches to worship God for fear, greed or sheer love and devotion. Most of us ordinary people worship God either for fear of punishment or greed for reward in paradise. In Sufi lore it is said once Rabia Basri, a great Sufi woman of 23nd century hijrah (8th century A.D.) once was carrying bucket of water in one hand and a burning torch in the other. When people saw her they asked O! Rabia why are you carrying this bucket of water and burning torch?

She replied I want to set fire to paradise with this torch and put out fire of hell with this bucket of water so that people do not worship Allah out of greed for paradise or fear of hell but out of pure love. Rabia loved God so much that she would say I have no time to hate Satan. My heart is filled with love of God and has no place even for hate. This is pure love and most meritorious way of worshipping God.

All saints and Awliya Allah (noble souls, friends of Allah) only talk of love, not of fear. From India Rabia's counter-part is Meera. She was great devotee of God in the form of Lord Krishna whom she calls by different names – Girdhar, Gopala, Krshna, Natwar and so on. She composed verses in common people's language like Rajasthani, Marwari, Gujrati Biraj bhasha and so on. She is greatly loved by people even five hundred years after her death.

It was love of her Lord which made her fearless and she broke all royal traditions. Her devotion to her Lord made her renounce everything, her royal palace and she took life of common people and moved around with sadhus and sans. Her royal family put tremendous pressure on her but she did not budge. Love really makes one truly fearless. Her devotional songs are sung by millions of people even today. One wonders at the intensity of love found in her poetry. It overwhelms us all.

Maulana Rum is another shining example of love and devotion. He was a great `alim and jurist. He used to deliver sermons and had highest place in the court of king. Thousands of disciples would come to listen to him and his sermons. He would have not been known to the world despite his euridite knowledge if he had not met one day a Darvesh (mendicant) called Shams Tabriz One day he was delivering sermon as usual and heap of books lay before him which he used to consult.

This mendicant intruded and looked at the books and said what is this? Maulana annoyed with him and said you would not know. Shams Tabriz looked at the books again and they caught fire. Maulana Room said what is this and Tabriz said you would not know. Maulana understood that this mendicant is no ordinary person and went after him. Shams completely transformed him from an `alim to a great sufi saint who renounced everything, his status in the Court, his wealth and comfortable living and became a mendicant like Shams.

He became restless in love and composed many ghazals (love poems) which were collected as Diwan-i-Shams Tabriz. And subsequently he wrote his epic the most revered Mathnavi in several volumes and which came to be known as Qur'an in Persian. It is one of the world classics. It is love, devotion to Allah that made him immortal. Like Meera he was so engrossed in love that he would say my only identity is love, not any religion, region, not even earth and heaven.

On the other hand those who emphasise fear of God, usually the priests and theologians, in fact generate hatred for all others and ultimately through this fear of God they want to establish fear of their own authority in their followers. They try to induce fear in us of hell fire and how we will be punished if we do not obey their authority. It is true Qur'an does talk of hell fire but it is for hardened sinners who do not want refused to give up oppressing others, who are arrogant of their wealth and power.

For ordinary sinners Allah is great pardoner, reconciler and Merciful. His love and Mercy is ever flowing for those who repent and are ready to be good. One should seek this Mercy and Grace through love and devotion. It is love which completely transforms even a most evil character. Those who realize power of love, like Meera and Maulana Rum, never hesitate to renounce love of power.

It is love of power, arrogance and wealth which leads to all evils in the world and it is power of love which negates all these evils and makes this world a paradise. Now it is or us to go for love or for fear. One who loves is truly fearless and indeed it is love which is God and it is God who is love.

SAQI NAMA - Dr. Iqbal

O Saqi! Give me the old wine again!
Let the potent cup go round!
Let me soar on the wings of love;
Make my dust bright-pinioned;
Make wisdom free;
And make the young guide the old;
Thou it is that nourishest. this nation;
Thou it is that canst sustain it;
Urge them to move, to stir;
Give them Ali’s heart; give them Siddiq’s passion;
Let the same old love pierce their hearts;
Awaken in them a burning zeal;
Let the stars throw down their spears,
And let the earth’s dwellers tremble—
Give the young a passion that consumes;
Give them my vision, my love of God;
Free my boat from the whirlpool’s grip,
And make it move forward-,
Reveal to me the secrets of life,
For thou knowest them all;

The treasures of a fakir like me
Are suffused, unsleeping eyes,
And secret yearnings of the heart-,
My anguished sighs at night,
My solitude in the world of men,
My hopes and my fears,
My quest untiring,
My nature an arena of thought—
A mirror of the world.
My heart a battlefield of life,
With armies of suspicion,
And bastions of certitude;
With these treasures I am
More rich than the richest of all.
Let the young join my throng,
And let them find an anchor of hope.

