Has anyone heard when the reducer lens will be available.
After checking a number of web sites it appears that no one has them in stock.
Some sites
do list that they will be available in 30 days or spring of 2005.

thanks for the reply( i was on vacation)
wouldnt the barlow make the magnification too high? and distort the image.
What is prime focus? and what is gain?

sorry, im tring to learn alot in a short period.

Are you using a 8i?

There are a whole bunch of things that need to be addresed when trying
to use the imager.  If your doing your imaging at F10 (ie Prime focus),
you will need to shorten the exposure and adjust the gain.  I have
found that using a barlow helps alot.  Of course then you have to
readjust the exposure and the gain.   I have used both a 2x and a 2.8
times barlow.

Basically the barlow changes the f ratio and reduces the number of
photons hitting the ccd. Play around with it.  Also be sure to take
alot of frames.  And then use the registax software.  I discovered
that no matter how crummy my avi file looked that once I processed
with registax  I would get alot more detail.

I have done film and CCD work prior to using this imager and so
far I have been very pleased with the results even though I am still
learning.... See my images under aastrogeek...

One final thing, be sure that your PC video display is upto the specs
on the imager documentation.  I did a test using my old lap top and a
newer one.  I pointed the scope at the top of a distant mountain.
And the resolution of the monitor made a huge difference on the
clarity of the imager real time image... I am considering getting a
newer PC for the observatory  as a result....

All using a Barlow does is increase the F Ratio...

What is key is trying to make each pixel of the camera handle fewer
photons. When doing CCD work on DSO you try to match the CCD to the
scope, however planetary is different as you want to give each pixel
less light and change your exposure to account for it. In this way
you will get alot more resolution. At some point this will not work
as you will not beable to get good enough resloution to image but I am
pretty sure your safe at F20 - F30. So using a barlow make it
possible to see more detail... Experiment and you will see what I am
talking about.

Prime focus means not doing any thing to the optical train to increase
the magnification. That is all. Basically your using your scope at
its normal focal length. In my experience with a 8 inch SCT a prime
focus image of the moon loks about like using a 32 mm 50 degree
eyepiece...

gain is a setting on the AMCAP softare. You go into the setting and
turn off the defaults. You can then change the # frames and the gain
to get a better focus. If the gain is too high you over expose the
image. If gain is too low it is like the object is not in the
eyepiece.... For Saturn play with the gain and the exposure time
until you get the most reasonable looking image. Be sure to get focus
first but sometimes this is hard to do without adjusting the
gain and the exposure period...

i got my first saturn and jupiter images on saturday night. the images are very fuzzy. i was hoping for a little more crisp images but i will experiment.

does a focal reducer do the same as a barlow?

Hi everybody,
I had the opportunity to compare the SAC7a with the Neximage camera
last night. I have suspected that the SAC7 was capable of a finer
resolution with the use of the Astrovideo software but was not sure so
I put them in a side to side test. I tried to even things as best as
possible with the same number of stacked photos and post-processing.
I feel that this probably is not a camera but a software difference.
The astrovideo software doesn't reveal as much of a "grainy" appearance
as did the AMCap. The true test will be when I am able to use the
neximage with the astrovideo software to see if this in fact the case.
I had problems using the SAC7a with the AMCap software so I had to
abort that means of comparison. Please see the link below for photos.

Jeff,

Two weeks ago I tried as you to find the reducer lens.

The std answer seems to be 30 days. I went ahead and pre-ordered it
from "www.optcorp.com" agreeing that actually placing an order might
help me get it by providing some sort of "clout" to the vendor to get
it for "orders in hand". Even it that doesn't work well I can always
hope.

Jeff,

As a follow on to my comment yesterday.....Oceanside Photo and
Telescope mentioned to me for the heftier price of $65 the SAC
reducer is an alternative that is BETTER than the NexImage reducer
because it is adjustable to f/3 and f/5. I am considering it rather
than waiting forever for Celestron on its fixed focal length reducer.

Hi, folks!!

I currently own an Orion Skyquest XT 4.5 dob, and I'm thinking about
picking up a NexImage. Has anyone used theirs with this type of
scope?? Any successes?? Are the planets bright enough for enough
frame grabs with a dob?? I'm sure the moon won't be a problem, but the
planets will be a bit trickier, methinks!!

