... I'm skeptical of these supposed quality loss issues. That is not the core of your problem, but it might be part of the answer. The quickest solution

To force a movie to open in QuickTime 7, drag your movie file onto its application icon. I added it to my Dock, next to QTX, and often drag files to it there

I did the conversion to avoid the resolution loss with iMovie 09 and DV... Converting to Photo-jpeg fools iMovie into not deinterlacing. I had already captured
