I have a copy of SoundDiver for Mac PPC still in the shrink wrap. Got
it from an estate sale. I'm keeping it as a museum piece along with my
unopened boxes of IBM OS/2.

predicament of recovering this file.... is that possible? it was saved in bank 2
preset 63.... please help. I have a checkpoint of the patch saved in bank 2
preset 62 and sound 1 is identical to the sound 1 in the patch i lost... however

Subject: JD-990 adaptation question

Hello, hopefully someone is still about who can assist me with a question
regarding the Roland JD-990.

The adaptation shows default names for Preset Patch Bank 'A' & 'B', likewise the
default names for Performances Bank 'A' & 'B'.

These cannot be 'requested', presumably because they are ROM banks and editing
is not allowed. What I would like to do however is click on one of those preset
patch or performance names and have the JD-990 switch to that
preset/performance, just like you're able to do with internal presets and
performances.

I have a feeling this must be possible with the JD-990 adaptation but I don't
know how to do it, does it have to do with the 'Special Parameters' settings? If
it is possible, could someone please instruct me on what I need to do to get it
going, I've spent hours trying to get this to work without success without any
joy thus far. Any help is appreciated.

My JD-990 is running OS 1.0.5. Thank you.

Don't know the actual adaption, but the situation you describe seems to be true
for other ROM-based instruments I am familiar with.
I don't actually understand why you feel driven to want this.
If you want a remote control action from the SoundDiver to the instrument, I
never explored that enough to be any help.
I too would like to hear if there's a way in here.

I usually turn off the direct transmission function while I have the pc
connected to avoid robots taking over while I'm busy.
Hate that.

I was trying to compile a "best of" the internal presets like I used to on
analog and digital synths, but got in a very muddled area, managing to make the
whole interconnected mess freeze up.
The Kurzweil 2000 and 2500 and Triton Rack both don't like you messing around
with their minds that way.
So many presets and SoundDiver seemed an ideal method, but....

My particular solution was to do all the Librarian type shuffling of stuff
within the ROM-based ( and Sample-based as it turned out).
Then once that was done and checked and saved to zip, HD, whatever, I can save
it to the Computer for printing, cut and pasting that kind of thing.

Good luck with other more knowledgable members.
My take is; SoundDiver like Galaxy before it, was essentially a product of the
synth era.
Before samplers arrived. Way before ROM had sounds for us.
It got a few tweaks, but it's still a synth librarian really. With  a trailer
on the back.

Thanks for replying. The last couple of years I have been obtaining a lot of
legacy hardware and restoring it. For all but a couple of pieces SoundDiver
supports it and, in most cases, does the job very well.

I wanted to change patches within the JD ROM entries without needing to touch
the h/w itself. This can be done with my other kit but not the JD-990. I spent
more time on this last night and it appears to be a limitation in the JD-990
rather than the adaptation as the Utility dump options also only access the
memory patches. However, it's not a deal breaker as the librarian part of
SoundDiver let's me do this patch switching and auditioning using the temp edit
buffers.

It was more of general question and wanting a definitive answer, as it stands I
still don't know how to use the 'Special Parameters' section in the JD-990
adaptation where the program change and multi channel settings can be defined.

In time I hope to start tweaking/making my own adaptations but I'm about a
decade behind here and trying to play catch up :) Thanks again for chiming in,
much appreciated.

Here is some more information concerning use of this file. Thanks to Ronb for
providing it!

Hi, this is a modified SoundDiver XV module for PC users that make program
changing/auditioning practically instantanous.
Like previously mentioned in this thread :
http://tech.dir.groups.yahoo.com/group/sounddiver-users/message/8840 simple
"auditioning" was quite frustrating.

The patch removes the millisecond wait state between each midi message (which
was 96 milliseconds). Given the amount of
midi messages sent this added significant overhead between clicking a preset in
SoundDiver and actually being able to
audition/edit that sound.