I was extremely interested on finding an available way to make money, the economy situation can be felt from all classes of the spectrum. I was very sceptical at first but after a little investigation I realized that this was completely 100% not difficult and legit. By following the twitter guru's manual laid out in the on screen news cast I have started a home business that nets me over 4700 dollars a month. You really ought to look into it. Challenges of the idea of India & Muslims

By Dr Wasim Ahmad,

For a Muslim who wants Paradise it should be a lot easier to give Here to get in the Hereafter. Focusing more on seeking and less on giving is a mind-set that has been created and nurtured over a long period of time by the leaders. They have drilled this psychology among Muslims to the deepest levels. I often think that if the leaders point out shortcomings in their people then those people will never clap for them. Please recall the occasions when the entire gathering burst into clapping. Most likely it was an occasion when the speaker played with the emotions of people.

The job of Muslims is tougher. We have to educate the educated first. Our educated are not truly educated. Their mind-set is not much different from the mid-set of the uneducated. If our “educated” get truly educated then it will have an impact on the masses. Then instead of waiting for leaders all of them will become leaders and will try to change the situation. They all will say good-bye to the luxury of excuses for non-performance. Our instant offering of excuses amounts to saying, “We would have performed if the environment was ideal and the situations were favourable”. It amounts to saying, “We would have offered water if you weren’t thirsty”. It defies logic. It defies reason.

When we say that “the condition of Indian Muslims would only be good if there would be reservation for them” we mean that in the absence of desired reservations for Muslims there is every reason for their bad condition. I am sure we will come up with some other excuses as soon as we get reservations and many more such affirmative actions. I wonder when someone advises that “make the atmosphere in such a way that the whole Muslim population of our country unites for this noble cause (of securing reservations)” is it really noble? What would have been noble is to unite for giving and not for demanding. What would have been noble is to pass some resolutions for duties as we do a lot for the rights. We have changed the meaning of words. Instead of changing ourselves.

Once I asked my colleagues to take to the path of research and immediately I heard that there were fewer resources and the facilities were inadequate. When I looked I found that everyone in front of me had at least one head on his shoulders. I wondered which other resources and facilities we needed. Less than ideal and unfavourable governments is a beautiful excuse that I come across every now and then. We love this luxury and savor this delicacy to the maximum. We want to change the governments before we take the first step towards changing ourselves. When I look at our expertise in manufacturing excuses and I contrast it with the outlook of the Benefactor of Humanity (pbuh) I tend to think that he shouldn’t have done anything. Because he had more excuses than we do.

India will be a more diverse society when we will not have exclusive educational institutions. Because then we will learn to accept the differences and will celebrate this variety more as we will be cohabiting with each other at a much maturer and dignified level. The exclusive educational institutions give an impression of a threat perception. This is an inherently negative trait. The very foundation of such institutions is on a mistaken notion. The exclusivism of one community causes more and more exclusivism in another community as a natural reaction. The exclusive educational institutions are a hindrance in the idea of India and may be against the very idea of diversity which we want to maintain by perpetuating these institutions.

What is meant by the “change in outlook”, I have tried to address earlier (http://www.twocircles.net/2010jul26/abolishing_our_existing_thought_patt...). What we need to do to make India a better place is to first make ourselves better persons. If we are able to do that then we will find that India has already become a better place. We don’t need to “convince the RSS minded people who are in power and are trying to bully us and our children every day and not allowing even to have peace of mind to think something positive” for anything. We only need to convince ourselves for all the good things that we currently want from others. Before we ask the RSS to “stop bullying our children everyday” WE ourselves have to stop bullying our own children – with our false notions, emotionalism, communalism, communitarianism and negativity.

In the same environment wherein we and our children do not have “peace of mind to think something positive” we are easily communicating with each other utilizing the most modern technology. Very often I have found that we ourselves are an answer to many of our questions. And very often I think that we ourselves are the field of action. Though we think that the field of action is somewhere farther away. Our children will never think positively if we do not think positively. I often recall the words of a writer: “na’ee nasl kay sudharnay ki ek hi soorat hai. Aur woh yeh ke puraani nasl sudhar jaa’ay”.

We don’t have to “combat this situation in the light of modern action”. We only have to relax. And do the toughest job on earth – change our thinking before we change the thinking of the RSS or the BJP or of anyone else. If we do that then we have already taken the first step towards the idea of India. The greatest challenge to the idea of India is that almost as a natural reflex we think that the problem lies somewhere else. It lies nowhere. It lies within. It is in each one of such. We are India and her idea. If we are ready to part with our preconceived notions and a lot of negative traits that we have grown up with then the idea of India has already taken a concrete shape.

