Tissue engineering is a new and rapidly developing biotechnology, which offers tremendous potential regarding health care for the whole world.
The aim of tissue engineering is to generate live and functional tissue substitutes for clinical applications. The first step is to select the correct type of cells, which have the potential to form tissues and organs. Second is to find or select appropriate biocompatible scaffolds for those cells to grow on. Third is to modulate cell differentiation whether by signalling modulation, growth factor interaction, biomechanical stimuli and/or gene therapy.
But the most important issue is to involve more and more scientists from different disciplines together and provide a forum for an exchange of ideas and thoughts to progress the tissue engineering field.
