animated short movie in one and a half month<<

It's way possible. I've done several 5-minute episodes of kids'
TV in less than a week each, single-handed. The only existing
components were the five main characters, and sometimes I
had to model as many as three new characters and rig them
simply. I found it best to throw myself at it without thinking about
it - no storyboards, no layouts, 18-hour days. I did the dopesheets
from the voice track first - unless I was given raw audio and had to
edit the voice track myself. Then I set up the shots consecutively,
with the characters in position. Then I animated them doing the junk
in the script. Then I went back in and built sets and props around the
action, which can make stuff look more carefully choregraphed than
it is. Then I forwarded the shots to the studio's render farm. While
they were rendering, I did a 320X240 quick-render of the show for
myself. I used that to put in foley and the soundtrack score, which I
also composed for each show. I mastered the audio for broadcast,
and forwarded that to the studio.

It's a horrible way to work, and it's been a few years since I've had
to produce video that quickly. No matter how good you are, it's hard
to do adequate work at that speed. All that stuff was done in
Lightwave 5.6, with which character animation was much more
difficult than in current versions.

About 60% of the shots in my online demo were produced under the
above conditions with 5.6. The obviously more complex shots were
done more slowly with newer software.

Animation demo:
http://www.frankpanucci.com/ANIMATION/DEMO.htm
(the stampede shots were done with Lightwave 5.6 - but I had a 6-week
deadline for that episode)

Hi everybody,
I'm trying to upgrade one of my licenses from 8.0 to 8.5, it has a parallel
dongle, and 8.0 opens fine, both LW and Modeler, when I try to run the 8.5
upgrade file, it reports that the sentinel dongle is missing, and can't install,
I ran again the setup for the sentinel driver, the one in the "Sentinel" folder
inside the LW instalation folder, and did a repair, but, still, won't upgrade.
Anyone had this problems that could offer an advidce?
Thanks.

am the only one, and am not so good in texturing. any advice on how to speed
things up and what kind of lighting setup will i use. please keeping in mind,
its a futuristic setting. thanks for the feedback already guys.

Larry <larrys@...> wrote: Is this a personal project or a
paying project?
Things you should keep in mind:
You need to carefully storyboard it out. As it is you have 45 days to
do 120 seconds of animation. Thats roughly 3 seconds of animation per
day ONLY if youre doing animation. You need to also allocate time to
model, texture, rig and light as well as render. All of this will cut
down on the time you have to animate. You also need to think about the
production quality The better you want it to look the more time you
need. How good are your modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting and
animation skills?

Storyboarding and all that is a given but you also need to plan out
how much time youre going to spend on each of the things I mentioned.
I would also think about cheating as much of it anywhere you can. Beg,
borrow or purchase as much of the assets as you can. This is a lot of
work even for someone who reallly knows LW inside and out and is an
experienced artist. The bottom line is if youre going to do this to
promote yourself or something else you need to do it right.

-Larry
>
> how possible do you guys think it is to create a 2minute cg animated
short movie in one and a half month. what would u guys do. i need u
guys advice cos it seems i am in that sort of situation. would have to
remove radiosity, use ambient, i think!!. the scene has a futuristic
setting, more of robots(walkers), buildings with flying vehicles and
possibly one caricatured human. the concept is more like the walkers
chasing the human, and he seems to appear everywhere on cameras, e.t.c
more like public enemy no1. what would i have to do to achieve a
decent production in that kind of space. worst of all it is only me
right now.

I used the Mirage USB key to update Sentinel, for use with LW8.x.
Although, I use a Rainbow Technologies folder on C: but use a
parallel dongle for 8.5 on the VT system.

Could someone please post a short tutorial on this for any LW version?

I have not figured it out. Nor have I gotten any help from Newtek. My work flow
includes several other machines running 32 bit LW8.3, so I've worked around
problem of no scene preview playback by using old systems. As far as I can tell,
everything else on my 64bit OS is working properly, and I like the rendering
times with dual dual core opteron 270's.
Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I'm awaiting LW9 that I've pre-paid. I'm
disappointed in Newtek's help.

Interesting problem, but since it up scales something, have you
unchecked the read only of the images or avi in their properties?

Thanks...Does Rhino also convert .dwf ? Client sent a .dwf file which I was
able to view using an Autodesk DWF viewer but I can't find anything to convert
it.

   DXF LightWave can load directly.

I have in the past used Rhino to convert DWG files to LWO

Just ask the customer for a dxf file. They can just save that right out of
AutoCAD.

I'm not sure what type of electromagnet you're going for, but if you're
trying to make a wire coil around a straight cylinder like a nail or
something similar, you can use the bend tool in modeler. It's been around
for as long as I can remember. It may not be the most accurate way to model
a coil, but I think it's one of the easiest.

First create a long wire by creating a tall slender disk in the top view.
Make sure the cylinder (wire) has enough segments to deform nicely. You can
probably get away with a 24 sided disk and enough segments to make the
polygons look square. It depends on how close-up you're going to render.

Slighty rotate the wire about 20 degrees in the front or back view so that
is looks like it's leaning to the side.

Zoom in a little so that you can see one end of the wire and the details of
the polygons

Select the bend tool in the modify menu and click and drag downward in the
top view until the wire coils around to your desired number of turns. If
your coil looks like it's wider on one side than the other, without letting
go of the mouse button, slide the mouse to the left or right until it's
straight.

You can vary the angle of the turns by how much rotate the wire before you
bend it.

This will get you started with the wire turns. I'm not sure how I'd deal
with the lines of force I'd need a little more info on what you're trying to
illustrate and if they'd be animated or not. If the camera's not moving I
might do the lines of force in after effects. Again it depends on the look
you're going for.

I Hope this helps,

Rich

I've just got an email flyer from Kurv saying LW9 is out.
I've pre-ordered the upgrade and haven't heard anything from Newtek about
a release so is this a premature email from Kurv or have NewTek suddenly
released LW9 early?

Cheers,
Bliz::..

I'd put my money on a premature mailing. I think 9 will be with us
around the 16th if the launch party invitations I have read about on
various forums are anything to go by!

Hope so, I am now officially board with the uninstall.re-install routine
of the LW betas/RCs :)

Thanks all...Rhino seems to be the answer. I'm sure it will solve many other
conversion issues we have struggled with in the past.

Does anyone have any advice on how to replicate the look of theater
drapery...hung full across the batton and pulled back with a sash or
similar? I have posted an image of the look I am going for in the Files
section...drape template.jpg I have tried sveral methods but I can't
get the natural weight of the fabric to show itself in the curves...it
always looks modeled...just doesn't flow.

TIA

Model in layout using clothfx.
Give that are some redness in a weight map, keeping it green on those
areas to stay. Run a sim. Save a few as endomorphs. One of them
should work well for that weight look.

There's a few methods you can try -

First, you can create a spline curve in the shape of the drapery,
then extrude it. From there, use tools like Magnet to pinch and push it.
Or, place bones in it to move and form it in Layout.

Another way is to create a big flat subdivided mesh.
Take every other row of vertical points, then pull them forward (or
back).
Press the tab key for subpatch mode. Then again, use various tools
to shape (dragnet is a good one). Or, use bones in Layout.

A bigger issue with theatre drapes is the surfacing. You can use
a luminous texture with a gradient to get that 'fuzzy' look.