The observation that “Allah (s.w.t.) has given Qur’an and Sunnah to Indian Muslims to give it to those unfortunate non-Muslims, but instead these people are hiding true Islamic teachings just to coexist peacefully with all un-Islamic evil ideologies and enjoy some worldly benefits” is a food for thought. Except the fact that this food has been cooked in a hurry. We have to rethink about what is hiding and what is giving. This version of Islam which is arrived at in haste is a sure recipe for disaster. This version of Islam divides the humanity in thousand and one categories and considers a huge number of the children of Adam as infidels without doing any of those things which the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did in Makkah. This version of Islam gives a confirmed ticket to a private Jannah and its followers get a walk-over. This version of Islam presupposes that there is less space in Paradise. There could be less room in our minds, in fact. We need to minimize quoting from Qur’an and Hadeeth for a while. For a while let us focus on the whole spirit of Qur’an and Islam. This is the collective spirit that we have kept in hiding – from everyone including ourselves.

Let us not ignore the fact that the humanity has come a long way. Now it is quite possible for the people of various cultures and faiths to sit together and discuss ideas openly. These facilities, openness and tolerance, and tools of communication were not available earlier. We should be thankful for the increased avenues of engagement and interaction. It is not the time to fire dogmatic missiles which cause a lot of civilian casualties. This is the time for informed discussion and dialogue. It is not the time for debates either. It is not the time to defeat someone. It is the time to win the people over. Yes, it is harder. But precisely for the same reason it is more desirable.

A respectable gentleman writes, “we Muslims can talk much”. In fact, we don’t talk much. I wish we did. I wish we did it openly and with clarity. We have a habit of remaining away from the crux of it – almost always. We use a lot of words with few meanings. No matter how much we “talk” we don’t actually talk as we fail to address the core issues. This is why the numberless articles and countless books and speeches haven’t and aren’t taking us anywhere. It only indicates that the real communication is missing. To make things worse, speed is more important for us than the direction.

But if we have an idea of India and are aware of the challenges, too, then certainly we can move forward. No obstacles are insurmountable. The human beings have proved it over the ages. Whenever we have very deeply realized our limitations we have overcome them. We are capable of translating the dream of India into a reality. It is an exciting journey of hope.

In Memory of Dr. Inayatullah

A Tribute by Nasim Yousaf

Dr. Inayatullah, a well regarded intellectual and co-founder of the Council of Social Sciences (Pakistan), was born on June 3, 1931 and passed away recently.

He obtained his Master's degree in Sociology from Michigan State University and a PhD in Political Science from Indiana University in the USA. Throughout his career as a researcher, Dr. Sahib worked with various UN research institutions. He also taught at the Pakistan Academy for Rural Development in Peshawar and was the Founder Chairperson of the Department of International Relations at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. Beyond his contributions to newspapers and articles for scholarly journals, he published a number of books, the most recent of which was entitled State and Democracy in Pakistan.

Dr. Inayatullah's accomplishments across academia are certainly formidable, but he will perhaps be best remembered for the organization to which he devoted the last decade of his life: the Council of Social Sciences (COSS). In the late 1990s, Dr. Inayatullah and others recognized the need for an organization to provide a professional forum for the social sciences in Pakistan. Thus, Dr. Inayatullah co-founded the Council of Social Sciences, Pakistan; the organization was officially registered (per Dr. Inayatullah) on June 03, 2000, with Dr. Sahib as President. Dr. Inayatullah was passionately devoted to the COSS and worked hard to build it over the next several years, devoting much of his personal time to recruiting members to the group. Over time, he grew the COSS into a large entity with regular and life members not only from Pakistan, but also from other countries. Dr. Inayatullah's success was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the organization as well as his kind and helpful demeanor. Dr. Inayatullah remained President of the organization until 2008. Appreciating his tremendous services for the development of COSS and social sciences in Pakistan, the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) bestowed upon him its Lifetime Achievement Award.

On a personal level, I first came to know Dr. Sahib in 2003, when he so kindly wrote to me about setting up an award to honor my uncle, social scientist Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan. On February 25, 2003, he wrote, "I knew him [Dr. Khan] closely from 1958. Council of Social Sciences headed by me is instituting an award in his name for best social science book of the year." I appreciated his idea and moved forward with him. He was so kind to accept my small contribution and wrote, "Thank you very much for your generous contribution…I am sure it will facilitate and accelerate the process for further contributions." The award was established under the name Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan Memorial Award, and the first award was announced in 2005 (see http://www.cosspak.org for more information). I shall always be grateful to Dr. Inayatullah for setting up this award honoring my uncle; Dr. Inayatullah's efforts in this regard truly speak to his selfless character.

Through my interactions with Dr. Inayatullah, it was clear that he operated not only with a sense of humility about his own work, but also took a genuine interest in the work of others. Dr. Inayatullah encouraged me to join the COSS writing, "It will add to its strength and further raise our morale." I followed his advice and joined as a Life Member (since 2003). He also displayed a genuine interest in my research on Allama Mashriqi and the Khaksar Tehrik and so kindly reproduced some of my personal email messages and information on my works in the COSS Bulletin for the consumption of COSS members. On July 05, 2006, he wrote to me, "The Council highly appreciates your research contributions on Allama Mashriqi and Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan…" His kind words meant a lot to me. He also graciously sent me a book that he had co-edited entitled Social Sciences in Pakistan: A Profile. These are some of the memories of him that I shall always treasure.

