It doesn't call for xinitrc, it calls for .xinitrc (notice the dot
before xinit). this file is found in your home directory. To see that it
is indeed there, do
	 ls -a
Dot files (files with a dot preceeding the file name) are hidden, and
are generally for application or program configuration.

The kernel itself is /boot/vmlinuz

linux from scratch will show you how to build a personal distro. You can leave out what you dont want. LFS - http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ -

You may also want to download and look at a floppy disk distro to see just the basics you need to run linux. - http://www.trinux.org -

here are some randoms I pulled of the net a while ago

 http://www.eudora.com/freeware/qpop.html - pop3 server (i think)
 http://www.gnome.org/ - Gnome
 http://www.kde.org/index.html - KDE
 http://www.gimp.org/ - Gimp
 http://www.kernelnotes.org/ - Kernel Notes
http://qmail.goof.com/top.html - mailserver other than sendmail (no hacks yet - if security - read)
 http://www.apache.org/ - Apache web server
http://www.apache-ssl.com/ - Apache secured with ssl
 http://www.ssh.fi/ - ssh deamon
http://www.xfree86.org/ - xfree86 windows for linux (not realy but...)
 http://www.usmatrix.net/postfix/start.html - just look
 http://www.wu-ftpd.org/ - wu-ftp deamon (ftp server)
 http://us4.samba.org/samba/samba.html - SAMBA
http://www.isc.org/ - Bind, dhcp,.... (you will probably need depending on what you are doing)
 http://www.balabit.hu/products/syslog-ng/ - Syslog deamon
 http://www.gnu.org/ - GNU
http://www.rpm.org/ - rpms and the rpm package
 http://www.kornshell.com/ - Korn Shell
 http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/linuxconf/ - linuxconf

Just for the reference read the docs befor installing. I dont know how much you do and dont use or your goals for this distro you are building see the sercurity mailing lists if security is what you are looking for.

Subject: USB Printing Problem (followup)
jgil@...

I am still looking for a solution to my USB printing problem under Red Hat 7,
kernel 2.2.16-22; Will
someone give it another shot?

I am using Red Hat 7.0 out of the box and can print to my Epson 900 installed on
/dev/usb/lp0 only
after typing, as root or su

'modprobe printer'.

Unless I do that nothing happens but after doing that the printer prints,

During booting I get the following message:

Starting lpd: Warning: - lp cannot open the device '/dev/usb/lp0' - No such
device.

Lp0 does exist according to ls -al /dev/usb/lp0.
It shows:
crw-rw--- root lp 180, 0 0 August 24 2000 (I think I copied that down
correctly.)

Will some one please try and help me get this going as I think it should?
That is without having to issue the modprobe printer command.

I modified my fstab and modules.conf according to the instructions in the Linux
USB FAQ document
from www.linux-usb.org. Typing 'mount' shows usbdevfs is mounted.

Here is the modules.conf

  alias scsi_hostadapter ncr53c8xx
  alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
  alias sound-slot-0 cs46xx
  alias usb-controller usb-uhci
  alias usb uhci
  post-install uhci modprobe printer
  post-install printer

And here is my fstab

This may seem half-assed way of getting it to work but what the hell.
Maybe have 'modprobe printer' run as root in booting. That may do the
trick, or not.

I had a similar problem after compiling 2.2.4 last week. My short term fix
was buying a parallel cable and sticking with 2.2.16-22 (RH7.0)

Hopefully my ramblings are of some help for you and are not just stupid
ramblings... hehehe

To start you may want to check and make sure all the software on your
system is upgraded accordingly to facilitate the new kernel. I think that
information was in the README for the new kernel.

All the recent postings on the 2.2.4 kernel reminded me of a question I

To compile modular sound, this would mean installing sound support, oss
support, and support for my sound card all as modules correct? If anyone
can prove me wrong or right, I'd appreciate it.

Nope, just download the new kernel and follow the instructions. It has a fair
amount of documentation with it, shouldnt be too many problems :)

Yep... or you could install sound support in the kernel and the rest as
modules, all as modules should be ok though (I think).

Subject: Problems installing JRE 1.3
chris.mooring@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I have a problem I can't seem to get around.

I want to set up a servlet/jsp test environment with tomcat/apache
and JRE 1.3.

