Subject: New Research on Nanotechnology & Environment

Dear colleagues,

I thought you might find this new research on
nanotechnology & the environment to be of interest.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Myrup
~~~~~~
Environmental gains derived from the use of
nanomaterials may be offset in part by the
process used to manufacture them, according to
research published in a special issue of the Journal of Industrial Ecology.
The
<http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/jie>Journal
of Industrial Ecology is a peer-reviewed
bimonthly owned by Yale University, headquartered
at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental
Studies and published by Wiley-Blackwell.
The special issue is available for free download
at <www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/jie-nano>.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
----------------------------------------
Special Issue of J. of Industrial Ecology:
Nanomaterials May Have Large Environmental Footprint
According to a paper by Hatice Sengül and
colleagues at the University of Illinois at
Chicago, strict material purity requirements,
lower tolerances for defects and lower yields of
manufacturing processes may lead to greater
environmental burdens than those associated with
conventional manufacturing. In a study of carbon
nanofiber production, Vikas Khanna and colleagues
at The Ohio State University found, for example,
that the life cycle environmental impacts may be
as much as 100 times greater per unit of weight
than those of traditional materials, potentially
offsetting some of the environmental benefits of
the small size of nanomaterials.
Materials engineered at dimensions of 1 to 100
nanometers (1 to 100 billionths of a meter)
exhibit novel physical, chemical and biological
characteristics, opening possibilities for
stunning innovations in medicine, manufacturing
and a host of other sectors of the economy.
Because small quantities of nanomaterials can
accomplish the tasks of much larger amounts of
conventional materials, the expectation has been
that nanomaterials will lower energy and resource
use and the pollution that accompanies them. The
possibility of constructing miniature devices
atom-by-atom has also given rise to expectations
that precision in nanomanufacturing will lead to
less waste and cleaner processes. Research
described in this special issue suggests that
these anticipated benefits remain to be realized.
Other topics explored in the special issue include:
     * Approaches for identifying and reducing the
life cycle hazards of nanomaterials
     * Quantified life cycle energy requirements
and environmental impacts from nanomaterials
     * Tradeoffs between nanomanufacturing costs
and occupational exposure to nanoparticles
     * Efficiency of techniques for nanomaterials synthesis
     * Improvement of the sustainability of
bio-based products through nanotechnology
     * Industrial frameworks for responsible nanotechnology
     * Industrial and public perception about the
risks and benefits of nanomaterials
     * Governance and regulation of nanotechnology
Industrial ecology is a field that examines the
opportunities for sustainable production and
consumption, emphasizing the importance of a
systems view of environmental threats and remedies.
Roland Clift, Professor of Environmental
Technology in the Centre for Environmental
Strategy at the University of Surrey and Shannon
Lloyd, Principal Research Engineer in the
Sustainability & Process Engineering Directorate
at Concurrent Technologies Corporation, served as
guest editors. Support for this special issue was
provided by the Educational Foundation of
America, in Westport, Conn., and the Project on
Emerging Nanotechnologies of the Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.
             Hi,
Interestingly, I noticed an article on nano worms to treat cancer. I doubt if
the technology used in a nano technology. But it sounds very interesting.. . Its
in the below location:-
Could anyone let me know if this is really to do with nano technology?
The is week I disovered som,e material form on old expeiment and
tested it for its' adhesive properties and it stuck hard to oral
muocsa.
Our patented nanotube adhesive is now available. Contact us by e-
mail for quotes.
Vulvox announces a  breakthrough in materials science; The story and
photos of our completely novel material can be viewed by clicking
the "Nanotube Adhesive" link on the navigation bar. Vulvox has been
granted  patent pending (USPTO number 61069147) on the material.
NANOTUBE ADHESIVE UPDATE !!!
We have discovered an extremely simple and inexpensive process to
manufacture carbon nanotube adhesives.  This discovery is a
breakthrough that will beat the price all competitors offer their
products at. We will continue to work on it and add it to our patent
portfolio.
I agree with Mohammad.  This needs clarification.
However, one very ‘outside’/ ‘uneducated’ observation.  In any case this
will force a greater understanding of thermodynamics.
PURPOSE / HISTORY:
    This set of joint conferences is the largest annual gathering of
    researchers in computer science, computer engineering and applied
    computing.  Many of the joint conferences in WORLDCOMP are the
    premier conferences for presentation of advances in their respective
    fields.  We anticipate to have 2,400 or more attendees from over 85
    countries participating in the 2009 joint conferences.