Although Dr. Inayatullah has passed away, he has left behind his intellectual works, including the COSS and the Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan Memorial Award. His efforts on these fronts shall always be remembered. His death has been condoled not only by his relatives and friends, but also by the Higher Education Commission in Pakistan, the Quaid-i-Azam Alumni Association, and the President of Pakistan.

May God grant courage to his family to bear this loss and rest his soul in peace.

Imam Abul Kalam Azad

Speech delivered at Grand Mosque, Delhi, October 23, 1947

My brethren !!

You know what has brought me here today. This congregation at Shahjehan’s historic mosque is not an unfamiliar sight for me. Here, I have addressed you on several previous occasions. Since then we have seen many ups and downs. At that time, instead of weariness, your faces reflected serenity, and your hearts, instead of misgivings, exuded confidence. The uneasiness on your faces and the desolation in your hearts that I see today, reminds me of the events of the past few years.

Do you remember? I hailed you, you cut off my tongue; I picked my pen, you severed my hand; I wanted to move forward, you broke off my legs; I tried to run, and you injured my back. When the bitter political games of the last seven years were at their peak, I tried to wake you up at every danger signal. You not only ignored my call but revived all the past traditions of neglect and denial. As a result the same perils surround you today, whose onset had previously diverted you from the righteous path.

Today, mine is no more than an inert existence or a forlorn cry; I am an orphan in my own motherland. This does not mean that I feel trapped in the original choice that had made for myself, nor do I feel that there is no room left for my ashiana (nest). What it means is that my cloak is weary of your impudent grabbing hands. My sensitivities are injured, my heart is heavy. Think for one moment. What course did you adopt? Where have you reached, and where do you stand now? Haven’t your senses become torpid? Aren’t you living in a constant state of fear? This fear is your own creation, a fruit of your own deeds.

It was not long ago when I warned you that the two-nation theory was death-knell to a meaningful, dignified life; forsake it. I told you that the pillars upon which you were leaning would inevitably crumble. To all this you turned a deaf ear. You did not realize that, my brothers! I have always attempted to keep politics apart from personalities, thus avoiding those thorny valleys. That is why some of my messages are often couched in allusions. The partition of India was a fundamental mistake. The manner in which religious differences were incited, inevitably, led to the devastation that we have seen with our own eyes. Unfortunately, we are still seeing it at some places.

There is no use recounting the events of the past seven years, nor will it serve any good. Yet, it must be state that the debacle of Indian Muslims is the result of the colossal blunders committed by the Muslim League’s misguided leadership. These consequences however, were no surprise to me; I had anticipated them from the very start.

Now that Indian politics has taken a new direction, there is no place in it for the Muslim League. Now the question is whether or not we are capable of constructive thinking. For this, I have invited the Muslim leaders of India to Delhi, during the second week of November.

The gloom cast upon your lives is momentary; I assure you we can be beaten by none save our own selves! I have always said, and I repeat it again today; eschew your indecisiveness, your mistrust, and stop your misdeeds. This unique triple-edged weapon is more lethal than the two-edged iron sword which inflicts fatal wounds, which I have heard of!

Just think about the life of escapism that you have opted for, in the sacred name of Hejrat. Get into the habit of exercising your own brains, and strengthening your own hearts. If you do so, only then will you realize how immature your decisions were.

Where are you going and why? Raise your eyes. The minarets of Jama Masjid want to ask you a question. Where have you lost the glorious pages from your chronicles? Was it only yesterday that on the banks of the Jamuna, your caravans performed wuzu? Today, you are afraid of living here! Remember, Delhi has been nurtured with your blood. Brothers! Create a basic change in yourselves. Today, your fear is misplaced as your jubilation was yesterday.

The words coward and frenzy cannot be spoken in the same breath as the word Muslim. A true Muslim can be swayed neither by avarice nor apprehension. Don’t get scared because a few faces have disappeared. The only reason they had herded you in a single fold was to facilitate their own flight. Today, if they have jerked their hand free from yours, what does it matter? Make sure that they have not run away with your hearts. If your hearts are still in the right place, make them the abode of God. Some thirteen hundred years ago, through an Arab ummi, God proclaimed, “Those who place their faith in God and are firm in their belief, no fear for them nor any sorrow.” Winds blow in and blow out: tempests may gather but all this is short-lived. The period of trial is about to end. Change yourselves as if you had never been in such an abject condition.

I am not used to altercation. Faced with your general indifference, however, I will repeat that the third force has departed, and along with it, its trappings of vanity. Whatever had to happen has happened. If your hearts have still not changed and your minds still have reservations, it is a different matter. But, if you want a change, then take your cue from history, and cast yourself in the new mould. Having completed a revolutionary phase, there still remains a few blank pages in the history of India. You can make ourselves worthy of filling those pages, provided you are willing. Brothers! Keep up with the changes. Don’t say, “We are not ready for the change.” Get ready. Stars may have plummeted down but the sun is still shining. Borrow a few of its rays and sprinkle them in the dark caverns of your lives.

