June, I know there's a way to do it within iTunes without using any additional
programs, and that probably would work in XP as well. I actually did it myself a
while ago, and I ended up with a great ringtone. But I'm not sure I can remember
all the steps. If I can remember how to do it before someone else posts a
workable response to your question, I'll post again.

Good luck,

There's one thing that I've learned that hasn't been discussed as far as I
can tell:

There's plenty of advice about turning off 3G if you don't need it. It does
save a bit when you're in a 3G area. Where it really makes a difference is
when you're in an EDGE area. If 3G on, my battery life at work (3G area)
"isn't bad." When I get home (an EDGE area, unfortunately) if 3G is on, my
battery suffers greatly. I'm guessing the phone keeps searching for a 3G
connection and fails meanwhile draining the battery.

I have to agree. Since I bought the Portable SoundDock last year, we've barely
turned on the home stereo. We only have contention about whether it'll be my
iPhone or her iPod running the SoundDock. It was expensive, but I haven't
regretted buying it at all.

Yes, buy a Bluetooth that supports A2DP/Stereo profile.

Yup - the biggest battery users are:

Exchange/ActiveSync with PUSH enabled - it is CONSTANTLY connected and
waiting for changes/mail - if you have a data connection, if you turn on
Airplane mode and leave WiFi off, it will not be connected other than that
if you have a cellular connection or have WiFi on. Unless you really depend
on getting Exchange info as soon as it happens (IE even 15 minutes is too
long) there is no reason to have Push on Exchange enabled.

3G if you have a poor 3G or EDGE connection it is CONSTANTLY looking for a
3G signal.

WiFi turned on when you are not connected to WiFi and you are using your
phone, it is CONSTANTLY searching for a WiFi connection - if your phone is
"sleeping"/locked it turns Wifi off after a minute or so but once you wake
it up, it turns the WiFi radio back on.

Bluetooth turn on when you are not connected to a BT Device
(headset/handsfree/etc) - again when the phone is not locked/asleep and BT
is turned on and you are not connected to a BT Device the phone is
constantly discoverable and constantly searching for discoverable BT
devices.

Location Services/GPS use some but it is generally usage based (IE the more
you use location based Apps the more it uses the GPS, etc) but turning it
off if you don't use location based Apps will save some battery.

I have the MacBook Pro 15 from late 2008, and I absolutely love it. I had
an issue with an intermittent flickering screen, but Apple took care of
that. I sometimes can't believe i spent so much on a laptop, but I haven't
regretted it in the least.

I have an Altec Lansing inMotion Sound blade that I picked up from a Verizon
store on clearance. The sales rep recommended it over to Sony bluetooth
because of it's design, sound quality and you also could use batteries instead
of the power cord. For $29.00 I got a steal!!!!!

Shortly after I got my iPhone, I noticed that some how I had managed to get
a "screen shot" in my "Camera Roll" picture folder. I didn't know how I had
done it, and couldn't recreate it. That is until today. At some point
today, after using my phone, I was attempting to lock it by pressing the
"sleep/wake" button, and inadvertently pressed the "home" button at the same
time. I heard the shutter sound, and checked my "camera roll", and sure
enough there was a new screen shot. Just to make sure, I did it again, with
the same results. So, if you want to get a screen shot of an app, or what
ever is on your screen, press your "home" key and "sleep/wake" key at the
same time. At least this works on my 3G.

This may be old news to some, but it was quite the revelation for me. I
guess that says something about my life:-)

Ken - It took me a few weeks to discover that little option as well.  It's like
finding a ten-dollar bill in an old coat!  :)

Hi June,

I always say the best thing to do when you're frustrated by a task is to put it
away and make a drink ;-). Sorry it didn't work for you. The good news is that
your question seems to have sparked quite a bit of discussion. I'm sure someone
will come up with a method that will work for you. What you want to do CAN be
done, it's just a little involved.

ROB

June, I know there's a way to do it within iTunes without using any additional
programs, and that probably would work in XP as well. I actually did it myself a
while ago, and I ended up with a great ringtone. But I'm not sure I can remember
all the steps. If I can remember how to do it before someone else posts a
workable response to your question, I'll post again.

Good luck,
Rob

June,

What kind of computer are you using? If you have a relatively new Mac, you can
make ringtones in GarageBand. If you have a PC, you'll have to use a different
method.

Why wouldn't they turn it off? You can select that option on line. If you
have an iPhone (or any "smart" phone now they mandated) you HAVE to have a
data plan, $30 for AT&T ($29.99 on Verizon, Sprint & T-Mobile Vary). If you
have a corporate account and a smart phone you HAVE to have a Business Data
Plan $45 on AT&T ($44.99 on Verizon). Other than that, you don't have to
text messaging if you pay per message or you have it blocked. For any phone
you have to have a "base" plan and pay local, regional, state, and federal
taxes but other than that you don't have to any feature. Do they make it
easy to rack up per message, per kilobit, or per megabyte charges? YES but
if you are careful, block it, or turn it off yourself managing your profile
you can knock out the 'extras'.

If you don't want a "major" carrier you can buy one of the pre-paid services
(Metro, Boost, Virgin, etc) or one of the pre-paid convenience store phones
but you get what you pay for. As much as we bitch about AT&T's 3G network,
they do have one of the largest oldest EDGE networks.

I don't believe there's a way, at least in the U.S., to get an iPhone through
AT&T without a data plan as well as a voice plan.

I use 1P on my computer and my iPhone. You can also use it on your iPod Touch.
1P will also generate those weird passwords with uppercase/lower case and
numbers. The ones hard to remember. It's well worth it for free or whatever
they charge for it. I love it.

Do I understand correct - the iPhone app is free at this time, but to