I intalled a bare bones RH Linux 6.0 system with Apache and Samba and
then tried to install my java run-time environment rpm. When I tried
I got a dependancy error saying that I needed glibc7_2.1.2_11 (or
something like that). I tried installing glibc from my RH 7.0 disc
but was told that rpm could only work with major numbers <=3.
Therefore I tried to install the version of rpm from my RH 7.0 disc
and was also told that rpm could only work with major numbers <= 3.

Can I upgrade rpm easily ?

Because I installed a minimal and slightly older verion of RH, am I
likely to run into further dependency problems later on with tomcat
etc ?

Am I going about this the right way ?

Thanking you all in advance,
Chris

Kernel 2.4.3 is the latest stable one, you can
download it through this site www.kernel.org. Try to
read the procedure through on this site
www.linuxnewbie.org, it will help you a lot.

Hi All,
A related question,
1) In order to install ALSA sound, do I have to compile PnP into the
kernel. Is the PnP feature required only for ISA cards.
2) Does the Linux kernel support shared IRQs? Like my BIOS shares
IRQ5 between the SMBus and PCI Sound.
My PC has an i810, with PCI built in sound card. Someone suggested
that I disable the PnP feature for this to work. But no luck.

Any help forthcoming?

Is there any way to make my Voodoo2 works under Linux?

I know that Xwindows && Linux kernel supports Voodoo3,Voodoo5,Voodoo

But I only have Voodoo2 G111 by 3Dfx Interactive. (It is software
compatible to Voodoo Graphics && Voodoo Rush.)

If there is no way to use my Voodoo2 under Linux, tell me please,
which video card I must have to have no problems in Linux && have 3d
acceleration near to Voodoo by features.
Unfortunately I can't upgrade my Voodoo2 cause finance problems. So I
only can downgrade it. :(

I have 3Dfx Interactive Voodoo2 G111 with 12M RAM in couple with
S3 Virge DX with 4M RAM.

Thank You all.

I managed to get the Voodoo2 working, but I had to download the MESA source
code and compile it, making sure the voodoo2 options were selected. It wasn't
very easy, but it worked... Since I use mandrake I have to replace the rpm
versions on MESA with the compiled versions and there are various dependency
problems.

You will also find that the voodoo2 card will work with boxed versions of
quake II etc with the supplied minidriver.

I installed Red Hat 7 just two days ago, and now I'm here to learn
about it, if you help me. My Linux knowledge is at almost a zero
level, but I wish to learn it. Currently I'm using Win98SE.
My first problem is with the modem: how to install it? I have a
Conexant SoftK56 PCI modem, and the friend who helped me to install
the system didn't install any internal modems before. So he doesn't
know why did Linux answer continuously: "Modem is busy". Can you
discover what's the problem?

   Thanks in advance.

You likely have a Winmodem.

What a winmodem is, is a cheap modem that lacks a chip called the
Digital Signal Preprocessor (DSP). This is done by the manufacturer
to save a few pennies on each unit (x millions of units shipped =
big $$$ saved).

The function of the missing chips is emulated by *windoze* drivers,
making it possible for these hardware-deficient modems to work.
And of course, windoze drivers don't work on Linux. Additionally,
winmodems are often slower than conventional modems that have all
their hardware, because the function that is usually performed by
a dedicated chip has to be done by a CPU that is busy with a
hundred other things.

You would think that it would be a simple matter for some Linux
whiz to code up a driver for a winmodem, but the problem is that
many winmodem makers flatly refuse to release the necessary hardware
specs for writing these drivers.

We can only speculate about why, but the best bet running is that
winmodems *are* cheap modems cheaply made, and the manufacturers
are ashamed to release specs that prove how crappy their junk is.

Now in recent months, Linux developers have managed to write
drivers for a *few* winmodems, you can go look on linmodems.org
to see if there is anything for you.

BUT, you are far, far better off junking that winmodem trash and
getting a REAL Hayes-compatible modem that has all of it's chips
and will run on any OS (Win, Linux, DOS, BeOS, ??). It's better
quality, will last a lot longer than the winmodem, and as a
benefit, your connections will be faster and stabler in windoze
as well.

Sounds like you need to setup a Virtualhost in Apache for the website, for
the name your using. In the .conf is a good example you could follow, its
alllll the way at the bottom.