I do not ask you to seek certificates from the new echelons of power. I do not want you to lead a life of sycophancy as you did during the foreign rule. I want you to remind you that these bright etchings which you see all around you, are relics of qafilas of your forefathers. Do not forget them. Do not forsake them. Live like their worthy inheritors, and, rest assured, that if you do not wish to flee from this scene, nobody can make you flee. Come, today let us pledge that this country is ours, we belong to it and any fundamental decisions about its destiny will remain incomplete without our consent.

Today, you fear the earth’s tremors; once you were virtually the earthquake itself. Today, you fear the darkness; once your existence was the epicenter of radiance. Clouds have poured dirty waters and you have hitched up your trousers. Those were none but your forefathers who not only plunged headlong into the seas, but trampled the mountains, laughed at the bolts of lightening, turned away the tornados, challenged the tempests and made them alter their course. It is a sure sign of a dying faith that those who had once grabbed the collars of emperors, are today, clutching their own throats. They have become oblivious of the existence of God as if they had never believed in Him.

Brothers! I do not have a new prescription for you. I have the same old prescription that was revealed to the greatest benefactor of mankind, the prescription of the Holy Quran: “Do not fear and do not grieve. If you possess true faith, you will gain the upper hand.” The congregation is now at an end. What I had to say, I have said, briefly. Let me say once again, keep a grip on your senses. Learn to create your own surroundings, your own world. This is not a commodity that I can buy for you from the market-place. This can be bought only from the market-place of the heart, provided you can pay for it with the currency of good deeds.

May God’s grace be on you!

Remembering Dr. Hamidullah

Abdul Malik Mujahid

In preparation for a script for Sound Vision, I had been reading Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah's books for the last three days when I heard the news of his departure from this world. I will not use the word "sad" in mentioning him. He has, Alhamdu Lillah, contributed substantially to this world. He was successful in this world and we pray that Allah accepts his contributions and rewards him with the best place in paradise. I am pretty sure he would request books in Paradise as well. We all return back to our Creator. Inna lillahe wa inna ilaihe rajeoon.

Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah or M. Hamidullah, as he used to write more often, is probably the most important Muslim research scholar of our time. There are many Islamic scholars, but in terms of dedication to Islamic research, no one is his equal today.

Dr. Hamidullah passed away on Dec 17, 2002, in Jacksonville, FL in his sleep after praying Fajr at the home of his host sister Sadida who is his brother's granddaughter. He was 94 years old. His funeral prayers were led by a Turkish-American scholar Dr. Yusuf Ziya Kavakci, Imam Islamic Association of North Texas. There were about 75 Muslim present when he was buried on Dec. 18, 2002 about 1:30 pm.

His last major contribution was a lecture series which is known as "Khutbat e Bhawalpur" He delivered these 12 exceptional lectures in Rabiul Awwal 1400 Hijrah (March 1980) in Bhawalpur, Pakistan in celebration of the year 1400 of Hijrah. He completed the final revision of the book on 26th Ramadan 1408 (in 1988). The Islamic Research Institute in Islamabad, Pakistan, has published its translation in English as well. I have read this 400-page plus book and have consulted it many times. Dr. Hamidullah presented these 400 pages verbatim, without any notes whatsoever, to an audience of scholars and students at the Bhawalpur Islamic University. With his amazing memory, he represents part of a great tradition of early Islamic scholarship, when good memory was a scholar's essential asset.

Last June, I gave a few lectures on the Prophet's life at the University of Toronto to a select Muslim audience. While researching for those lectures, I ended up reading and referring to more than 20 works on the Prophet's life. These included the books of scholars Shibli Numani, Sulaiman Nadawi, Husain Haikal, Martin Lings, Ibn Hisham, as well as the books Rasool Number of Nuqoosh, Rahiqal Makhtum, and Saiyarah Digest. I also consulted several of Dr. Hamidullah's books. Although my aim was not a comparative study of biographies of the Prophet, it became so when I studied the material.

For example, searching for information about the Hilf al-Fudul was an extraordinary struggle. Hilf al-Fudul was a pre-Islamic pact to assist the helpless in Makkah. The Prophet was a part of it before he became a Prophet. Even after the Prophet migrated to Madinah and became the city's leader, he stated his support for this pact. I was researching Hilf al-Fudul to include in my lecture on "Social Services in the Prophet's Life." It was no surprise to me that the best detailed description I could find was in Dr. Hamidullah's contribution to that topic in the Daira Muarifal Islamia (Urdu Encyclopaedia of Islam) published by the Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan. It is the best research one can find in any language on that topic. Its references even took more space than most of the other works on the same topic.