    The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research
    conferences into a coordinated research meeting held in a common
    place at a common time.  The main goal is to provide a forum for
    exchange of ideas in a number of research areas that interact.  The
    model used to form these annual conferences facilitates communication
    among researchers from all over the world in different fields of
    computer science, computer engineering and applied computing.  Both
    inward research (core areas of computer science and engineering) and
    outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and
    applications) will be covered during the conferences.
    WORLCOMP'09 will be composed of research presentations, keynote
    lectures, invited presentations, tutorials, panel discussions, and
    poster presentations.  In recent past, keynote and/or tutorial speakers
    included: Prof. David A. Patterson (U. of California, Berkeley);
    Prof. Michael J. Flynn (Stanford U.); Prof. John H. Holland
    (U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor); Prof. Brian D. Athey (U. of Michigan,
    Ann Arbor), Prof. H. J. Siegel (Colorado State U.); Prof. Barry Vercoe
    (MIT); Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy (U. of California, Berkeley);
    Prof. Jun Liu (Harvard U.); Dr. Jim Gettys (OLPC + developer of X
Dear colleagues,
I thought you might find this new research on
nanotechnology & the environment to be of interest.
Environmental gains derived from the use of
nanomaterials may be offset in part by the
process used to manufacture them, according to
research published in a special issue of the Journal of Industrial Ecology.
The
<http://www.blackwel lpublishing. com/jie>Journal
of Industrial Ecology is a peer-reviewed
bimonthly owned by Yale University, headquartered
at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental
Studies and published by Wiley-Blackwell.
The special issue is available for free download
at <www.interscience. wiley.com/ journal/jie- nano>.
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -
Special Issue of J. of Industrial Ecology:
Nanomaterials May Have Large Environmental Footprint
According to a paper by Hatice Sengül and
colleagues at the University of Illinois at
Chicago, strict material purity requirements,
lower tolerances for defects and lower yields of
manufacturing processes may lead to greater
environmental burdens than those associated with
conventional manufacturing. In a study of carbon
nanofiber production, Vikas Khanna and colleagues
at The Ohio State University found, for example,
that the life cycle environmental impacts may be
as much as 100 times greater per unit of weight
than those of traditional materials, potentially
offsetting some of the environmental benefits of
the small size of nanomaterials.
Materials engineered at dimensions of 1 to 100
nanometers (1 to 100 billionths of a meter)
exhibit novel physical, chemical and biological
characteristics, opening possibilities for
stunning innovations in medicine, manufacturing
and a host of other sectors of the economy.
Because small quantities of nanomaterials can
accomplish the tasks of much larger amounts of
conventional materials, the expectation has been
that nanomaterials will lower energy and resource
use and the pollution that accompanies them. The
possibility of constructing miniature devices
atom-by-atom has also given rise to expectations
that precision in nanomanufacturing will lead to
less waste and cleaner processes. Research
described in this special issue suggests that
these anticipated benefits remain to be realized.
Other topics explored in the special issue include:
* Approaches for identifying and reducing the
life cycle hazards of nanomaterials
* Quantified life cycle energy requirements
and environmental impacts from nanomaterials
* Tradeoffs between nanomanufacturing costs
and occupational exposure to nanoparticles
* Efficiency of techniques for nanomaterials synthesis
* Improvement of the sustainability of
bio-based products through nanotechnology
* Industrial frameworks for responsible nanotechnology
* Industrial and public perception about the
risks and benefits of nanomaterials
* Governance and regulation of nanotechnology
Industrial ecology is a field that examines the
opportunities for sustainable production and
consumption, emphasizing the importance of a
systems view of environmental threats and remedies.
Roland Clift, Professor of Environmental
Technology in the Centre for Environmental
Strategy at the University of Surrey and Shannon
Lloyd, Principal Research Engineer in the
Sustainability & Process Engineering Directorate
at Concurrent Technologies Corporation, served as
guest editors. Support for this special issue was
provided by the Educational Foundation of
America, in Westport, Conn., and the Project on
Emerging Nanotechnologies of the Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.
PURPOSE / HISTORY:
    CSC'09 is an annual research conference about scientific computing.
    It is being held jointly (same location and dates) with a number of
    other conferences (WORLDCOMP'09).  WORLDCOMP is the largest annual
    gathering of researchers in computer science, computer engineering
    and applied computing.
