Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce GM 2.2 the ‘Digital Landscapes’ session at EGU2012 (Vienna, 22-27 April 2012). Following a successful session last year, we look forward to seeing you at another dynamic, diverse and interesting session.

> GM 2.2 Digital Landscapes: Quantitative Interrogation and Use to Examine Geomorphic Processes

This inter-disciplinary session focuses on exciting quantitative uses of digital landscapes (DEM, DTM, DSM or point-cloud) to understand how the Earth’s surface is shaped.  Global (e.g. ASTER) to high-resolution (e.g. laser scanning, photogrammetry) data sets are welcomed as we believe developments will come through cross-fertilization of best practice and interesting method of analysis.  Possibilities (e.g. repeat surveys, real-time), problems (e.g. awkward case studies), solutions and interesting geomorphic uses from mass-wasting to volcano formation are encouraged.

A full description of the session can be found at
http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2012/session/9760

Deadline for Receipt of Abstracts: 17 January 2012

All the best

John, Paola, Susan, Paolo and David
(conveners)

p.s – Full session description below

This inter-disciplinary technical session will highlight developments driving innovation in the exciting uses of digital landscapes (DEM, DTM, or DSM) of the Earth, seafloor or planetary terrains. It aims to bring together ‘users’ analysing digital landscapes to exhibit the best methods and computational techniques, cross-fertilize best practice, and illustrate what can be achieved and what challenges remain. Possibilities (e.g. innovations), problems (e.g. awkward case studies), solutions and interesting geomorphic uses are encouraged.

We believe that objective, robust and reproducible quantitative methods underpin our ability to unlock the potential wealth of new insights into geomorphic processes recorded in DEMs.

Much interest is expected in high-resolution DEMs, but any data source (e.g. laser scanning, SAR, photogrammetry, satellite-derived) is welcome. Fusion between topographic data and other measurements is in scope.

In geomorphic processes we include both natural processes and those creating a human fingerprint in the landscape. Features identified or parameterised could include volcanoes, craters, gullies, fault scarps, drumlins, or those reflecting anthropogenic disturbances such as deforestation, new urban areas, or land-use change. Natural processes constrained could range from mass-wasting to volcano formation, and from flooding to sedimentary deposition.

We encourage early stage researchers to present their studies

Dear OpenTopography community,
Thank you for sharing our enthusiasm for high resolution topography! We
hope that you are finding OpenTopography useful. As you know, the goal of
OT is to be a portal to high-resolution topography data and related tools.
Over the past two years we have quadrupled the amount of data we host, and
are adding new data weekly. We've also established memoranda of
understanding for data distribution with the NSF National Center for
Airborne Laser Mapping, the NSF Critical Zone Observatories, the Tahoe
Regional Planning Authority, and several other groups. We are also engaged
in numerous formal and informal strategic partnerships that have resulted
in new datasets and tools being available through OT. On the outreach and
training front, we have lead a number of airborne and terrestrial LiDAR
workshops, built a strong social media presence, established the
OpenTopography Tool Registry, and provided advice on many lidar and
geoinformatics projects. In the process, OT has grown to a community of
over 1500 registered users plus countless users who access data and
resources as a guest. If you have not been to the OT site for a while, we
encourage you to check it out!

We are proud of these achievements and the science, engineering, planning,
and education they have enabled. We are also excited for the future of
OpenTopography. OpenTopography is funded jointly by the Instrumentation
and Facilities program of the Earth Science Division, the Office of
Cyberinfrastructure, and the Computer and Information Science and
Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation. In January
2012 we have to submit a renewal proposal to continue OpenTopography
operations after September 2012. We need your help to make sure that our
NSF colleagues and reviewers really appreciate the impact OT has had, and
that they understand the need to provide strong sustained funding for
online access to Earth science lidar data. Recall that your acknowledgment
of OpenTopography support also provides a measure of OpenTopographys
success and will help to ensure continued funding.

As we prepare our proposal, we would like to gather some information from
you--our user community. Please take the following survey
(https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OpenTopography) by January 1st so that we
can incorporate responses into our renewal proposal to the NSF.

Thanks again,

-The OpenTopography Team

Has anyone come across or developed a software that takes in a large set of

Hi Sanj,

This is what is done in standard airborne lidar processing tools like TerraScan from TerraSolid (). Perhaps a way forward for you to get your hands on free tools is to explore what software is discussed on the http://www.opentopography.org/ website which distributes NSF/public-agency-paid US lidar datasets.

Hope this helps

Greetings!

I am a graduate student under the direction of Dr. Ramon Arrowsmith in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University.

For the next few weeks, we are conducting a research study with Dr. Rockwell at San Diego State University to test the repeatability, accuracy, and precision of lateral displacement measurements derived from high-resolution topographic Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data.  The study is designed for users of all geologic backgrounds, so we cordially invite you, your colleagues, students, and friends to take a few minutes and help us validate our measurement methods.  All are welcome to participate, so please pass this message to anyone you think may be interested.  The deadline for submissions is March 16th.

Your participation will involve a brief introduction to one of three measurement methods, measuring ten offset features, and completing a brief experience questionnaire.  You may choose to use more than one measurement method if you like.   Any contributions you can make are greatly appreciated.  The surveys, along with more background information, can be found at:

http://stockdale.sese.asu.edu/Validation/validationindex.html

Your measurement estimates will aid in the development of methods used to assess the effects of earthquake ruptures.  All results will be kept confidential, and responses will be tied to an identifier rather than to a name.  The results of this study may be used in reports, presentations, or publications.

If you have any questions concerning the research study or are interested in using it as a classroom activity, please contact Barrett Salisbury via email at jbsalisb@....

Cheers, and thank you for your time!

TIME-GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SCIENCE: A WORKSHOP ON TIME-GEOGRAPHY

GIScience 2012 Conference

Columbus, OH, USA - 18 September 2012

Enabled by new (geo)computational techniques and approaches, we are currently witnessing a resurgence of interest in both research papers as well as project methodologies that draw on the original concepts and theories from Time-Geography.

This workshop aims to bring together researchers applying Time-Geographic concepts in their research in the multidisciplinary context of GIScience.

Topics of this workshop include, but are not limited to:

§ Analytical extensions of the Time-Geographic framework

§  Innovative Time-Geographic methods addressing the problems of movement, transport and interaction

§  Scalability - how to operationalise aggregation and generalisation of space-time paths

§  Spatio-temporal data models for implementing Time-Geographic approaches

§  GIS-based methods for comparison of multiple space-time paths which explicitly consider spatial and temporal dimensions

§  Data sources (including VGI), data quality/resolution issues, and ‘models vs. real-world data’

Subject: Find best locations to put cameras for dam surveillance
koh70
Send Email Send Email

Hi all,

Does anybody has any ideas about what would be needed (data, software and
spatial analysis techniques) to determine best locations
to mount cameras for dam surveillance. The surveillance has 2 components to it:

1) ice thickness around the dam (has the potential to destroy the dam's blades)
2) dam safety in general and also people trying to access the dam to steel
copper.

Up until now, camera locations have been determined using an old-fashioned way,
i.e. being on site and doing some visual reconnaissance and deciding on a place
where to mount the devices (monitoring is done remotely through wireless
transmission).

Is there a better/scientific way to approach this, for instance using GIS? Could
DEM derivatives such as Line-of-Sight and Viewshed analysis be useful for this?

Thanks in advance for any idea/help help.
Oumar

Θέμα: Release of BRAT v3.1.0
Προς: <brat_helpdesk@...>

Dear User,

You downloaded the Basic Radar Altimetry Toolbox in the past.

A new release, 3.1.0, of the Basic Radar Altimetry Toolbox is now available, with improvements with respect to v3.0

You can access it through a simplified form at:

http://www.altimetry.info/html/data/update_installer_en.html (Installer downloads)

or

http://www.altimetry.info/html/data/update_sources_en.html (Source download)

Improvements :

                - Addition of an "aliases" capability, that enables users to use the same names for the most frequent data fields.

                - Addition of an index (brat_index_data) for data with a "time" dimension (i.e. not available for some data, like grids).

                - Addition of filters algorithms (four different filters have been implemented), working along-track or on grids.

                - The call to the geostrophic velocity algorithms is modified to use the aliases for longitude and latitude, to make things simpler for users.

                - Updated CODA to version 2.3.1.

                - Internal (CODA) product type names for ERS product types have been aligned with ESA naming convention (OPR_pass_file -> ALT.OPR, WAP -> ALT.WAP)

                - Updated CryoSat product format (codadef) to be in line with upcoming L1 PFS v4.9 and L2 PFS v2.8. Main changes impacting BRAT are:

. The field for the main dataset in the FDM product is now called 'siral_l2_fdm_mds' instead of 'siral_l2_fdo_mds'

. usr_corr field now has a scale factor of 1e-15 instead of 1e-7

(complete list at http://www.altimetry.info/documents/brat/README_ChangeLog_3.1.0.txt )

We hope you will appreciate this new version,

Don’t hesitate to contact us for any question/request,

Best regards,

The BRAT development team.

Hi,

Knowing that some of you struggle like I do to compute planimetric aspects of
your vector layers using opensource easy-to-use (without much explicit
code)software, here´s a nice solution (e.g., watershed morphometry).

use Orbisgis (Java + SQL).
Input your shapefile (see manual).
Find the function.
Drag it to put code in the SQL console.
Put the name of your SHP in the code and click run.

e.g., to create the minimum bounding circle for each ID of "yourshapefilename".

Create Table BoundingCircle as select ST_BoudingCircle (the_geom)from
yourhshapefilename;

Its really fast.
Thanks to Orbisgis team.
Best,
Marco