It was his urge for thoroughness in research that brought him outside Hyderabad, Deccan in India, where he was born. After exhausting the libraries of Hyderabad, he visited those of Makkah, Madinah, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Turkey. These trips taken in early 1930's were taken at a time when travel afar was very difficult and flying around the world, unless you were very rich, was unheard of.

This research investigation that took him to so many countries is essentially presented in his book "The Muslim Conduct of State". He wrote this as his master's thesis for Osmania University in Hyderabad, Deccan.

Dr. Hamidullah completed his first Doctorate degree from Bonn University in Germany in 1933 in a span of only nine months. He then acquired another doctorate degree from the University of Paris on "Early Muslim Diplomacy" the next year. Both of these dissertations interestingly are only one chapter each in the above mentioned book.

Born on 16 Muharram 1326 (Feb. 19, 1908) in Hyderabad Deccan, he was always committed to Hyderabad Deccan. He was Hyderabad's ambassador to the United Nations when India attacked and forcefully occupied Hyderabad Deccan, an independent Muslim state. He decided not to return to the occupied land and stayed on in Paris, France on an asylum visa endoresed by the UN that he is a stateless person. He remained a stateless Hyderabadi citizen without ever applying for the French citizenship. He never visited his occupied homeland. That was his commitment to his country Hyderabad and probably a form of silent protest. Once he realized that the cause of his country's independence from India was abandoned by its people, he dedicated his life to Islamic learning and communication in the Western Hemisphere. He is not only the most important graduate of Osmania University Hyderabad, with master's and law degrees, but was also a professor there until he was appointed Hyderabad's ambassador.

In Paris, he remained a scholar for France's National Center of Scientific Research for 20 years before dedicating himself to serve Islam. After he was struck with Alzheimer's disease, he moved to Pittsburgh, PA probably in 1995 and later to Jacksonville, FL.

Dr. Hamidullah's contribution to Dawa includes his translation of the Quran in French, "Le Saint Coran". It is more widely used in the French-speaking countries of Africa and France than Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation in the English- speaking world. His "Le Prophete de l'Islam" has been popular in French, English, and Slavic. His book "Introduction to Islam" has been translated in more than 12 languages, and has been published legally and illegally.

Dr. Hamidullah's foremost research is in Islamic history and Muslim international law. He asserts the uniqueness of Muslim international law very powerfully in his book "Muslim conduct of State", and defines it as "being a treatise on Siyar, that is, Islamic notion of Public International Law, consisting of the Laws of War, Peace and Neutrality together with Precedents from Orthodox Practice" of Islam.

Dr. Hamidullah also brought to light an early Islamic document called "Sahifa." Based on that, he asserts that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, came up with "The First Written Constitution in the World" which is the title of one of his books. He has printed the Arabic text of Sahifa with his research, English translation, and full references. This amazing book asserts that the Madinan state established by the Prophet was the first multi-ethnic and multi-religious federated state in the world, in which the Prophet stated that "wa inna yahoodu bani awf ummat mahal mumineen" "And verily the Jews of the Banu Awf shall be considered as an Umah (community) among the Believers. " Saying that Madinah's was the first written constitution in the world, Dr. Hamidullah notes:

"In the present state of my knowledge, there is no earlier text known to history. Solon's work at Athens cannot be considered as the promulgation of a constitution. He was not the sovereign monarch, but a delegate of the governing body; he did propose certain constitutional changes which were approved and applied by the governing body of the City-State of Athens, but we do not know if they were published in writing; certainly they did not constitute a comprehensive constitution for running the State.

We do possess the Constitution of Athens by Aristotle, but it is not a constitution: it is the history and evolution of the constitution of the City-State of Athens, compiled by a minister. In his time, the City-State had long since ceased to exist...

For these reasons I provisionally maintain that the text of the time of the Prophet of Islam … is the earliest of its kind in history."

Dr. Hamidullah's other contribution includes his research and publication of Sahifa Humam bin Mumbah, which is the oldest collection of Hadith complied at the time of Sahabah. He also published a bibliography of Quran translations in 120 languages of the world, along with translations of the first chapter. He also did a comparative study of all the three of the earliest copies of the Quran found in the world. One in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, another in Istanbul, Turkey and one in India Office Library, London, UK. All three have been traced back to the time of third Khalifa Usman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him. Dr. Hamidullah said all three were written on a similar type of skin, and look authentic for that period. He also said, after seeing bloodstains on the Turkish copy, that this was what Usman was studying from when he was killed. I have seen a limited edition of Dr. Hamidullah's comparative version of the Tashkent copy with modern script of the Quran. He wanted to publish the whole Quran with Tashkent script on the right and current script on the left.

