From: Philadelphia Behavior Therapy Association [pbta@...] Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2009 11:59 AM To: info@... Subject: REMINDER - PBTA & LaSalle present: Peter Doehring, PhD--Autism Spectrum Disorders--2/4/09
CE Credits: PBTA is approved by the American Psychological Association
to offer continuing education for psychologists. PBTA is also an authorized provider for Continuing Education credits for Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Social Workers licensed in the state of Pennsylvania. PBTA maintains
responsibility for the program. This program provides two (2) hours of CE credits.
Description of the Program:
Interest in ASD has grown tremendously over the past 15 years, fueled by questions regarding its increased prevalence, dramatic claims of success from controversial treatments, and a growing body of research
describing its course and possible causes. Nonetheless, there is an emerging consensus among researchers, and practitioners regarding recommended assessment and intervention practices. We discuss local and national efforts to set standards for evaluation and
evidence-based intervention, and examples of programs designed to build capacity and expertise.
By the end of this talk, participants will be able to:
1. Identify some of the challenges to the assessment of individuals with ASD
2. Describe assessment standards recommended by state and national review panels
3. Outline approaches to determining whether an intervention is evidence-based
4. Present examples of evidence-based interventions for ASD
5. Discuss barriers to building capacity in assessment and intervention for ASD
Dr. Peter Doehring is currently the director of regional programs at the Center for Autism
Research (CAR) at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he works to describe, implement, and research programs for training and intervention related to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). He is interested in how we might build capacity for evidence-based
assessment, education, and treatment in community-based settings that are accessible to a broad and diverse population. Dr. Doehring was originally trained in Canada as clinical-research psychologist, where he worked for 7 years to develop research and early
intervention programs for children with ASD at the local and regional level. From 1999 until 2008, he served as Statewide Director for the Delaware Autism Program (DAP), one of the largest public school programs specializing in ASD in the USA. DAP continues
to provide comprehensive educational and related services to more than 700 children 2-21 years of age across 35 community-based sites with the support of 400 staff.

I knew the second after I sent this, I should have clarified. I have a colleague who is outside of the Philadelphia area, but is at the Associate level so I just wanted to get more information for him, and thought the group could benefit from the answer to the question, so I "replied all."

In order to introduce his new MBSR programs to mental heath professionals in the Cherry Hill, NJ area Scott Rosen (president of Transformations) is offering the chance to complete the 8-week MBSR curriculum at no cost to a limited number of licensed professionals who practice in the NJ area. This is on a first come basis for 10 professionals - the only requirement for receipt of the scholarship is that you are a licensed mental health professional in NJ and currently working with clients.
If you have an interest in MBCT, the MBSR curriculum is identical to it with the exception that didactics about depression rather than stress are integrated into the curriculum.
If you ever want to teach mindfulness based interventions, it is highly recommended that you practice mindfulness meditation yourself - completing the MBSR class is a way to either strengthen your own personal practice or to begin learning about mindfulness meditation practice.
There are 2 MBSR classes offered in NJ and scholarships are offered for both - one meets Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. starting 9/27/08 and the other meets Tuesday nights from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. starting 10/7/08.
Both are taught by instructors who have completed the most advanced level of training offered for teaching MBSR at the Center for Mindfulness.
If interested, please contact Donna at through email at donnam@...
