         IEEE/WIC/ACM Intelligent Agent Technology 2008
                  CALL FOR PAPERS
#####################################################################

2008 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on
Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT-08)

December 9-12, 2008, Sydney, Australia

http://datamining.it.uts.edu.au/wi08/html/iat/

Sponsored By
IEEE Computer Society
Web Intelligence Consortium (WIC)
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

IAT 2008 provides a leading international forum to bring together
researchers and practitioners from diverse fields, such as computer
science, information technology, business, education, human factors,
systems engineering, and robotics, to (1) examine the design
principles and performance characteristics of various approaches in
intelligent agent technology, and (2) increase the cross-fertilization
of ideas on the development of autonomous agents and multi-agent
systems among different domains. By encouraging idea-sharing and
discussions on the underlying logical, cognitive, physical, and
sociological foundations as well as the enabling technologies of
intelligent agents, IAT 2008 will foster the development of novel
paradigms and advanced solutions in agent-based computing.

IAT 2008 will be jointly held with the 2008 IEEE/WIC/ACM International
Conference on Web Intelligence (WI-08).  The two conferences will have
a joint opening, keynote, reception, and banquet. Attendees only need
to register for one conference and can attend workshops, sessions,
tutorials, panels, exhibits and demonstrations across the two
conferences. We are also planning a joint panel, joint paper sessions,
and doctor symposium that discuss common problems in the two areas.

On-Line Submissions and Publication
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

High-quality papers in all IAT related areas are solicited.
Paper submissions should be limited to a maximum of 7 pages in the
IEEE 2-column format, the same as the camera-ready format (see the
Author Guidelines of last year at
http://www.ieeeconfpublishing.org/cpir/AuthorKit.asp?Community=CPS&Facility=CPS_Nov&ERoom=IAT+2007 ).
All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee on
the basis of technical quality,  relevance, significance, and clarity.

Note that IAT'08 will accept ONLY on-line submissions, containing
PDF versions. Please use the Submission Form on the IAT'08
website to submit your paper. Accepted papers will be published in the
conference proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press that are
indexed by EI.

Submissions accepted as regular papers will be allocated 7 pages in the
proceedings and accorded oral presentation times in the main conference.
Submissions accepted as short papers will be allocated 4
pages in the proceedings and will have a shorter presentation time at
the conference than regular papers.

All co-authors will be notified at all time, for the submission,
notification, and confirmation on the attendance. Submitting a paper
to the conference and workshops means that, if the paper is accepted,
at least one author should attend the conference to present the
paper. The acceptance list and no-show list will be openly published
on-line. For no-show authors, their affiliations will receive a
notification.

A selected number of IAT'08 accepted papers will be expanded and
revised for inclusion in Web Intelligence and Agent Systems: An
International Journal ( http://wi-consortium.org/journal.html) and in
Annual Review of Intelligent Informatics
( http://www.wi-consortium.org/annual.html)

The best paper awards will be conferred at the conference on the
authors of (1) the best research paper and (2) the best application
paper. Application-oriented submissions will be considered for the
best application paper award.

More detailed instructions and the On-Line Submission Form can be
found from the IAT'08 homepage: http://datamining.it.uts.edu.au/wi08/html/iat/.

Hi all

- In a "telegraphic style" about Web Intelligence -

There are  few top challenging objectives in the sustainable development of  the human culture, one of them is the understanding intelligence and the development of  intelligent human-supporting intelligent entities.

The web technologies is the new very promising platform for such task.

- At present, the problem of a web intelligence can be seen as:
  •  an autonomous intelligence of different portals,
  •  distributed/networked intelligence - a cooperation, e-learning supporting,
  •  and as AI technologies applied for enhancing of networking qualities.
- From the functional perspective, it can be used  for  user - portal/blog  communication, for the  satisfaction of  visitor  requests, as well as for the satisfaction of the portal/(web-site) owners.
In general, Web Intelligence can be visible or not visible for the Internet users/visitors.

- From the developers perspective, WI is an activity and research field in its initial phase of the development,
therefore, initially assumed web-based intelligence models are crucial for their implementation, application fields and range, and their usability, it means their future success.
Shortly speaking,  a well motivated model of  abstract intelligent agent and  the methodology of its goal-oriented specialization are always essential.

- From the socio-techno-cultural perspective, WI entities (such as: agent, agent organization) may
manage human information bases, knowledge bases and specific preferences bases (task-oriented) in different scales, on the different abstraction level of interest, and from different perspectives.