Most of Dr. Hamidullah's works are highly relevant and useful in the current environment of attacks on the Prophet and Islam. Sh. Muhammad Ashraf publishers, who have printed and distributed some of his books, have done an admirable job of keeping Dr. Hamidullah's books in print. They are also the ones who introduced the Abdullah Yusuf Ali translations to the world and hold copyrights for it as well. Sh. Muhammad Ashraf, the man who started this company, died and his grandson, is now running the family business. I spoke to him about asserting copyrights on Yusuf Ali's translation so it will not go through the abuse it is going through at this moment. I wish either Sh. Muhammad Ashraf publishers of Lahore, Pakistan themselves come up with better quality prints of his books which are suitable for the Western market, or the Islamic Research Institute of Islamabad takes over the republishing of Dr. Hamidullah's works. The latter has done a better job of printing "Khutbat e Bhawalpur" and its English translation with quality.

Dr. Hamidullah has done his job, Alhamdu Lillah. Let's do ours. We need Muslim writers and scholars who are willing to pick up where Dr. Hamidullah has left.

Ibn Rushd: (Averroes) - (1126—1198) - Great Philosopher

Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Rushd, better known in the Latin West as Averroes or Ibn Roschd, lived during a unique period in Western intellectual history, in which interest in philosophy and theology was waning in the Muslim world and just beginning to flourish in Latin Christendom. Just fifteen years before his birth, the great critic of Islamic philosophy, al-Ghazzali (1058-1111), had died after striking a blow against Muslim Neoplatonic philosophy, particularly against the work of the philosopher Ibn Sina (Avicenna).

From such bleak circumstances emerged the Spanish-Muslim philosophers, of which the jurist and physician Ibn Rushd came to be regarded as the final and most influential Muslim philosopher, especially to those who inherited the tradition of Muslim philosophy in the West.

His influential commentaries and unique interpretations on Aristotle revived Western scholarly interest in ancient Greek philosophy, whose works for the most part had been neglected since the sixth century. He critically examined the alleged tension between philosophy and religion in the Decisive Treatise, and he challenged the anti-philosophical sentiments within the Sunni tradition sparked by al-Ghazzali. This critique ignited a similar re-examination within the Christian tradition, influencing a line of scholars who would come to be identified as the “Averroists.”

Ibn Rushd contended that the claim of many Muslim theologians that philosophers were outside the fold of Islam had no base in scripture. His novel exegesis of seminal Quranic verses made the case for three valid “paths” of arriving at religious truths, and that philosophy was one if not the best of them, therefore its study should not be prohibited.

He also challenged Asharite, Mutazilite, Sufi, and “literalist” conceptions of God’s attributes and actions, noting the philosophical issues that arise out of their notions of occasionalism, divine speech, and explanations of the origin of the world. Ibn Rushd strived to demonstrate that without engaging religion critically and philosophically, deeper meanings of the tradition can be lost, ultimately leading to deviant and incorrect understandings of the divine.

Ambani Mansion on Waqf Land

New Delhi: The All India Milli Council has expressed serious concern over the growing incidence of misappropriation of waqf properties all over India and urged the central and state governments to act promptly to stop the menace.

Milli Council general secretary Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam said here today that the government at Centre and state should act promptly to stop the menacing trend of misappropriation of waqf properties.

“The latest and most highly visible case is the construction of Mukesh Ambani’s multi-storied home in Mumbai, built at a staggering cost of over $1 billion (nearly Rs 4500 crore). The Waqf land on which it has illegally been built is worth Rs 3000 crore, but the Ambanis have got it virtually for free,” he said. This is the “best example of official corruption at the cost of Muslims,” he added.

Waqf is a religious endowment made by Muslim individuals and families for the welfare of the weak, especially for purposes like education, housing and healthcare.

“Waqf properties have the potential to finance a sizeable part of the developmental needs of Muslims,” Dr. Alam asserted. The centre and states are bound by the law to protect these properties, he said.

Dr. Alam urged the Union government and Government of Maharashtra to see to it that the Ambanis got a proper lease deed on payment of an appropriate sum as well as land rentals for the lease period.

“A waqf property belongs to God and cannot be sold or bought. It can only be leased and/or rented for a specific period,” he said and urged the governments at centre and in the state to work quickly to do justice.

THE UNITED STATES

 By Dr. Mahathir Mohammed, Former Prime Minister, MALAYSIA

1. There was a time when I thought that peace had come to the world. The Cold War had ended with the forces of the righteous triumphant.

2. But alas, for the small countries of the world, there is now more fear. The great democracies of the world, headed by the United States have decided on a crusade to democratise the whole world, through violence and war where necessary.

3. I am reading Robert Fisk, a British journalist, on the great war for civilisation i.e. the war in the Middle East . In all these wars the US plays a dominant role, not as a peace maker to stop the violent conflicts between the fractious Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries but to start wars against them so as to spread democracy.

4. In Palestine , United States ' backing for Israel is unstinted, without regard for how many times and how blatant are Israel 's disregard for the international law or morality or how violent and lethal are its methods.

