Time has an interesting article on the history of Napster and digital media piracy.

It’s long, but at the end is an important lesson, and I think one that offers hope for everyone on here coding and building apps:

"It turns out that there is something that can compete with free: easy."

Thanks Dustin.

The video primarily on how to set up your PC computer for testing apps on the ipad and iphone after they are built. The info provided was something I will need to know. I am still hoping to find a tutorial on building an app itself. I just want to make sure I cross all my i's and dot all my t's when I build something in Flash

I’m sorry for the cross-post, but I think this is important. I know a lot of folk follow Lifehacker and Gizmodo:

Gawker has extensive FAQs on the issue. “This weekend we discovered that Gawker Media’s servers were compromised, resulting in a security breach at Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, Jezebel, io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin, and Fleshbot,” the media site says.

Jenny, Great find!  I love the use of that dangling thing to control navigation.  I really like how YouTube is doing some creative stuff within their old boxy interface.

Keith,  OMG!  That is awesome!  I dug around the creator's YouTube page and found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CVYOCMpJRY  (note: There is also a "making of" video for that one).

Y'all

I have a AS3 code that was working for Flash CS5 on a PC. When I try to use the same code on a Mac AS3 CS5 I get an error mesage. Here is the error message.

1180 call to a possibly undefined method random

here is the actionscript 3.0

import flash.geom.ColorTransform;

var purple:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform(.75, 0, .75, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0);
var blue:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform(0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 0, 100, 0);
var green:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform(0, .75, 0, 1, 0, 75, 0, 0);
var yellow:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform(1, 1, 0, 1, 100, 100, 0, 0);
var orange:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform(1, .5, 0, 1, 75, 25, 0, 0);
var red:ColorTransform = new ColorTransform(1, 0, 0, 1, 100, 0, 0, 0);

var colorArray:Array = new Array(purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red);

var choose:Number = random(6);

colorLight_mc.transform.colorTransform = colorArray[choose];

What do I need to do to make the var choose:Number = random(6); line work on a Mac???

I think this might be as2 vs as3 rather than mac vs pc, but you can try:
var choose:Number = Math.floor(Math.random() * 6);

I can't see the color coding of my cold fusion code in code view of dreamweaver

All of the code is black and white.
Isn't there a switch out of position somewhere ??
The preferences window seems to be fine as is.

Hey Ted – I think this question might be better for the ColderFusion user group.  If it helps, the code coloring options are located in the preferences in Dreamweaver CS5.  I’m assuming they are in a similar place with Dreamweaver 8.

Thanks I thought I was working in as3.  I was referencing a as3 book while I was fiddling around righting the code. I'm kind of surprised the code works in as2

Now to get on my soapbox, it would be nice to be able to get some help like the good old Macromedia days from Flash help. The Adobe's version of help should be called  "no help at all." You either get a vague description or linked to a blog where you may find your problem and is doubtful that you actually find some help. Adobe you need to invest more that 25 cents in setting up your help section. Think of it as customer service.

Try googling movieclip

Here's a repost from the mnswf group:

Thanks for sending that Keith. Yes, RIM extended the offer, so get your apps
submitted!
Also, Adobe has an offer of their own for user groups. The details are below.
To summarize, if you just SUBMIT an application for the Playbook, you'll be
eligible for some prizes from Adobe. It also make the usergroup eligible for
some extra software/device giveaways too. Here's the official statement as well
as a link to report your application (after you've submitted it to RIM).

So AGAIN, here's the deal. We're going to raffle off a bunch of prizes to both
Adobe User Groups and to members of the groups who submit apps to the App World
between now and February 28, 2011. Here's what's available:
1) ALL user groups who have at least one app submitted get an extra software
raffle in 2011.
2) TEN individual user group members (or managers) drawn at random from all
entries get a copy of FB4 Premium.
3) THREE Grand Prize winning user groups get a new mobile device to raffle off
at an upcoming user group meeting.
So - there's prizes available both for the groups and for individuals.
TO ENTER, you need to have SUBMITTED an AIR app to Blackberry's App World AND
you need to fill out the following form. Any member of an Adobe User Group or
any group manager can enter. Multiple entries from one user group increase your
chances to win.