Thanks,

I had to do the same with my camera. I started to use it on Jan
1st
and took some really great shots of Saturn. Then the problems
started. Several were worked out with help from their webmaster.
But
what stopped me cold... was when I started to get an error message
saying "can not decompress AVI file". I had to send it back for
Celestron to figure it out. Ater four weeks, they gave up and will
send a new one out.

So from the middle of Jan to now, no camera...almost four months
without being able to shoot... and no idea when they will have one to
send to me... would be several more monthes.

Makes you want to pack up and give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A focal reducer (FR) does the opposite of the Barlow. For example I
have a f6.3 reducer for my f10 scope som what this does is make my
field of view wider because the f-ratio is now f 6.3. I usually us a
FR to
make larger object fit onto the CCD or film. Say you want to image
the moon. Using a FR would allow you to image larger chunks at a time
meaning you need fewer images to complete a full mosaic.

A mosaic is when you take several images and piece them together.

You do not need a FR to do planetary imaging...

Now you could use a FR in cmbination with a Barlow.

Say you only have a 5X barlow. You could use a .6 FR and the 5X
barlow on a F10 scope to get your final image to F30...
But I think this is a very rare case (impractical case)...

Next time there is a full moon I may try to use my F3.3 FR with the
camera to image just to see what happens...

Wade,

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about doing the same thing. Not
sure who I'll order from yet and with the acquisition who knows when
they will start shipping.

Wade,

Again, thanks for the info and good idea. When I have time I'll check
this out. Do you know if it will screw on like the Celestron reducer?

Thanks

Not much time to image Saturn.Any proven Neximage settings anyone can
share? I was getting better results two months ago. My Neximage works
great on Jupiter but I'm having trouble with Saturn. Perhaps it's just
the bad seeing. I'm running a new Meade LX200 10" with my choice of a
2x 0r 3x barlow. My Meade DSI has been better for SAturn recently. It
seems that the final image has some distortion or banding, it's just
not very smooth. Any suggestions??

Howdy all.
I put together a mosaic of the 2 day old moon from 4/10/2005.
I used a 5" SCT. Each frame is approximately 100 images stacked.
It's a total of 8 images merged using iMerge software.
Feel free to check it out under "Dead Fish".

Clear skies!

I just recieved my NexImage. So far I havent been able to get any
pictures. I was wondering if any of you use the neximage with a dob?
I have a XT10 Classic. After fussing around for a while, I am able to
get Saturn or Jupiter in the FOV, but after 5 seconds its out of the
FOV. I understand this going to happen, but is there any way to
combat this(other than purchasing a tracking scope, which I plan on
doing in 5months). Also when I opened my NexImage I heard a rattling
in it and havent been able to figure out what it is. Another problem
was after I change the camera settings the software frooze and didnt
want to work. So I uninstalled Amcap and Registack, and reloaded them,
but when I opened them again they didnt work and all of my documnets
and some of the program files were missing. Well thanks in adavance,

Zach

I have a 14 1/2 " dob, I use a 2x 2" barlow. I get 8
to 9 second avis and get pretty good results, see my
web site below for images. I use 12 FPM with the 8 to
9 sec avis...I also had the same rattling in my
neximager..I took the tube off and unscrewed the
screws off the back, when I pulled it apart... out
fell a little ball of weld that must of beaded up and
fell inside, What is your operating system? Ive found
that anything under windows XP has problems.also if
the FPS is set tooo high it freezes, I set mine on 1
to 15 FPS. Hope Ive helped alittle !! im fixing to
post my first mosaic of the moon from last night.

Hi all...

I'm wondering, now that people have had a chance to play with the
Neximage for a while, is it a good way to get started in solar system
imaging? Should I take the plunge, or might I be better off starting
with a SAC-IV-II, a modified Toucam, or the Meade LPI? I am really
only interested in solar system imaging. My scope is a 7" f15 Mak-Cass
(2700mm focal length).

Could anyone point me to the formulae necessary to calculate
arcseconds/pixel, and other stuff I will need? Do you think I'll need
the reducer lens for the NexImage with that fl? One nice thing about
the SAC is the chip is 2x larger...

Thanks and clear skies,

Matt T

That's a GREAT shot, Terry - very nice. What equipment did you use for
this shot? And did you change any of the default settings for the
capture?

Thanks for sharing