The socio-techno-cultural consequences of WI development is unforeseen,  we may only notice that, up to now,  any large-scale past futuristic vision  was never true, ... and we should  also remember that new promising technologies always produce new socio-cultural "pathologies".

Extending this particular viewpoint we arrive to the "kingdom of philosophy", the computational philosophy is the domain of intelligence limits simulation, as well as, the grown - as the critical aspects  of living systems, needs systemic network models, and finally, they all could be "naturally" implemented  using the web technologies.

-  All above mentioned aspects are included in the detailed topic list of  IEEE/WIC/ACM WI 2008 & Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT-08), two worldwide very challenging conferences, see below.

Best regards

Adam

A selected number of WI'08 accepted papers will be expanded and
revised for inclusion in Web Intelligence and Agent Systems: An

Globalisation is one of the major forces that have made innovation imperative for any industry. No organisation, business nor government, can afford to leave innovation to a few motivated individuals. The future of innovation revolves around the paradox of managing the unmanageable. What processes can ensure an uninterrupted flow of new creative ideas? How can we entice all employees to be part of this effort? How do we select and develop the most promising ideas? How can we speed up this process? How do we balance radical and continuous innovation? How do we manage the dependence on internal and external knowledge sources? Finding answers to these questions is crucial for the future success of innovation.

Submissions from academics, consultants and managers on innovation-related topics are strongly encouraged and should focus on the following:
- Commercialising and financing innovation
- Methods and tools for innovation

- Measuring and managing innovation

- Organisational creativity & idea generation

Hi all,

from AIA group perspective, preferences are the generic, essential and necessary element of abstract intelligent agent conceptualization. They together with information produce its intervention/action goals and, in this manner,  activate AIA. ..... (TOGA meta-theory - http://erg4146.casaccia.enea.it/wwwerg26701/gad-dict.htm). In practice, there are numerous possible preferences  systems/network models. They are domain-dependent,  meta-level dependent, viewpoint-dependent, and implementation-dependent. ...

Special issue of the ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Journal

       Representing, Learning, and Processing Preferences:
             Theoretical and Practical Challenges

            http://www.uni-marburg.de/fb12/kebi/si-ai

===================================================
Background and Scope
===================================================
The topic of preferences has recently attracted considerable attention
in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and plays an increasingly important
role in several AI-related research fields, including, e.g., agents,
constraint satisfaction, decision theory, planning, machine learning,
and argumentation. Representing and processing knowledge in terms of
preferences appears to be especially appealing from an AI perspective,
notably as it allows one to specify desires in a declarative way, to
combine qualitative and quantitative modes of reasoning and to deal
with inconsistencies and exceptions in a quite flexible manner.

Even though methods for dealing with preferences in a formal way have
been developed in research areas such as operations research, game and
decision theory, and social choice for quite a while, AI research has
made novel and complementary contributions to preference handling
during the last decade. Besides, having contemporary application
fields such as electronic auctions, e-commerce, and recommender
systems in mind, AI research has raised new problems and put emphasis
on additional aspects such as combinatorial structure of the
alternatives, algorithmic issues and complexity, and the absence of a
decision analyst in the loop (which is typical for many applications).

Despite the existence of some established representation frameworks
that allow for building and handling preference models in an effective
and tractable way, research in the preference field has remained very
active and still faces many challenges, such as comparing the
expressivity and complexity of existing modeling languages, combining
different representation modes and frameworks, supporting the
knowledge acquisition task by discovering, learning, and adapting user
preferences based on different types of feedback, handling preferences
in multi-agent systems and group decision making, and developing
efficient and theoretically sound algorithms for preference
aggregation and revision, just to mention a few.

The aim of this special issue is to provide an up-to-date picture of
the current trends in the AI research on handling user preferences.
Especially welcome are contributions that bridge the gap between the
rather particulate approaches existing so far, thereby helping to
establish a coherent theoretical foundation of preferences in AI, as
well as interdisciplinary work that combines or integrates approaches
from other fields, such as operations research, databases, or game and
decision theory.

Dear Suman,

thank you for  your interesting idea.

Cited from: http://in.news.yahoo.com/48/20081023/804/tnl-scholars-turn-to-gandhian-principles_1.html :
, "the social values are also greatly threatened by the rising greed of individuals, which is one of the basic causes of conflicts". (Gujarat Vidyapeeth Chancellor SudarshanIyengar)

"Sessions were divided into five broad categories, including history of philosophy, logic and scientific methods, metaphysics and epistemology, ethics and social philosophy and religion. Papers were presented on subjects as diverse as carvaka and materialism to memory consolidation research in cognitive neuroscience, to Kundalini Yoga and Hasya Yoga to more contemporary subjects like ethical scepticism. "

Pradhan said. "It is this optimism of Gandhi, which still keeps him relevant in the modern time of growing conflicts,"
... nice and ideal.