    The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research topics
    into a coordinated meeting held in a common place at a common time.
    The main goal is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas in a number
    of research areas that interact.  The model used facilitates
    communication among researchers from all over the world in different
    fields of computer science, computer engineering and applied
    computing.  Both inward research (core areas of computer science and
    engineering) and outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary,
    and applications) will be covered during the event.
    CSC'09 and WORLDCOMP'09 will be composed of research presentations,
    keynote lectures, invited presentations, tutorials, panel discussions,
    and poster presentations.  In recent past, keynote and/or tutorial
    speakers included: Prof. David A. Patterson (U. of California,
    Berkeley); Prof. Michael J. Flynn (Stanford U.); Prof. John H. Holland
    (U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor); Prof. Brian D. Athey (U. of Michigan,
    Ann Arbor), Prof. H. J. Siegel (Colorado State U.); Prof. Barry Vercoe
    (MIT); Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy (U. of California, Berkeley);
    Prof. Jun Liu (Harvard U.); Dr. Jim Gettys (OLPC + developer of X
    Window); Dr. Chris Rowen (President and CEO, Tensilica, Inc.); and
    many other distinguished speakers.
LOCATION OF CONFERENCES:
    The conferences will be held in the Monte Carlo hotel, Las Vegas,
    WORLDCOMP is the largest annual gathering of researchers in computer
    science, computer engineering and applied computing.
    The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research topics
    into a coordinated meeting held in a common place at a common time.
    The main goal is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas in a number
    of research areas that interact.  The model used facilitates
    communication among researchers from all over the world in different
    fields of computer science, computer engineering and applied
    computing.  Both inward research (core areas of computer science and
    engineering) and outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary,
    and applications) will be covered during the event.
    MSV'09 and WORLDCOMP'09 will be composed of research presentations,
    keynote lectures, invited presentations, tutorials, panel discussions,
    and poster presentations.  In recent past, keynote and/or tutorial
    speakers included: Prof. David A. Patterson (U. of California,
    Berkeley); Prof. Michael J. Flynn (Stanford U.); Prof. John H. Holland
    (U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor); Prof. Brian D. Athey (U. of Michigan,
    Ann Arbor), Prof. H. J. Siegel (Colorado State U.); Prof. Barry Vercoe
    (MIT); Prof. Ruzena Bajcsy (U. of California, Berkeley);
    Prof. Jun Liu (Harvard U.); Dr. Jim Gettys (OLPC + developer of X
    Window); Dr. Chris Rowen (President and CEO, Tensilica, Inc.); and
    many other distinguished speakers.
LOCATION OF CONFERENCES:
    The conferences will be held in the Monte Carlo hotel, Las Vegas,
    Nevada, USA (with any overflows at other near-by hotels).  This is
    a mega hotel with excellent conference facilities and over 3,000
    rooms.  It is minutes from the airport with 24-hour shuttle
    service to and from the airport.  This hotel has many recreational
    attractions, including: waterfalls, spa, pools, sunning decks, Easy
    River, wave pool, lighted tennis courts, health spa, nightly shows,
    a number of restaurants, ...  The negotiated room rate for
    conference attendees is very reasonable.  The hotel is within
    walking distance from most other attractions (recreational
    destinations, Golf courses, ...)
Northeastern University's EntreTech Forum December meeting is on:
Nanotechnology - Timing Is Everything : knowing when to start
commercializing academic research projects.
December 16, 2008
Meeting Overview
The recent and rapid development of Nanotechnology is poised to be
one of the most significant developments in science of the emerging
century.  As a class of technology, it is unusally cross-
disciplinary.  Current applications in advanced sensor, diagnostic
and materials technologies merely hint at many thousands of potential
future uses.
Metro-Boston's tech-oriented university infrastructure has pioneered
and powered the development of advanced nanotech research locally,
but it is in the commercial applications derived from that research
that nanotech's future promise resides.
The EntreTech Forum's December 16th panel focuses on Nanotech
commercialization, and brings together some of the region's nanotech
thought leaders to help the audience outline the present and future
of nanotechnology, with particular interest in the supporting role
player by the region's academic infrastructure.
Moderator:
Professor Ahmed Busnaina, Northeastern University
Panelists:
F. Mark Modzelewski, Technology Entrepreneur
Invited Panelists:
