Subject: Engaging Communities on Climate Change Course (London) 1st Dec
talkaction35
Send Email Send Email

An invaluable course for anyone looking to develop community activities for
energy-saving, climate change and related issues.

Date: Thursday 1st December, 2011
Time: 10:00-16:00
Location: TCPA, 17 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AS

Comments from participants of previous Talk Action courses run by this
facilitator:

"Really useful clarity on communicating climate change. Excellent!" Rona Gold
(West Lothian Council)

"Extremely good day, thank you!" Kate Hogarth (Scottish Environment Protection
Agency- Sepa)

"Enjoyed it all - great job" Kathleen Kirkness (Changeworks)

The Course:
Organisations and individuals need to take energy and climate change issues into
account when planning their work. Delivering climate goals will require the
engagement of a wide range of stakeholders, including community organisations.

This course will teach you the skills and information needed to develop
long-term engagement of civil society organisations, groups and individuals in
work on climate change and low-carbon living.

The new Localism Bill stresses the need for better community engagement: the
question is how to make that engagement happen on this complex issue. While some
groups are active on limiting and adapting to climate change, this poses unique
challenges to the majority who may have other interests and priorities.

This course outlines why climate change can be a particularly problematic issue
for communities, how to overcome this and how this links to issues around the
new Localism Bill and the `Big Society'.

People attending this course will:
• Learn the ways in which community engagement can deliver lasting change on
climate and energy issues and how to make this happen.
• Understand why community engagement on climate change can be problematic.
• Be clear on the best ways to start a dialogue around climate change.
• Learn to lead a discussion on the positive aspects of low carbon living.
• Learn to support and work with communities.
• Be able to offer guidance to any community group on reducing their own foot
print.
• Receive guidance on how to develop an action plan.

Who should attend this course:

The course will benefit anyone working with or seeking to work with community
organisations on behaviour change, projects or local action planning. It will
include a review of the new moves towards localism and how these impact on
climate and sustainability work.

It is designed for climate and energy staff, community workers, organisers and
activists. It covers approaches to work with both enthusiastic and less engaged
communities. All participants will have time to work on developing their own
actions plans for work after the course.

A course manual will be available to all participants, along with a copy of
`Better Places, Better Planet', a book written by Chris Church for the Community
Development Foundation.

The Facilitator:

The course is run by Chris Church who has over 20 years experience of work with
communities on climate and sustainability issues. As an experienced trainer, his
courses for Talk Action are popular and have run regularly for three years.
Chris has written manuals on local action for BTCV, Groundwork and the Community
Development Foundation. He is Chair of the UK Low Carbon Communities Network.

Chris has also worked with the Community Sector Coalition, many local Councils,
the Environment Agency, the National Trust, BTCV, Defra, Groundwork, the
European Union TACIS programme, Surfers Against Sewage and numerous community
organisations. He is trained as a teacher and has been developing and running
training programmes for 22 years.

Dear James,

In Wise County Virginia, a mountain known as Ison Rock Ridge is slated to be
destroyed by a 1,200 acre mountaintop removal coal mine. Ison Rock Ridge sits
above five small communities made up of 1,800 people. If the permit is approved,
the quality of life for these people would effectively be destroyed as well.

The proposed mountaintop removal permit boundary calls for mining 300 feet from
some community members’ homes as well as the burying of headwater streams that
feed the creeks running through their communities.

Your efforts have held this permit at bay for years but now the EPA is close to
making a final decision, and the state is siding with the coal companies. We
need to make our voices heard louder than ever by showing up at their doorsteps
and demanding justice.

On November 16th, we will gather in DC in front of the EPA headquarters
alongside community members from Wise County to ask the EPA to Keep Ison Rock
Ridge Standing.

I Love Mountains is teaming up with the Wise Energy for Virginia Coalition and
others to bring hundreds of people to the doorstep of the U.S. EPA. The EPA’s
authority is all that stands in the way of blasting on Ison Rock Ridge but the
agency has indicated that it is considering allowing the permit to move forward!

No matter where you are from, please join us in DC for Virginia Rising: the
rally to keep Ison Rock Ridge Standing!

Subject: The arguments for and against solar trackers
redlerm

Hi everyone.

I've been presented an argument against solar trackers, claiming that the cost
effectiveness is directly linked to the price of PV. In other words, if one
gains 25% energy output from tracking and the price of PV drops to the point
where PV customers choose instead to buy the equivalent 25% PV in additional
fixed position panels, the market for trackers will go away.

In response, I've argued that the cost of land and power density may play a
bigger role than a simple cost comparison which focuses on a single commodity
like PV. I also argued that emerging technologies like concentrated solar PV and
solar thermal depend on trackers and is showing an increasing demand. Finally,
one can argue that all maturing technologies will exhibit a drop in price due to
enhanced supply chains and developments in manufacturing processes. Trackers are
not exempt from that phenomenon.

Would you say I'm on the right path, or are there additional arguments to be
made in favor of tracking. Any references would be appreciated.

Mike, Years ago solar trackers were expensive and so where solar module's
watt prices. Two things have happened since then. The cost of solar PV and
the balance of equipment's prices has come down. So the argument against
anything solar PV is no argument anymore. Here is a real fact you should
always consider. If you can produce more electric power for less; than what's
the problem. No argument! Remember it is better to get what you want and be
happy. Solar trackers work, and also fixed stands. The real cost difference
is how many more hours your system can produce more power per day. Simple!
There is one simple disadvantage of a solar tracking system. Don't install
them on roofs of homes or buildings.

And then there are the omnidirectional PV devices now being developed.
No tracker necessary.

Fair enough. However, there are those who would say that although you
can get 25% more power out of an array with tracking (at my current
latitude), you can calculate how many fixed panels represents the same
25% and simply add them to your existing system. Very often, it's the
tracker companies that lose in such comparisons.

I'm not against trackers. In fact, I've been developing them for about
twelve years. I'm just presenting an argument as the devil's advocate so
that I can become more informed of the different points of view and be
better prepared to defend my position.

Barry Savage wrote: "And then there are the omnidirectional PV devices

There is one variable that omnidirectional PV cannot overcome, and that
is the area of exposure. You can only use omnidirectional PV devices to
redirect the light to which the panels are exposed. That value can be
estimated using an ordinary trigonometric equation.

I*Y*X*sin(a)

Where:

"I" is the solar irradiance available in Watts per square meter
"X" is the width of the panel
"Y" is the length of the panel
"a" is the apparent angle of the sun from the horizon.

At dawn and dusk the potential power converted is almost zero
At noon, the potential power equals the panel length (Y) times width (X)
times the irradiance (I).

...which makes the name "omnidirectional" a little misleading since it
can't actually redirect light from all directions.

Trackers on the other hand, can maintain 100% exposure throughout the
diurnal cycle of the sun in which it appears above the horizon.