As every social (socio-cognitive) behavioral rule , "Non-Violence  Law"  (NVL) has its own domain-of-application, which, at present, is rather frequently confused, ill defined, and good for the manipulation of  public opinion.

- For example - about 2000 years ago, Christians in Rome applied it without any success.
...
- Of course the theme of NVL is interesting  but complex ,and its application in order to reduce terrorism  ...(?)

I think, NVL real applications may be rather authority-driven but hard to understand deeper by its followers.

We know that NVL is, in general, applicable, but in the context which is not sufficiently investigated yet from computational  socio-cognitive  and HI (High-Intelligence) perspectives (lack of formal models where it can be allocated).

- Here, application of  the TOGA meta-theory framework is possible, but who could pay for this type of research??

The key question could be: Where/when NVL is not applicable ?
If applicable for the class of situation X, then when it could be successful?

- Terrorism requires a soc-cog systemic definition too, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism

There are many types of terrorism, for example:

terrorism (domestic)
terrorism (administrative)
terrorism (military)
terrorism (political)
terrorism (religious)
terrorism (cultural)
...
as well as, in different dimension:
terrorism (psychological)
terrorism (social)
terrorism (group),
...
a coercion ...

In all , above mentioned, cases a terrorism relates to different conscious and not-conscious structures of  IPK (Information, Preferences, Knowledge) of an abstract HI agent, their different human carriers, and , ... so on.

Best regards

Adam
PS. Always, the requested final product of a sc. research should lead to the possibility of  a computer simulation/generation of the behaviors of  interest.
In the case of NVL and terrorism, we need before a sufficiently complex software shell of a socio-cognitive simulation platform, which, I suppose, does not exist yet.

I think the individual vs collective as spoken about by the scholars lead us into some kind of 'emergence' modeling in HI terms. But it would be interesting to model how individual or (limited small group) collective practice of Ahimsa (or non-violence) can indeed reduce terrorism on the whole as these scholars are theorising...what do you think?...

SAR: So from a HI perspective (the problem of) "terrorism" is ill defined, the
context not clear, the rules by which to combat (NV as an example) are also
unclear, the situations under which the agent rules such as NVL will work/won't
work is also unclear...which means from a HI perspective what we see as a "war
on terror" is actually a superficial combat of the isolated symptoms and not the
disease. What is worse is that the definition/categorisation of what is
terrorism(the disease) depends on which side of the table one is on...!!

SAR:In view of the above
I -what exists as "terrorism "is difficult to describe (if attempted seems to be
incomplete/inaccurate...)
P-If definitions are based on the table sides then ethics is in any case a big
question mark!!
K-how are we able to act...action rules such as NVL being themselves vague and
not guaranteeing any results

No wonder the abstract HI agents and their human carriers are totally helpless
against this phenomenon

AMG:Here, application of the TOGA meta-theory framework is

SAR: No idea yet, but will try to find out

AMG: PS. Always, the requested final product of a sc. research

sufficiently complex software shell of a socio-cognitive simulation platform,
which, I suppose, does not exist yet.

SAR: If it does not exist Adam, we will build one.

Supporting real time decision-making: The role of context in decision suppport on the move

Paris, France, May 8, 2008 -- The Association for Information Systems (AIS) Special Interest Group on Decision Support, Data and Knowledge Management Systems (SIG DSS), the International Society for Decision Support Systems, is organizing a workshop under the umbrella of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS-2008). The workshop theme is "Supporting real time decision-making: The role of context in decision suppport on the move." It will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Laboratoire d'Informatique de Paris 6. Please check the workshop website: http://www-poleia.lip6.fr/~brezil/RTDMC-08/.

Overview and Goals

Traditionally decision support systems (DSS) address strategic and long-term decision situations. However, due to the dynamic nature of organisations and of the environment that impose a continuous and rapid replanning, it is equally important to study a possibility of providing some support for making time-critical operational decisions in real time in a best possible way. The complexity, multiple goals and various time-critical imperatives associated with such decision support increases the importance of learning the right context for making a good choice. Organized by SIGDSS, this workshop will explore issues associated with the design and use of the real-time Decision Support Systems. The workshop will provide a forum for presentation and discussion of research regarding systems which support real-time decisions “on the move”. This includes the current state, challenges in design, theory, practice, methods and techniques, new developments, and applications of computing technologies to support extracting the context of real-time decision processes and decision-making by individuals, groups and organizations in time-critical situations. The challenges of context management as a component to knowledge management for decision making and support will be also addressed.