I'm trying to create an interactive timeline in a player .swf. The player will load other .swf files and read the loaded swf's labels into an array. For each label, a tick mark is placed (as MovieClip) along a graphic line. The desire is that when the user clicks one of these ticks, the player jumps to the frame associated with the label that tick was created for.

What I'm not able to do is get each added tick mark to behave independently of the others. Basically, each tick mark added gets the behavior of the last tick created (in this case, it gotoAndStop at the last label in the .swf).

Below is what I've got for code so far: (I'm working in a single file now - will worry about the secondary file later. Numbers will be abstracted later, too.) The .fla file simply has a bunch of frames in the timeline, a handful of labels, and a different graphic at each label.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ryan

import flash.display.FrameLabel;
import flash.display.MovieClip;

var labels:Array = this.currentLabels;

for (var i:uint = 0; i < labels.length; i++) {
    var label:FrameLabel = labels[i];
var percent:Number = (label.frame - 1) / this.totalFrames ;
    trace("frame " + label.frame + ": " + label.name + " (" + percent + ")" );
var tickX:int = 20 + percent * 510; //20 = left end of timeline. 510 = width of timeline
var tick:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
tick.graphics.lineStyle(10,0x333333);
tick.graphics.moveTo(tickX,384);
tick.graphics.lineTo(tickX,390);
addChild(tick);
function tickGo(event:MouseEvent):void
{
gotoAndStop(label.frame);
}
tick.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,tickGo);
}

var timeline:Shape = new Shape();

timeline.graphics.lineStyle(1,0x333333);
timeline.graphics.moveTo(20,390);
timeline.graphics.lineTo(530,390);

addChild(timeline);

apps, how to get started quickly and wipe away any fear or hesitation about
developing for mobile.
Designers and developers welcome.

Requirements:
Not a must, but if you could bring a laptop and install the latest Flash Builder
Burrito, it would be awesome.

Hey Ryan - You're real close. The only issue is with your click event. You
have all your tick marks calling the tickGo function on click. The only issue
is the code in the function isn't dynamic. Your function is getting changed each
time through the loop...which is why all the MovieClips always go to the last
frame. What you want to do is give each MovieClip a property (i.e. frameNumber)
so when a MovieClip is clicked, you "ask" the MovieClip which frameNumber you
should go to. Since tick is a MovieClip, you can add any properties you want.
Here's the updated code (just the loop and event). Note I moved the function
out of the loop:

for (var i:uint = 0; i < labels.length; i++) {
     var label:FrameLabel = labels[i];
     var percent:Number = (label.frame - 1) / this.totalFrames ;
     trace("frame " + label.frame + ": " + label.name <http://label.name/>  + "
(" + percent + ")" );

     var tickX:int = 20 + percent * 510; //20 = left end of timeline. 510 = width
of timeline
     var tick:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
     tick.graphics.lineStyle(10,0x333333);
     tick.graphics.moveTo(tickX,384);
     tick.graphics.lineTo(tickX,390);

     //add a variable to the tick so you can store the frame:
     tick.frame = label.frame;

     addChild(tick);
     tick.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,tickGo);
}

function tickGo(event:MouseEvent):void
{
     //Use the event object to figure out which tick was clicked:
     var currentTick:MovieClip = event.currentTarget as MovieClip;
     //goto whatever that tick's "frame" variable is equal to
     gotoAndStop(currentTick.frame);
}

I didn't verify this code worked, but it should be close.

Dustin

Brian,

Here is the article, "see Android Runtime".
It claims that every Android app. has its own virtual machine.
Isn't that a large footprint ?

Brian,

Might you share more info about loading external swf in runtime ?
Are you loading sub-application or module ?
Do you have to consider the Flex marshal plan ?