5. Israel built "settlements" on Palestinian land with impunity, ravaged Palestinian villages, seize their land and expelled the inhabitants, openly shot and kill children, destroying houses with their occupants still inside, jailed and tortured more than a thousand Palestinians without charges or fair trial, illegally blockaded Gaza, attacked foreign ships on mercy mission while in international waters, killing foreign personnel on board, refuses to allow the Palestinians to call their land Palestine but instead to refer to themselves only as the Palestinian Authority.

6. Robert Fisk describes the torture methods of the Israelis and this is confirmed by Amnesty International. These include sleep deprivation, squatting for hours, violent shaking, imprisonment in a cupboard, beatings, pressure on the genitals and exposure to heat and cold.

7. Why is Israel free to do all these dastardly things? It is because the US backs it all the way.

8. Even when the Israelis ran over an American woman with a tractor, killing her, the US did not protest.

9. Netanyahu, the Israeli PM ignored President Obama when the latter demanded that no more Israeli settlements be built. The US President had to eat humble pie and did nothing.

10. That is Palestine and the Palestine/Israeli conflict. Then when the New York World Trade Centre was destroyed apparently by Saudi Arabs, the United States invaded Afghanistan and Iraq . These two countries have been bombed and rocketed over and over again, their towns and villages razed to the ground. Innocent people were killed by the thousands.

11. There is no respect for borders. Towns and villages in Pakistan also experience missile attacks, strafing by aircrafts and bombing, again killing civilians.

12. In Iraq , the excuse for invasion is that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. A "shock and awe" blitzkrieg has killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians. Iraq was occupied by US forces but no weapons of mass destruction were found. This excuse was a blatant lie and the US has belatedly admitted it. Now Wikileaks exposed that Israelis and pro-Israelis "fixed" the intelligence that induced the US to war with Iraq .

13. In Palestine , Iraq and Afghanistan the killings and the destruction are still going on. But the US is not yet satisfied with the bloodbath it has initiated.

14. The next target is Iran . After their experience in Iraq there is seemingly less inclination by the US to invade Iran . Instead the method adopted is to starve the Iranians through a siege.

15. The United Nations Security Council has not approved the siege (sanctions) of Iran but the US has enough clout, influence over the countries of the world to get them to carry out its wishes.

16. Thus if the banks of any country has any dealings with Iran , the US will disallow the bank from doing business with the US . Many other arm twisting methods are used by the US to render its siege of Iran effective. The purpose of doing this is to impoverish and create difficulties for the people of Iran allegedly because of Iran 's nuclear programme but actually to punish the Iranians for the closure of the US Embassy and the detention of its staff during the civil war. Revenge is very much a part of US foreign policy.

17. Now it is the turn of North Korea . It is the US who planned and implemented military exercises in waters close to North Korea . The idea is to threaten that already poor country to submit to the US .

18. Provoked, the North Koreans fired at the South Korean island in the narrow strait between it and South Korea where the military exercise is being conducted. And then the Western media condemns North Korea for this when it was in fact America which provoked North Korea into firing their guns.

19. Presidents of countries are not safe from arrest by the US . President Noriega of Panama is now languishing in an American jail. Now President Omar Bashir is being sought by America after the International Criminal Court found him guilty in a trial in which he was not defended.

20. President Salvador Allende of Chile was assassinated through the machinations of the CIA because he was a Marxist, even though he was elected by the Chileans.

21. Nicaragua had its harbour mined by the US in 1984. The United States was found guilty by the International Court . The other countries of South America live in fear of the US .

22. In the Far East the US ensured the enmity between Japan and China is perpetuated and heightened. Rapprochement between Germany and France was possible but not between Japan and China . The US opposed the formation of the East Asia Economic Group.

23. A policy of containment of China is urged on all the countries of South East Asia . Lately the US wants to be involved in the dispute over the islands of the South China Sea . For the US the dispute provides an opportunity to involve South East Asian countries in the encirclement of China .

24. It is clear that the US is seeking to make war against the small nations of the world. The US is willing to kill hundreds of thousands of people in order to spread its influence and domination.

25. No country in the world dares to condemn the US for its bullying of small weak countries.

26. Everywhere in the world US Embassies have to be fenced and guarded. Everywhere there would be demonstrations against the US . The country is the most hated nation in the world.

27. The US should be the leading nation in the world, abiding by the decisions of the United Nations, helping the poor and the weak, enriching the world with its technology and generally creating a better world by upholding non-violent ways of settling disputes between nations.

28. It is sad that the US has chosen the ugly way just for the sake of Israel . It is sad that a country which preaches human rights, justice and freedom is the country which is most guilty of breaching all the high values that it preaches.

29. Obama, with all his promises of change has changed nothing about US warlike ways and disregard for international norms. Clearly changes of Presidents, of parties forming Governments of the US will change nothing concerning US creed and policies.

30. The capacity of the US to learn from its experiences is almost nil.

31. The world will have to be reconciled with having the most powerful country in the world remaining addicted to the gun which won it the West in the past. This great democracy is anything but democratic in its relationship with the world community.