Given computers have improved performance, USB advances, MIDI interface
improvements etc.. in the last decade and providing
you have upgraded your XV to the lastest firmware you shouldn't encounter any
errors using this modified module.

That being said, backup your existing XV.dll

I have tested this with my fully expanded XV-5080 and XV-3080 without problems
using a MOTU MIDI Express and MIDI Express XT
USB interface. That being said, use at your OWN risk, I accept no responsibility
for loss of data as a result of you using this
modified module.

Enjoy much quicker response times with your Roland XV series modules.

Hi, just a small correction on my part, I meant to say 150 milliseconds wait
time between each sysex message (0x96 hex). As you can imagine, 1000
milliseconds is 1 second so for every sysex chunk sent 150 milliseconds mounts
quite quickly into many seconds of wait time.

If people are interested in a MAC patch let me know and I'll attempt to help
out.

cheers
Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for providing this. I tried your version today but unfortunately it isn't
playing well with my system (SD 3.0.5 on XP 32 (SP3), with an XV-5080 at v1.30).

When selecting the XV from the set-up screen, I can play the sound that is
currently loaded in the XV, but when I cursor up or down in either the main SD
window or an SD library to select / audition new sounds(not double clicking
though), first of all the XV doesn't respond, then sound can no longer be heard
from the XV (doesn't respond to midi), and then SD locks-up, requiring a system
reboot.

The original version is stable and works on my system, albeit with the painfully
long loading time.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

thats no good then is it? :) I haven't tried the cursor up/down method you
described as I always double clicked so I will try that also. But I suspect it's
probably h/w differences of some sort, what MIDI interfaces are you using?
Latest drivers installed? I think I will create a patcher for the XV.dll that
will allow the user to set their own millisecond wait period so they can adjust
it till it works for their setup as this will probably be more bulletproof for
variances in setups.

I'll try and get this done today. Thanks for the feedback.

a little OT. Would you be able to build an adaptation for Oberheim MC
3000/2000 master keyboard? and how much would it cost, if in case?

Hi Chris,

I've created a small patching utility that will allow people to specify their
own wait time, with some experimentation you should be able get a working value
that is stable for your own setup. A readme.usage.txt file is included. I've
emailed the package to the group adminstrator.

best regards
Rob

Any ideas?

Regards,
Chris.

Here is the accompanying text message. Once again, thanks to Rob for providing
this:

SoundDiver XV Module Patcher 1.0
================================

Contents:

SDXVModulePatcher.exe
xv.dat

(xv.dat is the original untouched module and is used as a tempate for
the patching process, it MUST be present for the patcher to work)

Description:

A patcher that allows the user to custom set the SYSEX transmit wait time
for the SoundDiver Roland (tm) XV module (xv.dll).

Usage:

1) Run SDXVModulePatcher.exe
2) Specify your transmit wait time (value 0 - 150)
3) Click 'Patch', this will create a 'xv.dll' file in the same location as the
patcher
4) Copy the xv.dll from the patcher location directory into your
'SoundDiver\Drivers' directory
5) Start SoundDiver and see if it works

TroubleShooting:

Start with higher values and work your way down, keep reducing the value while
checking for trouble-free operation. In this way you can find a value that works
well with your own setup.

I'm sorry but I can't help you with that. I've only recently started using
SoundDiver and haven't got into the adaptation creation part of it yet. I also
don't have any Oberheim gear so I'd imagine it would be diffcult to make an
adaptation without the specific synth.

SoundDiver is excellent program, I'd love to see a revival in interest for it
cause while it's over 10 years old now its still stable and works well. There
must be several people who have created custom adaptations, it would definitely
be cool to see some more become available.

Good luck with your search, perhaps someone else can help you out.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for this. I'll give it a try later in the week and let you know how I get
on (little busy at work at the moment. Re. the Midi interface question, I'm
using Steinberg Midex 8's with the latest driver.