Workshop Topics

The workshop will focus on the role of context for time-critical decision support. In particular, we invite submissions, which address specifically the question: How extracting the context-based information can assist in real time decision support?

The other topics of interest include:

• Context-based decision-making methods and tools;

• Contextualizing information for time-critical decision making;

• Processes and procedures of extracting contextual information for decision support;

• Identifying context in the decision making/support process;

• Managing the contextualization process of decision making/support.

• Dynamic filtering of information for real-time decision making and support.

PURPOSE / HISTORY:

This set of joint conferences is the largest annual gathering of
researchers in computer science, computer engineering and applied
computing. Many of the joint conferences in WORLDCOMP are the
premier conferences for presentation of advances in their respective
fields. We anticipate to have 2,400 or more attendees from over 85
countries participating in the 2009 joint conferences.

The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research
conferences into a coordinated research meeting held in a common
place at a common time. The main goal is to provide a forum for
exchange of ideas in a number of research areas that interact. The
model used to form these annual conferences facilitates communication
among researchers from all over the world in different fields of
computer science, computer engineering and applied computing. Both
inward research (core areas of computer science and engineering) and
    outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and
applications) will be covered during the conferences.

WORLCOMP'09 will be composed of research presentations, keynote
lectures, invited presentations, tutorials, panel discussions, and
poster presentations. In recent past, keynote and/or tutorial speakers
    included: Prof. David A. Patterson (U. of California, Berkeley);
Prof. Michael J. Flynn (Stanford U.); Prof. John H. Holland
    (U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor); Prof. Brian D. Athey (U. of Michigan,
Ann Arbor), Prof. H. J. Siegel (Colorado State U.); Prof. Barry Vercoe
    (MIT); Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy (U. of California, Berkeley);
Prof. Jun Liu (Harvard U.); Dr. Jim Gettys (OLPC + developer of X
Window); Dr. Chris Rowen (President and CEO, Tensilica, Inc.); and
    many other distinguished speakers.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS:

Prospective authors are invited to submit their draft papers by
    uploading them to http://worldcomp.cviog.uga.edu/ .
Submissions must be received by Feb. 25, 2009 and they must be in
either MS doc or pdf formats (about 5 to 7 pages - single space,
font size of 10 to 12). All reasonable typesetting formats are
acceptable (later, the authors of accepted papers will be asked to
follow a particular typesetting format to prepare their papers for
    publication.)

The length of the Camera-Ready papers (if accepted) will be limited
to 7 (IEEE style) pages. Papers must not have been previously
published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. The
first page of the draft paper should include: title of the paper,
name, affiliation, postal address, and email address for each author.
The first page should also identify the name of the Contact Author
and a maximum of 5 topical keywords that would best represent the
content of the paper. Finally, the name of the conference that
the paper is being submitted to must be stated on the first page.

Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity,
impact, and soundness. Each paper will be refereed by two experts
in the field who are independent of the conference program committee.
The referees' evaluations will then be reviewed by two members of
the program committee who will recommend a decision to the chair of
the track that the paper has been submitted to. The chair will make
the final decision. Lastly, the Camera-Ready papers will be reviewed
by one member of the program committee.

PROPOSAL FOR ORGANIZING SESSIONS/WORKSHOPS:

Each session will have at least 6 paper presentations from
different authors (12 papers in the case of workshops). The
session chairs will be responsible for all aspects of their
sessions; including, soliciting papers, reviewing, selecting, ...
The names of session chairs will appear as Associate Editors in
the conference proceedings and on the cover of the books.

Proposals to organize sessions should include the following
information: name and address (+ email) of proposer, title of
session, a 100-word description of the topic of the session,

    many other distinguished speakers.

LOCATION OF CONFERENCES:

The conferences will be held in the Monte Carlo hotel, Las Vegas,
Nevada, USA (with any overflows at other near-by hotels). This is
a mega hotel with excellent conference facilities and over 3,000
rooms. It is minutes from the airport with 24-hour shuttle
service to and from the airport. This hotel has many recreational
attractions, including: waterfalls, spa, pools, sunning decks, Easy
River, wave pool, lighted tennis courts, health spa, nightly shows,
a number of restaurants, ... The negotiated room rate for
conference attendees is very reasonable. The hotel is within

In recent past, keynote and/or tutorial speakers
    included: Prof. David A. Patterson (U. of California, Berkeley);
Prof. Michael J. Flynn (Stanford U.); Prof. John H. Holland
    (U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor); Prof. Brian D. Athey (U. of Michigan,
Ann Arbor), Prof. H. J. Siegel (Colorado State U.); Prof. Barry Vercoe
    (MIT); Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy (U. of California, Berkeley);

Call for Workshop Proposals

2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Joint Conference on
Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agent Technology

(WI-IAT'09)

Milano, Italy, September 15-18, 2009

http://www.wi-iat09.disco.unimib.it/WI09/WIhome.htm
http://www.wi-iat09.disco.unimib.it/IAT09/IAThome.htm

*******************************************************************
Workshop Proposals Due: ** January 15 **, 2009

All papers accepted for workshops will be included in the Workshop
Proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society Press,
which are indexed by EI.
===================================================================

The Program Committees of the 2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Joint
Conference on Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agent Technology
(WI-IAT'09) invite proposals for Workshops. The Workshops will be held
within the Conference, September 15-18, 2009 at Milano, Italy.

The main goal of the WI-IAT'09 workshops is to stimulate and
facilitate active exchange, interaction and comparison of approaches,
methods and ideas related to specific topics, both theoretical and
applied, in the general areas related to Web Intelligence and
Intelligent Agent Technology. The workshops will provide an informal
setting where participants will have the opportunity to discuss
specific technical topics in an atmosphere that fosters the active
exchange of ideas.

The workshop organizers will be responsible for advertising the
workshop, forming the program committees, reviewing and selecting the
papers, and guaranteeing a high quality worthy of the prestige and
range of the Conference. All papers accepted for workshops will be
included in the Workshop Proceedings, which are expected to be
published by IEEE Computer Society Press and will be available at the
workshops.

The workshop organizers will also have the discretion of editing
selected papers (after their expansion and revision) into books or
special journal issues. Workshops may be full-day or half-day. A
full-day workshop should select 10-14 regular papers, while a half-day
workshop should select 5-7 regular papers, from a large number of
submissions.  Submissions accepted as workshop papers will be
allocated 4 pages in the proceedings.  The workshop organizers should
ensure the presence of authors of accepted papers at the workshops.
Optionally, the workshop may be started or concluded by a panel
focusing on interesting aspects, controversial issues, or unsolved
problems to stimulate lively, thoughtful, and thought-provoking
debate; we expect the workshop organizers to actively engage the
audience and help them gain a deeper understanding of the issues. The
goal of a panel is to debate and thus panels should always reflect
more than one point of view.

*** Workshop Topics

Each workshop subject will focus on new research challenges and
initiatives in Web Intelligence (WI) and Intelligent Agent Technology
(IAT). The workshops should provide an informal and vibrant forum for
researchers and industry practitioners to share their research results
and practical development experiences in these two fields. Suggested
workshop topics include, but are not limited to:

PURPOSE / HISTORY:

SWWS'09 is an annual research conference about semantic web and
web services. It is being held jointly (same location and dates)
with a number of other conferences (WORLDCOMP'09). WORLDCOMP is
the largest annual gathering of researchers in computer science,
    computer engineering and applied computing.

The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research topics
into a coordinated meeting held in a common place at a common time.
The main goal is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas in a number
of research areas that interact. The model used facilitates
communication among researchers from all over the world in different
fields of computer science, computer engineering and applied
computing. Both inward research (core areas of computer science and
engineering) and outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary,
and applications) will be covered during the event.

SWWS'09 and WORLDCOMP'09 will be composed of research presentations,
keynote lectures, invited presentations, tutorials, panel discussions,
and poster presentations. In recent past, keynote and/or tutorial
speakers included: Prof. David A. Patterson (U. of California,
Berkeley); Prof. Michael J. Flynn (Stanford U.); Prof. John H. Holland
    (U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor); Prof. Brian D. Athey (U. of Michigan,
Ann Arbor), Prof. H. J. Siegel (Colorado State U.); Prof. Barry Vercoe
    (MIT); Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy (U. of California, Berkeley);
Prof. Jun Liu (Harvard U.); Dr. Jim Gettys (OLPC + developer of X
Window); Dr. Chris Rowen (President and CEO, Tensilica, Inc.); and
    many other distinguished speakers.

The hotel is within
walking distance from most other attractions (recreational
    destinations, Golf courses, ...)
